You suppose that this is homeostasis in action, after the events of last November? Clearly, the concept of giving up memory lapses for Lent isn't working out for me :-). Simply put, a couple of senators have proposed a particularly heinous piece of legislation titled the "Communications Decency Act of 1995" (Senate Bill S. 314). Basically, the bill would subject all forms of electronic communication -- from public Internet postings to your most private email -- to government censorship. The effects of the bill onto the online industry would be devastating -- most colleges and private companies (AOL, Compuserve, etc.) would probably have to shut down or greatly restrict access, since they would be held criminally liable for the postings and email of private users. Obviously, this bill is designed to win votes for these senators among those who are fearful of the internet and aren't big fans of freedom of speech -- ie., those who are always trying to censor "pornography" and dirty books and such. Given the political climate in this country, this bill might just pass unless the computer community demonstrates its strength as a committed political force to be reckoned with. This, my friends, is why I have filled your mailbox with this very long message. A petition, to be sent to Congress, the President, and the media, has begun spreading through the Internet. It's easy to participate and be heard -- to sign it, you simply follow the instructions below -- which boil down to sending a quick email message to a certain address. That's all it takes to let your voice be heard. (You know, if the Internet makes democracy this accessible to the average citizen, is it any wonder Congress wants to censor it?) Finally, PLEASE forward this message to all your friends online. The more people sign the petition, the more the government will get the message to back off the online community. We've been doing fine without censorship until now -- let's show them we don't plan on allowing them to start now. If you value your freedoms -- from your right to publicly post a message on a worldwide forum to your right to receive private email without the government censoring it -- you need to take action NOW. It'll take fifteen minutes at the most, a small sacrifice considering the issues at hand. Remember, the age of fighting for liberty with muskets and shells is most likely over; the time has come where the keyboard and the phone line will prove mightier than the sword -- or the Senate, in this case. Yours in liberty, -don Here's what you have to do to sign the petition: send an e-mail message to: S314-petition@netcom.com the message (NOT the subject heading) should read as follows: SIGNED eg. SIGNED lsewell@leland.Stanford.EDU Laura Sewell YES If you are interested in signing the petition, I would highly suggest investigating the details of the situation. Of particular note were Me'shell N'Dege O'cello (I am still not sure how to spell it, but I think I can pronounce it now), Annie Lennox, Carly Simon, Tori Amos, Celine Dion, Salt and Pepper and Spinderella, and a few others. Did anyone notice that Tori did not seem happy at all? She hardly spoke, didn't really smile, and paled next to Carly's ebulliance. Did anybody see February's Details magazine? There are some VERY interesting pictures of Michael Stipe, including one with Tori. Annie Lennox won the oddball appearance award last night. She had on a patent-leather swedish schoolgirl fetish outfit. Plus (a wig? I hope) hair that resembled Mickey Mouse on a bad day. Speaking of whom, our local POP/Top40 station has started to play her new single. It is really great, sounds rather mystical, and inspirational. (Time approximate after basketball.) So there it is, folks. All are welcome to watch with us. Feel free to arrive after 7:30 or so. We'll get some snax, feel free to bring anything you enjoy. I'll be only too happy to demonstrate the new hifi, and if brni can make it, he may bring his new Chapman Stick. We have electric and acoustic guitars available for the jam-minded. Should you wish to bring a VCR for that first-generation video quality, be sure to bring extra hookup cables (either RF or baseband). If anyone still needs directions, please email me! Finally, in a moment of ectosynchronicity, Prism will have a movie after the concert. What else could it be but "Poetic Justice"? (ed. note - it could be a good movie! Unfortunately, it's this one.) I haven't posted to ecto in quite a large nugget of time, so maybe I can fit this in before Seinfeld. Just bought Jewel's new CD - it's resplendent. ("resplendent"? did I just say "resplendent"? Oh my...) I highly recommend it. She's "ballsy" (Wally called her that once) to have so many "raw" live songs on her debut, but most of them sound yummy. I can't get "Painters" out of my head - I think that's one of the best songs ever written, by anyone. I'm pleading, does ANYONE know the entire sentence that Jewel says at the end of her concerts, before she partakes in her soup? Ends with "at all costs get perfect moments stuck between your teeth" - what's the rest? I heard Happy Rhodes for the first time recently. A friend gave me the first 5 songs from Warpaint. I like it! But it was not what I was expecting. I had some weird errogenous (oops) erroneous idea that she was Folk. She sounds alot like Annie Lenox (Eurythmics), by the way, but I like her voice better than Annies. I LOVE the second song on Warpaint. Does she do all the synths and percussion programming herself? For those of you interested in all this mailing-list-as-community stuff, check out the book "The Virtual Community" by Howard Rheingold... a whole book about it. Great book. What did you think of >Dar Williams? A house concert is held at a private residence, usually a house, or it could be at an apartment, or one of those apartment house party rooms. The one I attended for Dar Williams was held in a house and about 50 people attended. This house was a ranch style house with a nice sized family room, and that where the actual performance took place. This house was not a mansion or super luxury palace, but just a typical family type home. These particular home owners sponsor these house concerts on a regular basis because of their love for the music. I understand that the attendance ranges from 7 or 8 people to about 40. The 50 for the Dar concert was the largest crowd they have ever had. Each attendee is asked to donate $10.00 and that all goes to the artist. Also, everybody brings some sort of pot luck things, so there is good food and drink available. Its a lot like going to your friends house for a party. A real enjoyable intimate way to see a performance. What do I think of Dar, well, I think she is absolutely delightful as a performer. She's has a very distinctive, expressive voice, and her song writing is sensitive, clever, and spiced with a sense of humor that is original, witty, subtle, and in a class of its own. I just love the cleverness of her lyrics and the special little effects she adds to her delivery. For example in the song "The Babysitter's Here" after she describes the babysitter and her boyfriend, and then kind of mutters under her breath "someday I'll have a boyfriend just like that". BTW, her CD "Honesty Room" is available thru Hear Music, and I think you can order from Ardwork Press, P.O. Box 814, Northampton, MA 01061-0814 , $16.50 including postage. My initial reaction was the same (a bit to sickly sweet), but in hindsight they seemed to be truly enjoying themselves on stage, and making great music while they were at it. Compared to some artists, they have loads more stage presence...you can tell they're comfortable up there. I bought their CD "River of Fallen Stars" as well, and it's been glued to my CD player... _Wall of Death_ (a song about a carnival ride where one tries to overcome centrifugal force while mounted on a speeding motorcycle) really caught my ear at the show, and it's quite nice on the CD as well--the harmony between Maura and Pete's voice is amazing....
