Walking this line backwards I can now write about it on ecto again. Currently only issue 1 is out of print and will only be reprinted if funds permit, which they don't at present. Both Sharon and Happy object to posting the contents on ecto, a wish I will follow, and hopefully everyone else. They feel that if the fanzine is reprinted on Ecto, it will loose subscriptions. The notion is that if the ectophiles can read it for free, even a year later, many won't subscribe. Despite Rhodeways being an excellent source of information (yes, even for ectophiles!) the number of subscribers still isn't sufficient to cover the production cost. With issue 4 coming out soon, the first subscriptions will be running out. So if this should apply to you, don't forget to renew your subscription! Happy agrees with Sharon 100% and supports her decision. Let me close with a quote from Happy: "if the fanzine goes out of business, it will hurt my career" ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." Ted Sturgeon's short stories were among my first exposures to SF and I read whatever I could get during my school years. Almost all of it were translations into German, but the magic of his stories and words somehow survived. The last years I have been pretty unsuccessful in finding original works, but now I'm thrilled that all of his stories are being published in a 10 volume collection. Some of them unpublished, many never before available locally. playing: I'm currently suffering from an even bigger lack of time. The reason here is that we have been bitten by the Magic bug. Yes, we are playing MtG. Just try to stop us. :) listening: What a relief that you can listen to music while reading or playing. I have managed to follow your latest recommendations and found some familiar and new paths. So far Jewel and Medusa haven't been too popular on my CD player. PJ Harvey gets much more attention and I'm currently following Portishead into the Massive Attack and Tricky direction. collecting & assembling: A new, expanded version of the Happy Rhodes Encyclopedia will be available soon. I just have to do two or three more interview transcriptions. Volunteers are always welcome and would speed up the process. After this version (WWW only again), I will continue working on the versions for the other environments. ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." So, here I am! (at least until the last of todays postings). My gratitude goes especially to Meth who kept my name alive in those last months. It's good to see other people Klausing while I can't do it myself. I hope you're not too disappointed since I won't do it today either. Here's just a short update on a couple of things which have to get out before they disappear in those depths other people call their memory. Let me begin with some sad news: the fabulous new band "The Swaggercanes" has broken up :( I can imagine the collective eyebrow rising, so, yes, they haven't been mentioned on these pages before. Due to my lack of time they broke up before I could write about them. But their story is worth being told, and it's very likely that they'll make an appearance on the forthcoming HGP since I can't stop listening to them. They were a 5 piece band from the area where we are living. Three of them studying music, the singer studying english and one of the guys doing his social duty, which you have to do if you don't want to get drafted. In december '94 they had their first concert, playing at a Santa Claus party. The next concert they were supporting another local band I hadn't heard of, in front of an audience of 30. Among them was the guy who's organizing concerts for the Getaway, a local disco. He asked them would they like to open for the Cranberries! What a question, eh? :) It had to be an acoustic set, so they prepared some songs for this. In the meantime the Cranberries grew ever so popular over here. As the Getaway was sold out so quickly, the concert was rescheduled to Cologne for the Live Music Hall, where we saw them for the first time. On the stage now ("now" being then end of january '95) were Chris Bigos on acoustic guitar (who writes the music), Frank Aepkers on keys and Nicole Steffen singing (who writes the lyrics). In front of the stage... 2500 people waiting for the Cranberries. It was a wonderful set. Beautiful songs, well performed. Not only Claudia and I enjoyed it, the response of the crowd also was very enthusiastic. At the end of the show I was able to buy a demo tape of theirs, which is all they released, although they added the Cologne gig to it afterwards. Through an address on the tape I got in touch with Chris who provided me with the history of the band. They were hoping to release a CD this year... I was hoping to see them perform last friday... but they have broken up... bummer. ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." The group is mainly composed of Geoff Barrow - rhodes, Clive Deamer - drums, and Beth Gibbons - vocals, and Adrian Utley - guitar/bass. I would describe it as strongly influenced by hip-hop (although not a music I'm very familiar with). Anyone else heard them? Or know anything about them? Do they have anything else? I can't remember when we bought it. When Jim first got it I didn't think I'd like it, but I do--in one review I read they called it "trip-hop" which is fairly accurate. I love Beth Gibbons voice and how she uses it--very emotional though sung in a distanced way. It works together for me with the music in a way that that style of music doesn't for me very often. It's almost torch singing. I think Portishead did get some talk on ecto, but maybe before the digest was back up. - --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ------------------------------ From: Irvin Fei-Chiang Lin Date: Tue, 21 Mar 1995 18:41:52 -0600 (GMT-0600) Subject: more questions and some thanks!!! Neat-o keen, WFUV is playing my request for "Down Down". Sigh. What a gorgeous song. I requested it when I called to inform the evening host, Ben Soper that my egg is still standing on its end, a full 24 hours after the equinox. See, last night at 9:14 he urged all listeners to go get an egg out of the fridge and try to stand it on end, then call him with status reports. People were calling him an hour later saying theirs were still standing, and I got mine to stand up after only about 30 seconds and left it there overnight, figuring it would fall over during the night. I got up this morning, and it was still at full attention. I left it there, *knowing* it would fall over by the time I got home. But when I came back it was still standing straight up on its narrow end, pleased as can be. Now, what I want to know is: a.) why does it do this? b.) does it really only do this on the equinox? c.) is 24 hours some sort of world record, or is the whole "an egg will only stand on its end on the equinox" a crock?!? As a former (and recovering) master mage, I can say that the thrill of MtG usually dies after somewhere around seven months. The game is sometimes limiting in what you can do. It tends to be a hack and slash/ going through the motions kind of game after a while. It's fun while it lasts though. Have fun. If that sounded harsh, I didn't mean it to. I spent a lot of money on that game and after a while, I got bored with it. Ah well, I've met the peoiple who design the cards. They're really fun and interesting people. They played a game of "ironman" magic in front of us. They play with a couple of starter decks and basicly abuse the cards. If any rare cards come up, they give then away to the people watching. It was funny to see them rip, rewrite, and burn (Fireball) cards. They have a sense of humor about the game. Check you later. Bye... Chad Chad Lundgren--------->lundgren_c@music.lib.matc.edu 2211 N. May as well add my own little bit I suppose. I first heard (and saw) Portishead on the same Jools Holland 'Later' show as Sarah McLachlan. I'd set the video for Sarah but watched the show in any case. And Portishead more than made up for Sarah only getting to play one song. I was blown away, to put it mildly. They played two songs - 'Glory Box' (recent UK single) and 'Wandering Star'. The first of these had the required effect and will be very difficult to shift from its current position as Martin's Song Of The Year '95 (OK I first heard it in 94 but I bought the single in 95). Thing that got me most was Beth Gibbon's heartrending vocal, and the visuals backed up the impression that here was a woman tearing her soul out for the music. Pretty soon after I picked up the album and was suitably impressed. It took up a long residency on my CD player. I've heard many many people trying to describe it, but nobody's got it yet for me. However, I can't describe it so I can't complain! There is a large dollop of blues in there, and plenty of hip-hop type sampling and beats. However, I'd say it's pretty unique. As regards the make-up of the band it was originally just Geoff Barrow. He was known as a DJ and remixer before he became the band. Beth Gibbons is the only other full-time member, I believe, and is extremely private - won't do any interviews or discuss her lyrics in any way. BTW, this info is from an article in last month's Q magazine. If there is real interest then I'll wear out my keyboard and type it in. 'Dummy' was their forst release, but I think they're working on another at the moment. Geoff has stated that they're not very interested in playing live, although they have done some shows and DJ-ed at club nights. They have a WWW page with some very interesting stuff on it, including a multimedia presentation which was projected onto the MIF (Intelligence) building on Valentine's Day! I was going to tell you exactly where it is, but I can't find the info right now. Anyway, suffice to say that it's under the Homepage of Go!Discs (their record company) - http://www.godiscs.co.uk/godiscs/ They hail from Portishead (strangely enough) near Bristol in the UK. They have been lumped in wth the so-called Bristol Scene, whose other main force is Massive Attack. Other related artists include Tricky whose debut album has just come out and is, I'm told, excellent. OK I've rattled on plenty here. I could rave about Portishead all day. If you haven't heard them, try to catch something. If you have but want more info, visit the WWW page.
