Hi! Well, it's been a couple of weeks, during which time I've barely had time to take care of basic bodily functions, never mind adequately read and reply to interesting stuff that has found its way into my e-box. Looks like it's time to klaus again! Urs inquired: >I've been listening to a lot of radio recently, and one group of people >caught my ear. They go by the name of Tuck and Patti (or Patty, I can't >tell which :) > >Can anyone tell me more about them? Yes, it's Tuck and Patti. They're on Windham Hill, and I seem to recall that Tuck was involved with another similar musical project before he got together with Patti (who I believe is his wife, though I might be mistaken), but I can't remember what that was. So basically, I guess I do also know about and like them, but no, I can't tell you more about them. :} >KATE BUSH: Difficult to describe, but I want one. :> :> :> That definition could also be applied to Tori Amos... Marion mentioned: >Jann Arden. She's up for a Juno Award for Best Female Artist, I think -- it's one of the categories Sarah McLachlan is also nominated in. (The Junos are the Canadian version of the Grammy Awards.) I heard a song of hers on the radio the other day, and it was nice, but it didn't have me pulling over writing a note to myself to Buy This Tomorrow or anything... >Then I heard her on the 1194 >Happy Gift Project (with Neil Young's "Birds" - thanks >David!), and that track attracted my attention again. ?!? Oh yeah... there is a song of hers on there. Gotta pay closer attention next time. :> >Kerri Anderson. >~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >Another singer that I would like some information about is >Kerri Anderson. Marcel's raving about her CD "Labyrinth"; I'm >not too sure about it yet - there are some good moments on it >but mostly it's too much ordinary rock for me. According to >Marcel I just have to listen to it more often... :) Anyway, >he asked me if I could ask you about her. Could anybody tell >me something about her? What are your opinions about her? My opinion of her pretty much exactly approximates yours. When _Labyrinth_ came out I played it on my show, but wasn't moved to buy it for myself. Not much There there, if you catch my meaning. Not overly original, either, but nice songs to play on the radio on a warm sunny day. From: Chandra Lekha Sriram >okay, none of these are directly ecto bands, so ignore me at will Erm, they look like ecto bands to me! :) >innocence mission--bright as yellow (ep). karen peris has been possessed >by hope sandoval of mazzy star. i like both, but this is definitely a >different sound for im. can't wait to see what the album brings in april. Eeek. That's *not* a good sign just on the surface, but then again I haven't heard the song, so I should probably just shut up. At this juncture, I would like to state that Neal Copperman's story of how he defeated the Muzak Monster in his office had me rolling on the floor. :) John Shepard tossed about: >But here goes. Just to be thrown out for discussion, the following entry >from my CD collection: > > praise I have that CD (danke, Klaus :). Listened to it quite a bit during the week after I got it and played it on my show a lot, then promptly forgot about it. And now time for the Truly Stupid Question of the day (but I've been wondering about this for a while now): Are Russian computer keyboards in Cyrillic or Roman letters, or both, and how does that work? Dirk complained: >I gave up going CD shopping. It's no fun anymore because most of the >local shops only carry the stuff that's in the charts. And CD prices >are much too high in Germany. Needless to say, I didn't order it and bought it from their biggest competition. That Sam Goody outlet is gone now, too.... karma does work! >As long as people are spending that much money for CDs they won't lower the >prices. No, they won't -- they'll just hike them higher. The suggested retail price for major-label CDs in the US just went up to $17.98, because Aerosmith's record label decided to put that price on their latest album just so they could say, "Look, people will pay that much for a CD, so it's okay to charge that much for everything now." Bleagh. Chris M. replied: >Mitch said, > >> As long as the tables of contents for _Rhodeways are in the Happy >> encyclopedia on the Web, it would be nice to have the full texts there as >> well. Considering >someone goes out of their way to produce it, probably at little >or no profit, they deserve our pithy cash. I agree 100% with this. However, as issues go out of print I don't see a problem with scanning them in for all to see ... it's really not worth it to do a second printing just for back issues unless demand for them equals demand for the newly printed issues, which I don't think will happen. In fact, if people take a look at the first couple of issues online, that might convince them to subscribe. >Digressing, does anyone know anything about a new album by >Brenda Kahn? I heard on the radio that it was coming out soon, >but I've yet to see mention of it anywhere else (including my >local record store) As Irvin explained, Brenda got dicked over by her record label and the album is now in limbo. woj and I saw her play at the Sidewaulk Cafe in Soho on the 17th, in a performance that Brenda said was one of the first on her "Fuck Sony Tour". :) She explained the story of what had happened, and spent the rest of the evening referring to Sony as "sssssony". The biggest problem she now faces is the fact that since she is no longer with the record company, she has to pay back the $50,000 Sony gave her to tour with Jeff Buckley last fall. This is a Not Good Situation for her, since she has no means of easily doing this. The Sidewaulk Cafe pays their musical acts courtesy of a passed hat at the end of the set, and I put in considerably more than the $1 I saw most other people giving. She was also "giving away" promo cassettes of her album, which is called _Destination Anywhere_ for a "suggested donation" of $10 -- she said she "just happened" to come across a few boxes of the tapes the last time she was in Sony's offices, and was going to "give them away" to her fans on this little tour. ;> We bought one, and I must say, it's different! It's nothing like her first two albums: for one thing, she has a band, and they're all plugged in. I've only listened to it once, but I detected a distinct Liz Phair sensibility permeating it. I hope it manages to get officially released someday, because the college rock world is going to eat it up and beg for more. Brenda's e-dress is brendakahn@aol.com, and the mailing list (which I think she runs herself) is eggsondrugs@aol.com. If she comes to a cafe near you check her out -- she's a really great performer (she's playing just an acoustic guitar, even the new songs) and she desperately needs the support! Jane_Fan opined: >I was really suprised by the difference between Over The Rhine's >Patience and Eve. Whoa!!! I'm still boycotting any and all stores that have the word BLOCKBUSTER in their name, but that's cool anyway. Anthony Baxter said: >On to other things - I finally got to watch Laurie Anderson's "Home Of >The Brave" on video last night - wow! have any other shows of hers been >released on vid? "HOTB" was a nice thing to test >my new VCR on, anyway :) (we're now a 4-VCR household - but two of them >are Betamax machines (dont ask :))) There is a collection of Laurie Anderson videos out there (dunno if it's still in print -- I'm kicking myself constantly for not picking it up the times I saw it in the stores), but Home Of The Brave is the only full- length performance video. I hope there are plans to release a video of the Nerve Bible show -- I'd love to have that on tape. I wish I >could remember what has been said about them because I don't know any more >about them now. Hmmm, I can't say as I ever heard HNIA compared to Danielle Dax before. Hearing just one bit of an album isn't the best way to listen to them, since their albums are _albums_, really one piece connected by a variety of musical themes and bridges. I never played them on my show very often for this very reason -- I did play them on occasion, but I never felt right doing it. Thanks to Damon Harper for posting the Web sites from the Laurie Anderson t-shirt! Sadly, the ecto Web page was absent. We'll have to do something about that for the next time. Yesterday Tamar brought up the maxim that any musician or band with the word Crow in their name is going to be an instant hit (e.g. Sheryl Crow, Counting Crows, The Black Crowes). Likewise, something with the word Jesus in it is going to be big (e.g. Jesus Jones, Jesus And Mary Chain). It then follows that if you're going to start up a band, the surefire recipe for instant megastardom has to be to call it Jesus Crow. If anyone wants to try this one out feel free, but e-mail me for a list of people to whom you will owe part of the royalties. ;> Eeeep, this is a long one! Sorry about that... I'll try not to wait so long between regurgitations next time, though I can't promise anything. :) +==========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| |Boonton, NJ USA finger info at: mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu| +==================***The Christian Right Is Neither***====================+ ------------------------------ From: neilg@sfu.ca (Neil K.) This is certainly very sad news. Although I no longer frequent #ecto I have good memories of Rod's contributions to the conversation there. My condolences to Axel and his family. I too hope this is not true. In either case, he certainly had a positive effect on #ecto, and although I never met him in person, his unselfishness and kindness showed through in #ecto. His presence there was missed even before this news, whether it is true or not. Peace, Rod... here or beyond. /-\ |_ |= >< Alex R.
