A deep and heart-felt thank you to all those who recommended Jewel so highly to this list (and especially to Jen Marchese and Jeff Wasilko)! Last night, solely on recommendations from this list, I and several friends went to see her in Toronto (which is a 3-hour bus trip each way for me, I might add). What can I say? She blew me away. I can't remember the last time I went to see a new artist who thoroughly impressed me like she did. Her clever (and often hilarious) lyrics were a joy to listen to. Her vocal acrobatics on some songs (and especially her yodelling, of all things) had us shaking our heads in amazement. She displayed an ease and familiarity on stage that was incredible for someone so young! She had so many funny stories to tell, and she told them like we were a bunch of old friends gathered around her living room, not a bunch of total strangers who had come to investigate an unknown artist (and let me tell you, she is UNKNOWN here in Canada... you can't get her CD here for another 2 weeks, and my college radio station doesn't even have a promo copy yet). And her songs are so catchy and sing-alongable! (Well, maybe not the yodelling.) It was funny, when we gave her loud and prolonged applause at the end, she gave us the "cut" gesture, saying (and I'm paraphrasing here) "Now this is where I get really embarrassed." But of course, we didn't let her off the hook, she deserved every moment of applause we gave her. I have no sympathy; she's just going to have to get used to sustained applause. :-) After the show, I told her she had a big following on the Internet, and asked if she knew that there was an electronic mailing list devoted to her and her music. She looked genuinely surprised and flattered, saying "People are so NICE!". :-) And then she got excited and gave me a postcard with a cute picture of her on the front as well as a listing of her tour dates, and asked me to post them. So anyway, here they are. I'm also transcribing what was written on the back, so anyone who wants to can get onto her snail-mailing list. - ----Start of postcard transcription------------------------------------ J e w e l pieces of you Tour Dates Hahn Theater San Diego, CA March 2 C'est What Toronto, ONT March 13 March 20 March 27 April 3 Urbus Orbis Chicago, IL March 15 March 22 March 29 April 5 Brazil Detroit, MI March 16 March 23 March 30 April 6 Insomnia Columbus, OH March 18 March 25 April 1 April 8 * and on the back of the card, it says: If you'd like to be on Jewel's mailing list or receive more information on upcoming tours, appearances, or releases, please fill out the following and return to Atlantic Recording Corporation 75 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10019 Attention: Product Development Jewel Where did you see Jewel? Hello ECTO! In December, my parents and I moved to the Chelsea District of Manhattan, which is north of Greenwich Village, and south of The Paramount and Madison Square Garden, from a suburban village, Valley Stream of Nassau County, Long Island, to be specific (so close, and yet, so far). Before then, I would always dream of attending a musical concert in NYC, but since they all started late, like 8PM or so, and because I would, more likely than not, attend alone, it would have been a little too much for me to take. Now, all I have to do is walk there or hop on a subway, bus, cab. Last week, I went to the Radio City Music Hall box office to attempt to get a ticket to Sarah McLachlan's concert this Saturday (3/18), but, alas, I was too late. However, before I could mourn too long, I was able to get a ticket for Victoria Williams, $20 general admission, at the Town Hall, 123 West 43rd Street, for her concert on the following Saturday, March 25 at 8PM. Just yesterday, I was able to get a ticket for Kirsty MacColl, $13 in advance (or $15 at the door), at The Tramps, 50 West 21st Street, on what would have been Sarah Saturday, this Saturday, March 18 at 9PM (21 years and over only). In the future, I will be looking for concerts in Greenwich Village and SoHo, too. I would have liked to see Shawn Colvin when she was promoting Steady On in Greenwich Village several years back; she is the only one I can remember who performed in Greenwich Village. I've got to stay tuned to rec.music.info and other sources, like ecto, gaffa, and rdt, of course. This is gonna be a pricey endeavor if my start is indicative of my future; I also made a reservation to see a modern dance exhibit this Friday night on Mercer Street between Prince Street and Houston Street (I dip my toe into SoHo). Same fellow apparently called back asking to hear more of it. The DJ tried to describe Happy, said, "There was a word I was thinking of, but I've completely spaced," gave the name of the album and track, mentioned Aural Gratification, and then played "Hold Me." At the end of the set, the DJ backannounced all the tracks and said that indeed "Hold Me" did sound somewhat like KaTe, sound the name of the track twice, and I think also said the name of the album again. Now all we need to do is get some of the closer, more mainstream stations to play her. - ---- Also in the set was a song called, I think, "St. Theresa" by Joan Osbourne. Great song, very ecto-ish. Besides, each ordered tapes comes complete with a full cassette label and a separate printed content list. * Sounds great! How do I get a copy of any or all of these tapes? Three methods are available for getting the tapes: * Establish a cassette account. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postage. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). After your first order, anytime you want a cassette, you just e-mail me, and I will fill your order as soon as possible without your mailing me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of medium-quality chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes will be added. * Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase whatever type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. * Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90 or C-100) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. * How much will it cost? If you use my stash of cassettes, the cost for the cassettes is currently $1.22 each. The packaging for mailing the cassettes is between $0.36 and $0.62, depending on the number of tapes mailed. The postage varies according to the number of tapes and the destination. So far, it has ranged between $0.98 and $16.70. Big help, eh? If you wish a more precise estimate of your postage costs, I can give you one via e-mail. US orders will be mailed book rate, taking five to seven days. Non-US orders will be air mailed, taking about seven to ten days. As for foreign payments, so far everyone has sent either American cash or a money order denominated in US currency. I believe that I can handle anything denominated in US currency, and probably any cashier's check (a check drawn on the bank's rather than a personal account). * Where do I send the order? To me. My mailing address: Doug Burks 2223 NW 59th St #2 Seattle WA 98107 USA Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. Please note that I will not process any e-mail orders unless you have an open cassette account. * Who can take advantage of the tape dubbing project? Any and all Ectophiles can place an order, but only Ectophiles are eligible. However, Ectophiles can place orders for friends. Please do not spread word of this outside the Ecto mailing list. This is not meant as elitism, simply a practically matter of keeping orders at a manageable level. * Can I add a tape to the tape dubbing project? If you have a tape or three that you would like to add, just ask yourself the simple question, "Would other Ectophiles like to hear this?" If you are uncertain, trying asking Ecto itself. In either case, if the answer is "Yes", I will be happy to add it. I have a loose policy of giving two free tapes from the project for every single tape submitted. However, please restrict yourself to contributing tapes which are either significantly different or of better sound quality than what already is in the project. For one example, the five tapes of Tori Amos' 1992 concerts are two or three too many. * Anything else I should know? Just a few odds and ends: If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
