Thanks to Nick for telling us about it (and the Jon Stewart Show appearance). For Victoria fans lucky enough to have The Movie Channel, the film "Gas Food Lodging" is on tonight (Mon night, Tues morn 12:50am Central time). Victoria has a song running during the ending credits that's not on any release, as far as I know. I forget the name, because I've only seen the movie once and haven't had a chance to get it on tape yet. It won't happen this time either, because we don't get TMC. We do get Showtime though, and today at 1:05pm (Central) "Return To The Blue Lagoon" will be on. I haven't seen it, and will only be seeing it because Milla's in it. Oh, the things we do for our goddessess... (At least GFL is a good movie, and has Brooke Adams, Fairuza Balk & Ione Skye in it) Carol King fans who can get Good Morning America (USA shouldn't be a problem, don't know about Canada), whould watch Wednesday morning. (ABC, 7am Central) Marianne Faithful with the Chieftains will be on Conan O'Brien Wednesday night. (NBC, 11:35pm Central) The Chieftains will also be on the Today show Friday morning (NBC, 7am Central) Bonnie Raitt will be in an hour long ABC Afternoon Special on Thursday. It focuses on her, and is called "Bonnie Raitt Has Something To Talk About". (ABC, 3pm Central) *Way* non-ectomusic, but I love her dearly: Arts & Entertainment channel's _Biography_ on Loretta Lynn airs tonight (Monday night) at 7pm & 11pm, Central time. "My New Gun" has been showing on Showtime, and besides being a good movie starring Diane Lane, has some excellent songs by Syd Straw in it. That's all I can think of at the moment. It was excellent! I especially enjoyed the part of the concert where she sang songs with only her and the piano on stage. Does anyone know what kind of piano that was? She said that it was electronic but that it had strings and hammers in it as well. I've never heard of anything like that, but it sound fascinating. Also, has anyone heard of the woman that she booked as her oipening act, Paula Cole? She had only a guitarist and drummer on stage, but got an overwhelming audience response. I'm not sure where to find any of her albums. Also Sarah played a new song at the end of the concert. She said that she felt since she had been touring so long that she needed some new material. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of it but it was a very beautiful sounding song she played on the piano. I've yet to be terribly disappointed. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up Dar Williams' The honesty room. Wow! It's really terrific. I was driving to work Saturday morning, and listening to "When I was a boy." That is one incredible song. Lyrically it really says so much about the men and women. I urge you to check it out (if you haven't already.) Got Annie Lennox' "No more, 'I love you's'" this past weekend. I have to say, it's pretty strange. I love Annie dearly, but I also loved The lover speaks and the original version of that song. While Annie's rendition is uniquely Annie, I miss the gut wrenching anguish of the original version. Annie's is almost too cool for the subject matter. I'm sure I'll get used to it. To all you Jewel fans, I picked up her disc this weekend - haven't listened to it yet. Michael P.S. Unfortunately, I can't remember any particular ectoish music from Russia (except Milla ;)) - but there are a few interesting bands in that country. In my opinion they've got some really crazy female artists in Georgia and Armenia too, but these are even more out of reach for us western people than the Russian ones are. For one of those "hopeful talents" I did the formal invitation at the embassy, to give her the opportunity of finding a job in Central Europe. This must be three or four years ago, and I never got to know what happened to her. You can't do anything about it... My favourite Russian songs were filed under "Kino" (cinema), done by a guy whose name I don't recall at the moment - he died in a motorbike accident some years ago. I regret having put the tape in my car, since tapes in my car seem to start wandering into cracks and slots, disappearing like Georgian singers... Very true. Being on the diehard side and already liking both John and Mary albums immensely (think I'll take one to work with me tomorrow), I'll be very pleased with the new band, I'm sure. But the marketplace dictates whether or not bands get to make records, especially when you're talking about major labels. Now I don't know if Electra is going to hold the rest of the band to their contract or just be satisfied with Natalie, but the new band would be a lot better off on Rykodisk, where John and Mary are contracted. These things will determine if the reconstructed band sticks around for more than a year or so. >Don't get me wrong -- I'm anxiously awaiting Natalie's solo effort, and will >gladly see her live if/when she comes to my area. I have taken inventory of my life, and I have discovered that I have an extra sealed copy of HR^5, to date the only Happy Rhodes single available to ecto- philes. I picked it up at the Middle East show in January and it turns out that its original intended home is no longer available, so I'm offering it to the first interested ectophile to contact me about it. For those of you who aren't aware of what this item is, it's a radio promo that was released around the time of _Equipoise_ to promote airplay of Happy in general, and featured her cover of "Ashes To Ashes" as an incentive for jaded radio types to check it out, and it worked *very* well. All tracks are also available on _RhodeSongs_ (which was released later), but this is a very rare item and a worthwhile addition to any Happy fan's collection. Tracks are, in order: Feed The Fire (album version) Ashes To Ashes Save Our Souls (acoustic version) I Say (album version) Feed The Fire (acoustic tribute version) ... and a special hidden sixth track, the surprise of which I won't spoil for you. ;> This item is available for $10, which is exactly what I paid for it. I'll take care of the postage if the purchaser is from the US, go halfsies on it if you're from away. So don't delay ... supplies are *very* limited. It's not signed, alas, but that can easily be remedied with one SASE sent in the general direction of Bearsville, NY with a note asking nicely included. :) Don't miss this opportunity to pick up a true Happy Rhodes collector's item! - -- offer open to ectophiles only. (a broken mast.) Yes, the french boat broke its mast. The medias are not very kind with the skipper, Marc Pajot, who couldn't enter the semi-finals even with one of the biggest budget (50 or 80 M$ if I remember well). And now, something completly different... I bought a NTSC VCR this week-end and to test it before buying I brought Sarah video "Fumbling Towards ecstasy". The seller asked me immediatly "Who's that? She's great". I explained who she is and how I know of her etc...He phoned me yesterday to tell he has just bought the Fte CD and to ask me for a copy of all the sarah stuff I have! I think I'll bring "Ecto" when I'll buy a new CD player there. :-) For me the video was the first time I saw her live (I missed her when she came to Paris last year). She's amazing, most of her songs are better played live than in studio and that's saying a lot! I especially like Hold on and Fte (this made me cry in front of my TV!). Sarah, when will you come back in Europe?! I can't wait! On a more ecto-related I plan to send a tape of Happy to a radio station in Belgium who play a lot of female artists. Can anyone tell me if I can do it, ie if her management is OK for that. Of course I would put AG info with the tape. Thank you all to made me discover all these great artists. I now have a lot of records by artists who are completly unknown in France. But ordering via CDConnection or CDNow is a painful process particularly when it comes to custom formalities. There aren't many songs that stand out above the rest because all the songs on the album are so well done in its musical arrangements and vocal harmonics.
