It was done by the same crowd that did the new CD: Amy Ray as Jesus, Emily Saliers as Mary, Michael Lorant (of the Big Fish Ensemble) as Judas. It was, in a word, PHENOMENAL. Both the CD and the live show have the feel of being something the people did because they really, really wanted to -- while it's a benefit for gun control, it even includes (as the liner notes mention) people who disagree with the cause but really wanted to do the piece anyway. The show was a sort of concert version, with no set, minimal props, all the musicians on stage (or in the aisles, or running around the auditorium), and intentionally thrown-together, cheesy-looking costumes. Amy Ray was a standout in her acting and singing -- I'm infamiliar with the Indigo Girls, but will trying to pay more attention to them after seing this. Another standout was Benjamin of the band Smoke, who was striking as Caiaphas -- sort of like a deeper Tom Waits with a better voice. The audience was really into it too. At intermission, someone from the show came to us way in the back and invited us to stand up front. I did, as did some others. When the second act started, some people from the front rows of chairs came up to us and complained that they couldn't see -- and all of us went back and found seats. I was amazed at how cooperative everyone was. Even though I *hate* musicals, this has always been a favorite, and one of the few albums I ever memorized. I cried through most of the performance, even while grinning and bouncing up and down. The show was brodacst live locally (don't know about elsewhere), and was videotaped. I hope they make a broadcast or video of the visual show -- y'all got to see it! - ---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------- |||/ Joseph Zitt ==== jzitt@humansystems.com ===== Human Systems \||| ||/ Organizer, SILENCE: The John Cage Mailing List \|| |/Online Liaison, Third Annual Austin International Poetry Festival \| / Joe Zitt's Home Page\ ------------------------------ From: elionwyr@onix.com (Lewars Dusti L.) She's the only person I've seen play a metal tray and/or a plastic bucket, too. She's quite wonderful. And Sarah..well, words can't express it. I think her light show *alone* is worth the price of admission...she does some fantabulous things with her lights. Anyone know who's responsible? It's just amazingly creative how the sequencing and such is done. - She's lost the scrim that she'd been using to open the show with; reworked a lot of songs; her current version of "Fear" is going to raise goose-bumps; FINALLY saw her do "Black" - ah, be still my heart!; and she was much chattier than she's been at the last few shows I've seen her do. The unique aspects to this particular show were: 1) Sarah McLachlan was the host of the show (commentary, etc...) 2) Sarah did a rare (?) acoustic solo of "Ice Cream." Nothing else about Sarah McLachlan comes to mind.... They played some pretty interesting videos on 120 minutes such as PJ Harvey's "Down by the Water," Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You," etc., etc.... Got off a flight from Chicago to London at 9am this morning but seem to have left my brain somewhere mid-Atlantic! The trip was a business one, arranged at very short notice - hence I didn't have chance to set up meet'n'greets with any of the folks at ecto-central in Chicago, or any of the rest of you for that matter. I flew to Dallas last Wednesday then up to Chicago on Friday evening before leaving for home on Sunday eveing. All the free time I got was an hour's CD shopping in Plano on Friday and a morning tramping the streets of a cold and grey Chicago on Sunday. Anyway, after all that pointless waffle I do have something on-topic to say. While in Dallas (Plano actually but...) I was listening to KDGE - 'The Edge' - on 94.5FM. They are having a bit of a love affair with Sarah - in the 2 days I was there they played Good Enough 3 imes, Possession twice and Hold On once! And I was only listening on my way in to and out of the office daily! No-one , with the possible exception of Hootie and the Blowjobs, erm Blowfish (!) was getting anywhere near as much airplay. Darned fine. Did some CD shopping at Circuit City in Plano and somehow managed to restrain myself. Picked up 3 CDs - the aforementioned Hootie, Massive Attack's Protection and Happy's Building the Colossus - for 36 bucks! May not be all that special to you yanks, but it blows a poor Brit like me away. Apart from the fact that I couldn't pick up BtC here AT ALL, there's no way I could get 3 chart CDs for 36 pounds, never mind dollars! Anyway, poked around a couple of record stores in Chicago in vain hope of finding Freedom Sessions but no luck, so headed home. Ah well, work have just called so I have to plug this Mac ino the phone and do some work. They go out of their way to prove it to you. You can't listen for more than two hours without hearing a Sarah song. And now the other stations seem to be doing the same. You can hear Sarah now on: KDGE (94.5) "Cutting edge alternative music" KISS-FM (106.1) a bubblegum pop station that worships cheese. Q102 (102.1) a classic rock format that has started playing more popular music. So other than the country stations, you can basically spin the dial and you're guaranteed to hear Sarah at any given time. It's gotten me close to burnout on many artists I used to like. I was also at the Radio City show and must say I agree 100% with Meredith's assessment of the show. Fumbling seemed kind of awkward to start off with, Black and Plenty were superb, and I really missed Home and Vox. The guy that gave her the cookie monster is Rich, a good friend of mine. He and I give her presents whenever we see her. (I usually give her sunglasses 'cause she likes them and they are practical! I'd give her matzoh ball soup if it would keep- When she played here in Danbury during Solace she joined us for a home cooked meal and told me later that it was my soup that cured her voice problems!) Rich has been giving her cookie monsters in proportion to the size of the venue for years, which explains why Saturdays was enormous. We saw her for 2 seconds after the show- she was in a rush to get to a party Nettwerk was throwing for her- and she laughed about her growing collection of cookie monsters and eyewear! The light show was incredible. Graham has done a wonderful job. He told my friend Marty (who informed him that Sarah's tour won some award- Juno,maybe?- for best tour lighting) that since Nettwerk increased his budget for this short tour he could really get a chance to do what he envisioned. My favorite was the pink background with white spotlights Cathy Barrett is a doll! Meredith we must have missed you by 30 seconds- we were late getting there and came into the lobby during Paula Cole's set and went directly to where Cathy had the power macs set up. She was a sweetheart and took the time to introduce us to Terry McBride from Nettwerk so that I could give him a copy of my band's CD and press kit. I also gave her one to give to Sarah because I didn't think we'd get to talk to her with all the activities going on. She said she'd email me with Sarah's reaction to it. BTW Sarah was presented with a platinum disc by Clive Davis just before the show. Ash told us that they'll be breaking for a while so that Sarah has a chance to unwind and start writing new material. The new song she played was lovely but will probably be great as a band number. My only complaint was that the size of the hall of course diminishes the intimacy of the show. Not that she didn't handle it well, its just that I'm used to seeing her in smaller venues where the emotional contact is more immediate. Hopefully she wont go to arenas next - not that I'm begrudging her success - I can't see Madison Square Garden as being suitable for hearing the subleties of her music. Also I'm sorry I didn't get to meet Meredith and crew but I guess that'll happen at the 10k Maniacs show at Toads.
