Well! Vickie will be glad to know that I am now sick of "You Are Loved" by Victoria Williams. Don't get me wrong - it's a great song - but the local station here in Des Moines plays it constantly. I haven't gone a day in over tow months without hearing this song - at least twice! I like this station, but it tends to be another "top-40" in the adult alternative. I've requested Jewel many times - and have yet to hear her. However, you want REM, Ms. Crow (easy, Vickie!:-)), The Crows - you can hear these "artists" many times. Ask for Jewel, or Loreena, or even Happy, and you'll be lucky to hear them. I am NOT looking forward to moving back to Omaha. Their radio consists of "Classic Rock", "Modern Rock" (Stone Temple, Pearl Jam, et.al.), "COuntry/Western", etc. I believe their one, true alternative station (available only through cable) went under. Bummer. Looks like the 'ol tape drive will be used a lot (time to contact Doug). One point, though. The station does have one GREAT hour during the week. Sundays, from 1200 to 1300, is their "Women Who Cook" show, showcasing only the female voice. Then you WILL hear Happy, Loreena, other Victoria, etc. without hearing the same, usual dribble. There was one Sunday where the show started off with Happy. What a Happy Sunday! Anyway, sorry about the rambling. Just wanted to rate and rave for a while. Thanks to all for keeping me up on the latest (and definitely greatest!) female artists. I'm sad to report that Cindy has left the band. For those that don't know, df was characterized as having incredible harmonies and impassioned vocals. The latter is still true, but the incredible harmonies were sorely missed. I think anyone unfamiliar with the band wouldn't have any complaints about their current show (which I still recommend), but if you then saw them with Cindy, you would marvel at how much well placed backing vocals can do to a performance. Sonia said she was not retiring from music, which I hope means that she will still record with the band, just not tour. (She quit to be a full time mother.) Sonia and the band will be in the studios in march or april to start recording a new album. Despite my complaints, the show at the Birchmere was a pretty typical night for disappear fear. Some very touching love (or love gone awry) songs, a bunch of earnest political songs, and a fair amount of gay politics. Since the last time I saw them they were an accoustic duo, this show seemed most notable for how hard it rocked. I still think the band is pretty pedestrian, but Sonia reaches deep inside herself to bring a lot of emotion and feeling to her songs, and that goes a very long way. I recently bought a cd player that will remember how you program a disc, and now I can turn the 3rd df disc (self titled) into something worth listening to. I was surprised at how good it sounds once you throw away the 4 or 5 crummy songs. The impression you get is totally different. So, I'd like to throw away my scathing review of last year, and recommend this as half an album that is definitely worth having. (I still wholeheartedly recommend the older two albums for any Indigo Girls fans that are looking for something else to listen to.) Quote of the evening... After introducing 16 Roses as a song about how she didn't get laid on Valentine's Day (and backpedaling later about that being a much too simple interpretation), she introduced the next song as being about how she didn't get laid on St. Patricks's day. Well, maybe you had to be there. Unfortunately Austin is at least a complete, full day drive from Tucson. (Thanks to those who turned me on to Ingrid to begin with!) The fact that I have this card is actually Happy-related. When I saw Ingrid in Tucson last year I talked to her after the show and gave her a copy of Rhodesongs with a Happy card taped to the jewel box that had my address on it. I haven't given my address to Green Linnett or anyone else associated with Ingrid Karklins. So the Happy CD wasn't ignored if my address was taken from it for mailing. When I gave her the CD she said something like "Some of the best music you hear is just handed to you." :) I was listening to the local community radio station and heard what seemed like an acoustic version of Loreena McKennitt's "Santiago". I had missed a reference to her live promo CD on ecto, so I called the station and learned that that was what it was. I wish I had the time to be on the old ways list. Has anyone found the CD... was there ever a "box set" put out for _The Mask & Mirror_ like for the Visit? When I called Quinlan Road last year someone there (who sounded a lot like Loreena actually, but I didn't ask) told me they might be putting one out. The station is good but this new DJ was playing greater stuff than usual: Kate's "The Dreaming", DCD, Ani DiFranco, Tori's "Circles", and other things that sounded ecto to me but weren't familiar. Has Sheryl Wheeler (sp?) been mentioned here? We talked about ecto and I told him that with all the stuff he was playing that he really ought to check out Happy Rhodes (the station has at least 3 CDs). It was at the end of his shift and we talked long enough that he didn't have time to get to my Happy request though. Ironically he's from Austin but hadn't heard of Ingrid. I'm Rob Eubanks, and this is my first post to ecto. I've been on the list for a month or so, and I'm delurking to post a variety of things. First, you all might be interested in hearing how I heard of Happy's music. It was by a freak occurence. I was driving along, listening to some cassette when it suddenly started sounding funny. I tried to get it out, but it got jammed in my cassette deck. Anyway, the cassette player then defaulted to radio mode. I heard a voice that I instantly liked. I recall sort of "pleading" with the radio, saying "please, oh please tell me who this is! Well, not only was my prayer answered, but they played about 20 more minutes of Happy's music! The thing that was really weird was that during that time I tried to get my cassette out. I didn't manage that until just after the 30 minute Happy Rhodes music block was finished--and I mean *right after* it was done, the cassette just sort of "popped out". I haven't had any trouble with it since. I wish I knew what the station was, but I really haven't a clue. I almost never listen to the radio (except when a tornado is in the vicinity, or between cassette changes). Since I often accidentally hit the scan button, I don't even know if my radio's set to what it was then. Oh, well.... Anyway, I liked her music so much that I went straight to the music store (Streetside Records--not sure if it's a national chain or just a local one. Besides here in Columbia, there are a few in St. Louis). I couldn't even wait until Tuesday (everything's 20% off on Tuesdays). They had "Equipoise" and "Ecto" in stock, so I bought Equipoise. I liked it so much, I went back on Tuesday and picked up Ecto. The last time I liked an artist/group so much so quickly was when I first heard Clannad back in the early '80's. I'm still waiting to pick up Maire Brennan's new release. Apparently, it hasn't made it to Missouri yet. Anyone heard it yet? I've picked up recordings by other artists whose names I've seen in various past posts sent to ecto. Picked up V.W.'s "Swing the Statue" at Streetside, and just last night bought Jewel's "Pieces of You" at a new store which just opened here in Columbia (Vibes-- I think it is part of a national chain). Also, Vibes carries Happy's music--though presently, just one CD at a time it seems. The first time I went there, I picked up Rhodes I. Last night, I picked up Rhodes II (God, how I love her music!!!) Sorry for that momentary outburst, just can't help myself. Anyway, I suppose I'll go back to Vibes in another ten days or so, and I'll find just one "Rearm- nent" CD in stock. So far, the only HR recording I've had to special order was BtC. I've introduced a friend of mine to HR's music. She likes it quite a bit I think. I believe she's going to join ecto soon. This brings me to a question I have for anyone who cares to answer. Last night, my friend asked me if she could copy my Happy Rhodes CDs. I know plenty of other folks who borrow CDs from friends in dupe them onto cassette. I've done this in the past on rare occasions, but I always will go buy it in the stores eventually (I always feel a little guilty otherwise). Suffice it to say that I declined to let her dupe the CDs. I justified this by saying that if Happy's sales in other regions besides the northeast, didn't increase suf- ficiently, she'd never perform outside of that region. Well, it sounded good. Was I being anal about this, or do you all think I did the right thing? Feel free to answer via ecto, or e-mail me directly if you want. My full address is: c508779@MIZZOU1.missouri.edu. You definitely did the right thing -- I would *never* let a friend dub a full album by a lesser known artist on an independent label! (Individual songs on mix tapes are a different story, of course.) The loss of income from even a single CD will have an effect on Happy's livelihood. I have no qualms about letting my friends copy albums by artists who have sold zillions, like U2, or out-of-print stuff, so I'm not exactly a purist on this matter, either. > An aside to Jens _?_ (can't remember the last name) > > I think there is a Dane out there who has posted to ecto in the past. > I think his name is Jens.
