Sheesh, my last bit of mail about Max hasn't even left my system to fly onto Ecto yet, and here's another already. :) I got an advance tape of the album "A Million Year Girl" today, and I'm listening to it now; I'll wait until I've heard it properly before doing a report on it, but from what I've heard so far (basically side one of the tape) it's pretty commercial stuff, though with a few twists. The reason for "Is It OK?" and "Hunting Ground" being removed from the CD-EP becomes suddenly clear, by the way, when you look at the track listing for the album: Be Firm Coma Purple Flower Lay Down (Candles In The Rain) Is It Okay (If I Call You Mine) A Toast To... Jezu's Jewellery Hunting Ground Can I Catch Fire Alice Learning To Let Go Raining Angels Orchestra Au Naturel Obviously someone thought that having three EP tracks on the album might be a bit embarrasing, so they took two of them off the EP. The mixes are identical, I think (checks Hunting Ground... hmm, seems the same apart from the sound effect at the beginning... it's remixed, but not drastically). The "much more twisted" mix of "Coma" Max was talking about doing ain't on this album. :) The new single, "Be Firm" has only one other track on it, a non-album track called "Out In The Cold". No writing or production details on the album - none are listed on the advance cassette - but as far as I am aware Daniel Denholm produced the album (he produced "Ordinary Angels" and the rest of the "Clunk" EP for Frente!). Denholm co-wrote both tracks on the new single. If the cover art is one of the process shots I sneaked a peek over Max's shoulder at before the Continental gig, then the cover's going to be pretty special... :) The album's out May 15th. Apologies to Ectopeople outside Australia/NZ, to whom none of the above is likely to be of the slightest bit of interest. :) - - Anthony - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au Physical mail: P.O. It's not a cover - Max wrote it, though the lyrics don't appear on the CD cover. After speculating for ages on the reason why, I asked her and she said simply there wasn't enough space, and the lyrics were the easiest to understand without having to read them. > 5. Crash Landing! > > "You chew me up, I'm spat out" This song uses overdubs and yes, a string > quartet, to maximum effect. Brilliant, isn't it? It's like a mini-opera in four and a half minutes. > A fitting finish to the single. It left me thinking "When is her album > coming out?" In May, actually. :) May 15th, to be precise. The album's called "A Million Year Girl", which I am pleased about - I suggested when I interviewed her that she should have kept the "Million Year Girl" sub-title for the album title, and she said "do you think so?" and filed it away for consideration. Though I'm sure it wasn't just my doing. :) Max's new single's out in Australia now - it's called "Be Firm" and is, unfortunately, a very commercial pop song quite atypical of what I've heard of her music so far. In a live environment she's quite remarkable. > The cover is a not-so-subtle nod to Margot Smith's first album, and the Yep, I had a laugh about that - for those who haven't seen it, it shows Max quite literally sleeping with a lion. Margot was amused, too. Max says the photo was taken before Margot's album came out. > interior photo is... um, well, *interesting* :) That one did the rounds of the street press for a couple of years when she was trying to get a record deal; if you find that interesting, spare a thought for the interviewer from Sydney who turned up at the appointed time and found himself interviewing a totally naked Max, who never made any comment about the fact that she'd forgotten to put clothes on... Me, I just ended up being rowed up the Yarra River by Max, tape recorder in hand. :) > If you can get hold of this single, I thoroughly recommend it. I had the privilege of being able to go backstage after the show, with Wendy Rule, whose recordings I'm working on at the moment. She made a beeline for Hugh, who we'd be going "Gah!" about for the entire gig, grabbed his hand, shook it vigrously, and said "Yourplayingwasfantasticthankyousomuch" to which Hugh graciously replied "thank you" (I figure he gets this a lot :). As he turned away, Wendy muttered under her breath "And play on my album!" Unfortunately, he didn't hear. :) The entire band are lovely people, by the way, and as for Loreena, she's one of the most toerant, patient artists I've ever seen. She had time for everyone, kept smiling despite being obviously tired, and endured a gold record presentation and a very corporate speech with enthusiasm. > The blending of Brian Hughes' guitar and Marsh's violin (musically, > not literally :) was a wonder to behold! I did think that the electric guitar solos were out of place, the same thing that bugged me last year at the "showcase" gig. With all that lovely organic instrumentation on stage, the electric guitar solos sounded like an intrusion. Far too "Genesis". :) Great concert, though. It reminds me of something the bandmembers of Toad the Wet Sprocket have said when asked why they do songs that mention abuse/rape of women. And why they support such causes as Take Back the Night. I guess some people think it odd that an all-male band would be so into those issues. And they said it's because they know more women who have been abused than women who haven't. And sadly, I think most people have that experience. It takes a lot to change it. Changes in thinking, in education, in society itself. Speak up or slink out? Or some further alternative I haven't thought of? Like sending a letter and signing it "a concerned fan who is too pathetic to confront you face to face."< Pathetic.... nah.... it's a common emotion among fans of bands like Yes and Marillion, who are used to great fluctuations in quality. I'm not familiar at all with BETTY, but all too familiar with the feeling of disenchantment when a band you enjoy changes direction and is no longer interesting - or worse - when you feel the band is "selling out" (or they just plain suck). We music fans need to remind ourselves that even good bands have slumps, bad gigs, etc. Perhaps a well phrased question (to aforementioned band member) as to the "new direction" of the band, put in such a way that is non-threatening - could reveal tension within the band, personal crises of the writers, or none of the above - they were bitten by the bug of mediocrity. Either way, you can always make the mental note to not buy the new album and hope they do better with the subsequent releases. You know.... the new material may just grow on you too..... and it may change a bit during creation of a new album - so be optomistic. My standard response to that whole issue is, don't buy it, don't go to the shows, find another band to get into for the time being. One thing this world doesn't need is one more cranky arm-chair (or otherwise) rock critics. Sorry dude, didn't mean to sound harsh..... I guess the best thing to say in that situation is... nothing. When I went to see a band called "she" in Chicago, I was hanging out with them before the show. Afterwards I went over to the lead singer and told her that they really had to work on tuning (i.e. pitch). She got into a real huff about this, saying it's hard to hear and blah blah blah and she seemed pretty pissed that I was saying this, but I'll bet they go back and try to work on that and that will make them better the next time. When I saw the Bobs, I was disappointed with their song selection and the excessive amount of banter between songs, which I thought they were using to get out of singing more songs. Towards the end of the show when people were shouting largely ignored requests, I yelled "sing something good!" This really shocked them and everyone in the audience laughed. But hey, being critical is part of being a good fan. I think people should let artists know how they feel. Conversely, when I really like what an artist does, I try to go up to them afterwards and tell them. The first time I saw VW I yelled out song suggestions and actually got into a mini-conversation with her while she was on stage (I yelled out All Along the Watchtower after she played a song that sounded alot like it and she paused for a moment and said "yeah that has the same chord patterns." -- it is so cool to see her think on stage). Etc, etc. As a performer myself, I crave feedback from the audience -- what they liked and didn't like -- which songs worked, which didn't -- was the sound good, etc. It is invaluable info if 5 different people said the female vocals were too loud -- that means we need to adjust for that next time. - -mjm ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V2 #78 ************************* ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to ecto-owner@nsmx.rutgers.edu
