This has been a major goddess concert week. Yes, it was quite a week for me too - I heard Sarah on Monday (Buffalo) and Victoria on Wednesday (Toronto). The two shows were at opposite ends of the spectrum - Sarah's very tight and professional, including a new, high-tech light show, Victoria's much more intimate and spontaneous, lighting provided by old living room lamps. Both were great but, if I had to pick the one I enjoyed the most it would be Victoria's. You've been told this often enough - if you have the chance to hear her on this tour DO IT! >*WOW*WOW*WOW* What an amazing show! I wanna become a Victoria groupie >and like a Deadhead, follow her from city to city. Each show is >different ("Loose"!) and you never know what she's going to sing... >originals or covers. Every city is treated to something special. OK, I'll provide the school bus. I know the feeling - It's very rare these days to attend something so unplanned, unchoreographed. Victoria and band created an atmosphere of pure magic on the night I heard them. Highlights for me were "Summer of Drugs" with verses of "Dear Prudence" grafted on to the end, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", an incredible "TC", ... Victoria's on the cover of last week's NOW magazine (a Toronto entertainment newspaper). The interview/writeup inside mentions that the Austin show was recorded and may be released. Also, Victoria recorded an album of standards prior to _Loose_, intended to get listeners used to her voice. It's unlikely now that it will be released. That's unfortunate, she does beautiful renditions of standards. Petitions anyone???? >Nick said that Victoria played Toronto Wednesday night, and that Jane >was in the audience. I didn't see Jane (we opted for seats in the loft, so couldn't see all of the main floor), but I did see Rebecca Jenkins and Mary Margaret O'Hara there. Quite a concentration of goddesses! >(shoo...rush out and search for >"Miss America" by Mary Margaret if you don't have it) MMOH fans should also pick up _Puerto Angel_ by The Henrys on the Trainrec label. She sings on several tracks, it also includes a new MMOH song, "Dark Dear Heart". It may be hard to find (try the usual Toronto mail order sources) but it's well worth seeking out. My friends and I are starting up a band. It's called Housequake, and we'll mostly cover Prince songs. Strange eh? Anyway, we are looking for songbooks, cause we are too damn lazy to sit and figure out the songs for ourselves. If anyone has any Prince sheet music they want to get rid of, or photocopy for me, I would be in great debt to you... I finally bought another bass. I just came back from seeing this movie for a second time. Everyone should run out and see it. It's an Australian film written and directed by P.J. Hogan, the husband of Jocelyn Moorhouse. Jocelyn is the director of the equally-fabulous _Proof_, and she produced _Muriel_. _Muriel_ manages to perfectly mix humor and drama, while never becoming silly or melodramatic. Toni Collette is amazing as Muriel. Just watching her sing along to an ABBA song while staring in a mirror is mesmerizing. And, as embarrassed as I am to admit this, I really liked the ABBA songs. They really work in the context of the film. Speaking of Australian films, I also saw _The Sum of Us_ this weekend. As much as I loved _Muriel's Wedding_, I hated this film. It was predictable, had horrible dialogue, and committed the mortal sin of having actors directly address the camera. Plus, Russell Crowe looked like Joey Lawrence in it. Irvin wondered: > look for her new album that is suppose to hit the stores end of the year, as > well as a compilation of songs that include her and suzanne vega (can anyone > tell more about this? i heard it mentioned on the s.vega list and no one has > told me more about it...something to do with a frnech collaboration?) I can't remember the name of the album, but it's another Hector Zazou project. Hector is a French musician who I know absolutely nothing about other than he doesn't sing and collaborates with very cool musicians. His last CD, _Sahara Blue_, included guest appearances by Dead Can Dance and Bel Canto goddess Anneli Drecker. The Anneli song, "I'll Strangle You," is utterly amazing, as long as you ignore the mumblings of Gerard Depardieu. Anyway, Suzanne Vega and Jane Siberry are both slated to be a part of Hector's latest project. Yes, we had the same problem with our band. We often had to play two sets a 45 minutes, each. In our rehearsal room we selected the songs, maybe 8 for each set, but live we finished the sets after 35 minutes and had to add a few songs or play something twice. However, I felt attracted by your lines...): I'd like to add another question: isn't it possible that things go right the opposite way? I mean, you're listening to someone's voice, and you are really catched by it, either after a certain number of listenings or just immediately in the moment the persons starts to sing. Maybe you know this feeling, when a voice causes you to get the shivers and you can't help listening to it with all your senses... (silly, I know, but sometimes I cannot prevent me from starring at the artist - ok, stop here ;) I shouldn't wonder if such feelings for the voice (or music) could be the source of falling in love with the singer. Yeah, I am too crazy, aren't I? No, you're not. I would never have fallen in love with Tori if she was singing like Daisy Duck. The first things that I recognize before I decide to fall in love with a woman are: good looks, nice voice and nice smell.
