Howdi, does anyone have any idea about when Tori's cereal commercial aired? Even the year will help. The reason I'm asking is that I'm going through tons of old videotapes, and I can pay special attention to shows from the Year Of Our Tori Commercial, if I didn't edit out the commercials. Who knows? It's not unthinkable that I might find it. I'm always finding weird things. For instance, I just went through a tape marked "SNL" and it was from 1986, when the host was Steve Guttenburg and the musical guests were the Pretenders (obviously the reason I taped it in the first place.) While fast forwarding through the bulk of the show (I really hate SNL most of the time) I saw Tim Robbins. Now, I really love Tim Robbins, so I re-wound and watched the segment. I was amazed! It was a short film, directed by Tim Robbins, and starred him as... BOB ROBERTS! This was *1986* remember, and the movie wasn't released until 1992 (I think. Wasn't it out at the time of the '92 USA elections?) This was the year that Tim Robbins paid the rent by appearing in _Howard The Duck_! Two full years before he made his name with _Bull Durham_. Cool....as a Tim Robbins fan, it was a unexpected nice tidbit. Anyone remember that Michael J. Fox Diet Pepsi commercial a few years ago, where a beautiful neighbor comes to his door to ask for a DP, which he doesn't have, so he goes out the window and runs down the street in the rain to a Pepsi machine? Well, anyway, I saw it on an old tape and did a double take, because the woman who asks for the DP is Jennifer Lein, who plays Kes on Star Trek: Voyager. I thought it was interesting :-) The only Tori I've found (pre-LE) was on something called "The Atlantic Celebration" which was a special about the record company that aired in 1988. At the beginning of the show, and various points throughout, the covers of Atlantic albums would scroll by, and yep, YKTR was one of them. I guess I'm glad I watched it before dubbing over it, but it's kind of a waste of tape to keep the whole show for a 3 second glimpse of an album I own. Well, I'll keep my eyes open in the 1987-1989 range. If I find the Tori commercial, I will rave about it. Does anyone remember seeing it? The possibilities of where I can look are many. We have literally hundreds of videotapes, and lots are from that era, everything from Academy Awards shows, to skating competitions, to various TV shows. Wish me luck! Hi I've only recently descoverd Happy Rhodes when a station here in southern cali. played "collective heart" - I think the station is Fm 101.9 Album Alternative-. Because here in the states they usually don't announce the track , I eneded up having to call the station and ask them "What is that Kate Bush song you just played?" very naifly. They nicely explained to me that it wasn't KB etc.. Anyway I bought the "Building the...." Anyway , I read somewhere about "Feed the fire" being one of HR's most popular tracks... so I called that same station & requested the song. They never played it , I stayed awake til' 5 in the morning and didn't here it. Anybody know anything about her? Our local station, WYEP, has also been playing "St. Teresa," and I love it. Joan Osborne is the artist's name, and the cut comes from an album called _Relish_. From what I've gathered from WYEP, it isn't out yet, but a coupla days ago, on a jaunt to my favorite used-music store, I found a promo copy of it, which, of course, left with me. Unfortunately, the CD is missing the pull-out cover, where we might have been able to find lyrics, addresses, etc. The back of the CD contains a blurb and track listing (see below), but that's it. I heartily recommend this album to all ectophiles. It's not quite true etco-fodder; it's a bit grittier that I usually associate with "true" etco-fodder (just my opinion, though). Joan Osborne's stuff is shows lots of blues and soul influences. Her voice ranges from raw to sweet. I'm definitely taken with this artist. Anway, here's the stuff from the CD: - ------- JOAN OSBORNE _RELISH_ A recent transplant to New York from Anchorage, Kentucky, Joan Osborne has amassed a solid following of loyal fans and enthusiastic music journalists through her barn-burning live shows and two independent releases. With a voice steeped in American gospel, blues, and classic soul, finished with rock 'n roll fervor, Joan has made a major step with _Relish_, her amazingly diverse and dynamic major label debut. 1. St. Teresa (5:20) 2. Man in a Long Black Coat (4:49) 3. Right Hand Man (4:57) 4. Pensacola (4:32) 5. Dracula Moon (6:21) 6. One of Us (5:21) 7. Ladder (4:11) 8. Spider Web (5:34) 9. Let's Just Get Naked (5:08) 10. Help Me (5:14) 11. Crazy Baby (6:31) 12. Lumina (3:08) Mercury 314-526-699-2AD Produced by Rick Chertoff, (c) 1995 PolyGram Records, Inc. - ------- That's all the relevant info on the back of the CD. There are, unfortunately, no song credits, but I don't recognize any as covers (not that *that* means much :). They also don't tell us about the two independent releases, which I'd like to acquire. I've heard "St. Teresa" and, more recently, "Spider Web" on WYEP. I really enjoyed most of these songs (notice the generous lengths, too!). The only one that leaves me fairly cold is "Let's Just Get Naked" -- it's just silly, and I don't think compares lyrically with the rest. It might be a matter of mood, but something about it grates on me. Anyway, that's all I can meaningfully say. If anyone else knows more, I'd love to hear it. The concert was as much a captivating experience as three months ago in Utrecht. The setlist had remained the same, too, except for the first song which was a new one, from the forthcoming album to be released in September (or so we heard). I won't go into the concert too much, though, since it is hard to explain in English how beautiful it all was. Suffice to say that Gil was still playing the guitar like a genius and Noa sang crystal clear and played percussion passionately. The most exciting experience was the signing session that was arranged after the concert. A local record shop was selling her most recent CD "Noa", and when every copy was sold, Noa and Gil appeared in the foyer to sign things. This doesn't happen much at concerts, and so that was a pleasant surprise: we didn't have to go backstage and wait in the cold, we just waited here. Following the ecto tradition, I thought it would be nice to confront Noa with Happy's music. I wasn't gonna give away my own CD's though, since it's harder to get her albums on this side of the planet and I have a fairly limited budget - so I did what any sane person would do: I made a tape. I compiled "RhodeSongs" with 5 tracks from "BTC", and added on the J-card my address and the address of Aural Gratification of course. So when she signed my "Ave Maria" CD-single, I asked her if she liked Kate Bush. She had mentioned her name in an interview in a local paper, and I was wondering about that. She answered "Yes I do!" rather enthusiastically, and so I gave her the tape and told her she'd probably like this as well. She thanked me of course, and posed for a photo I made. Let's hope she listens to the tape! Marion has also some things to say about the concert "after party" :) , and so I'll leave her to it. I'll just finish with the recommendation that you buy her album. It's well worth it. And Joe, thanks for the translations, they were so enlightening!
