I took a look at the Ecto room and it's neat, if a little sparse at the moment. I left a message with the receptionist - did you get it? Ford's _How Much for Just the Planet?_ is one of the best Trek books, certainly the funniest. Heck, people who don't like Star Trek love the book as well as those who enjoy Trek. It's a Gilbert&Sullivanesque musical. And, if you look closely, you'll see Pamela Dean, David Dyer Bennett, Neil Gaiman, Diane Duane, Peter Morwood, and Janet Kagan in recurring roles in the novel. Well, what meth said and then some. Also, Ford's other Star Trek novel is a must if you are at all fascinated by Klingons. It's called _The Final Reflection_ and is the definitive work about Klingons, IMHO. Very little is seen of the Enterprise crew, but you don't miss them at all. :) They're great books that happen to have Star Trek characters in them, and they're the kind of thing that wouldn't get published today. The series you mentioned is the Guardians of the Flame series. I'm told it's rather light, but still a fun read if you like that sortof thing. Joel is certainly capable of rubbing folks the wrong way. But he can be a charmer as well. I usually see him playing with his kids and hanging out with friends. Or arguing with Steve Brust. Jane was in Minneapolis to do a reading and a discussion about banned books last year. My mom (quite the conservative) went to the reading because she was a fan of Jane's and had heard me talk about her a lot. She'd also read _Briar Rose_ and loved it. I kindof forgot about this fact until Christmas rolled around. One of the gifts from my mom was _The Devil's Arithmetic_, which she had Jane sign for me at that reading. Pretty cool, I must say. Haven't read these and don't recall hearing much about them before. Worth a looksee, mayhaps. Tho I shy away from big series, usually. Even if everyone I know urges me to read them. (like, people keep bugging me to read Tad Williams' series. And I like what I've heard and what little I've read. But they're huge books and look like straight fantasy. I'm not sure what my problem is. As I always complain that good books are too short! ;-) ) Ohyeah. I sent a whole message devoted to Terri Windling's latest anthology, _The Armless Maiden_... I finished it this weekend. It is very, very good. And an important work, I think, as well. 'Lo all, First thing I have to say is a mandatory "Thank you!" and "Good job!" to Jason for setting up the MUSH. It's very nice. Now all we have to do is arrange a time to have a collective "room warming" party. I'd like to see some old faces at the ecto "clubhouse". Super cool job, Jason! Secondly, I went to see Tank Girl earlier this week. There is a huge buzz amongst comic book readers about this movie. It's the typical and expected "The movie strayed from the book." deal. I have respect for the purists in my comic collecting community, but sometimes you just got to hang back and chill out. True, I haven't read the original series. Therefore I am in a sweet position. I can judge the movie on its own merits. I liked it a lot. I walked out of the theater with a smile on my face and when I tried to pin down what put it there, I came up blank. I love movies like those! Lori Petty was great as Tank Girl. Naomi Watts played a fantastic Jet Girl (I am now desperately in love with Jet Girl. ;) Ice-T was great in his part as well. And Malcolm McDowell? What can I say? He plays a great villian. This movie was quirky and funny and unlike some of my friends, I liked the animated sequences spliced into the film. Good job all around....I also read the comic book adaptation of the movie and I can clue thos who have seen the film in on some edited stuff. If you don't want to see it, I'm giving you ample room to turn away. There isn't anything else to say......Oh, wait a minute...the soundtrack. Great songs people. Stuff by Belly, Veruca Salt, Portishead, Hole, Bjork, and a Cole Porter tune "Let's Do It" performed by Paul Westerberg and Joan Jett (i love this song!) To all who don't wanna stick around, Chad Ok, you're still with me... Stuff that's in the script (filmed?), but not in the final product... The story starts off at the time that the comet struck the Earth and destroyed (covered?) all of the water. We see young Rebecca (TG) and her parents wandering through a townwith her parents. SHe eventually gets separated from them and the comet hits. Rebecca survives, but she never sees her parents again. Cut to where the movie brings you in.... Cut to where the movie ends... Water and Power lays in ruin, the good guys have won the day. The ground starts to shake and as everybody wonders what the hell is going on, Sub Girl breaks through the ground. Sub Girl for those who are wondering is the rather excentric red headed lady that had Sam's wood carvings, the girl who talked about "The rains are coming." She's been underneath the Blue Dunes (Keslee (bad guy) talked about all the water that was underneath there.). As she arrives and is filled in, the rain starts to pour. There is even a picture of TG and Booga standing in the rain in the inner sleeve of the TG soundtrack. There was also a Young Rebecca a Mother, and a Father listed in the credits. The film was shot, but must've been caught. That's the most info I've delivered in a long time. Can you tell, I'm bored.....C ya later. Chad Lundgren--------->lundgren_c@music.lib.matc.edu 2211 N. Last weekend I saw another fine disappear fear show, though I'd still rather see a duo with Cindy than a band without her. Openers were a Virginia band called Radar Rose. I'd never heard of them before, but they were quite good. A fourpiece band, with a female lead singer/ guitarist, a male grizzly adams lookalike on bass, and a female backup singer/percussionist/flautist. It was great fun to see a band use flute as often (and as well) as these guys did. They played a bluesy rock and roll, with some hints of Melissa Etheridge, as well as folkier artists and Tori. An interesting mix, and someone I'd look out for in the future. The next night I took my parents to see Noa. This was based on all the great reviews I'd read here (and overlooks the fact that I have the US released Noa tape and don't find it particularly interesting). Well, I'm happy to report that everything I'd read here was true. I find the tape to be too smooth, with a mellow jazz backing (akin to Sade, but less interesting), but the live shows were nothing like that. As has been frequently reported, it's just Noa singing and playing an amazing mix of percussion instruments fantastically, and Gil Dor on guitar. This show had the bonus of another incredible Israeli percussionist joining them. I think all the inventive percussion and guitar work in the live show is mostly absent from the album. Plus, Noa was a very visual performer, which, along with the more aggressive arrangements, made many of the songs I didn't find interesting on tape come alive in concert. Probably the most surprising song was her love song to her underware (hmmmm, I guess that's underwear, not like hardware), hanging out to dry on the clothsline and a constant reminder of the love she had been having or dreaming about. I had to supress a giggle with a chorus that went something like drip drip drippity drip, those remnants of love, while stealing glances over to see how my parents were reacting. There were 3 discs for sale in the lobby.... the American self-titled disc and her 2 Israeli discs. Unfortunately, they were $20, and since tix were already $30, I didn't feel much like buying any. I don't think I made this point too clearly, (guess I just don't tend to gush enough), but I thought this show was fantastic. I'm still not a big fan of the album, but I would definitely see her live again. My parents loved her too. AND THEN, the next night I saw 10K Maniacs, with too many opening bands. Sharon somebody and Monsoon, an ok folky female trio from Charlottesville (As a real far aside, I noticed in a DC store recently a Monsoon greatest hits disc. This would be Monsoon featuring SHeila Chandra. I'm not too familiar with their stuff, but this seemed to be a compilation of lots of their old stuff. The only song I know, from on e of Vickie's tapes, is "Third Eye and Tika TV", and that's on it. There are also a few re-mixes at the end, that might be new. I didn't buy it, so I can't say what's in the booklet.) But anyway, 2nd openers were someone called Hitchiker, which was Robert Buck on guitar and a guy with really bad stage presence, but not too bad a singer really. Reminded me a bit of Red House Painters. I just couldn't bear to watch him. The Maniacs show was good, but I was a bit disappointed. This was the same club I saw the Maniacs in for In My Tribe, and that show blew me away. Since then, I've had great (and mediocre) Maniacs experiences. I've also had wonderful John and Mary experiences. This was a fine show, it just didn't rank up there with some of those others. I think the biggest problem was the sound. They played a big auditorium show, and it completely overpowered the club. At one point Mary said it must be confusing for us, what with all these new songs and the sound bouncing wildly off the walls. (A local review said that the Maniacs as a band still had the same problem they always have, which is that everyone is always playing at once, so that things are too busy. I never noticed that before, but that seems like part of what my complaint was in this show.) That aside, the crowd was very receptive to Mary. Her violin (or is it viola? I forget) playing was great, and a wonderful addition to the band. She handled the few old Maniacs songs beautifully (Can't Ignore the Train, Candy Everyone Wants [ok, not really old], What's the Matter Here, and a few others). The set seemed to be really lacking in J&M songs, which is a pity. I was really excited when they started on "Fly me to the Moon", but it quickly segued into something else. The bulk of the show was new songs that the band had been working on. They sounded quite promising, despite the muddy presentation. All in all it was a good show, but not the revelation I was hoping for. (Also, the lights were really annoying, flashing all around and in our eyes regularly. They had lamps to give it a homey look, just like Victoria Williams had, but then they used a barage of colored lights like an auditorium show, and not very imaginatively, which pretty much counter- acted whatever cozy effect the lamps provided.) Oh, it looks like they will be going into the studio to record a new album later this year, though I'm not sure they actually have a label.
