Pravatiner" Date: Thu, 16 Feb 95 18:31:47 EST Subject: Christmas comes but 365 times a year and other stories It's beginning to get a little kafkaesque. Yesterday I saw a bunch of houses with Christmas decorations still up, which were much more elaborate than most surviving yuletide tchotchkes. I only saw one valentine heart, by contrast. It reminded me of the time I regularly passed by a residence that kept a Christmas wreath up even inito the summer months; I eventually got to wondering to myself, "Who died?" :-) All this, in turn, brings to mind the passage in Dickens _Christmas Carol_ where Scrooge supplicates to the ghost of Christmas future to let him live, and he will keep the spirit of Christmas alive all year. Wonder what all these present-day homeowners are trying to atone for? :-) While at the dentist the other day, I was able to consult the Dolores O'Riordan interview in the February _Request_ once more, and the Irish slang for "girly-girl stuff" (her words) that she used to describe Tori Amos is "twee." WRT someone dropping the name of Robin Lane last week: A couple of weekends ago I ran across my copy of one of the albums she did with her band, the Chartbusters, in the 70s or 80s. I first heard, and liked, a particular song of theirs on the radio in 1981. Later I read that her father had been the bandleader on the old Dean Martin show. Toward the end of the decade, I ran across a cassette of theirs in a used store, and naturally snapped it up. Unfortunately, it lacked the track that had turned me on some years earlier. I subsequently read that she had given up the pop music scene to become a born again or a Jesus freak or something like that. End of history lecture for today :-). Welcome to John, Our Man in Indianapolis. It will be nice to have multiple sources of obscurantist posts (I forget how he himself phrased it) on the list; no burden of this sort should be borne alone. :-) And to whomever was falling all over themselves the other day for their supposedly irrelevant posting: if that was considered a major felony in the ecto world, I would have been flamed into oblivion years ago. So as the makers of Ban roll-on might say, don't sweat it :-). WRT Neal's fighting the good fight against Muzak: Too bad he didn't get the chance to hack Happy's music into the circuit. Oh well. As long as the tables of contents for _Rhodeways are in the Happy encyclopedia on the Web, it would be nice to have the full texts there as well. Perhaps someday, someone will be able to work on that. And since pictures can be placed on the same page as text, maybe the illustrations can be worked in as well. (The same goes for the old AG newsletters.) Mitch ------------------------------ From: "Lundgren, Chad" Date: Thu, 16 Feb 95 17:38:08 CST Subject: Re: Stuff... 'Lo all, Well John, I can certainly identify with what you're going through right now. I was a tad overwhelmed when I first came onto the list. The only artist regularly discussed that I was into was Tori Amos. But after a while, I checked out Kate Bush, Sarah McLachlan, Jane Sibbery, Milla, the list goes on. Even now, I still haven't chcked out a lot of the artists they're discussing recently. Oh, to make sure I don't ruffle any feathers, add Happy to the previous list of new acquisitions.;) Anyhow, the point is, you will spend some money, but this list is great for new music suggestions. Guess I could even ask it myself, but I tend to not be much of one to hang out and chat with an artist, even when the folks are as friendly as Wally and Jewel. Have to admit it was pretty flattering when I said I was Neal and they said they'd heard lots about me. Anyway, i was wondering how Jewel perceived her dealings with Atlantic affecting her music. There have been some noticable changes that started occuring since she got her record deal, and have continued since then. Of course, these are changes I have perceived, and may have nothing to do with Atlantic's influence. Feel free to rephrase, paraphrase, or just plain throw away. Maybe ask her what she feels about bootlegging, without telling her I have a bunch of tapes of her show. To be fair, almost everyone I've made a tape for (myself included), has bought the "official" bootleg tape, so it's not hurting her revenues, and in fact helped generate interest in her. Well, guess I really don't have any well formed questions. Enjoy another show. After lurking here for several days I thought it might be time to introduce myself. My name is Chuck, I live in Danbury CT, I sell eyeglasses for a living and play in a popular local band called Sans Cherubs (5-piece/3 women & 2 men/lots of acoustic guitars/vocals/very ecto-friendly!). I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the past week's digests and certainly have many similar interests musically as all of you, in particular an undying love for Happy! My main reason for posting today was to alert all those that may be interested in The Innocence Mission that their new CD single "Bright As Yellow" is out. The new album is called "Glow" and will be released shortly (no date listed). I'll be getting the single tomorrow and will post a short review if this has not been done already. That's all for now..... : ) ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Thu, 16 Feb 1995 20:41:01 -0500 Subject: Re: Jewel in DC, part 1 A few more notes about the DC show. I was quite flattered when I went up to talk to Jewel and Wally before the show and they knew who I was more from everyone on ecto's mention than from remembering me in San Diego. Neal, we've been hearing a lot about you. Guess if I was more the outgoing chatting with artists type they might have remembered me better than as that guy over there who looks kind of familiar. Jewel had one of the most entertaining soundchecks I have ever seen. The only one that came close was Heidi Berry improvising and playing with The Moon and the SUn for about 20 minutes. Jewel picked at her guitar and improvised chorus after chorus about the audience and herself. She described it as simple Dr Seuss rhyming, but it was pretty fun anyway. She started with me moving here from San Diego just to see her, and went on to Jeffy hearing about her on the internet, which I guess is more intelligent than from the tv set. As far as Jeff's comments, I think there are a few things to be said in Jewel's defense. The sound wasn't that good, and her song selection was erratic. She seemed to cluster on a long set of "bubble-headed blonde" songs, which make her seem pretty lightweight. I've seen her do that before, and other times I'll see her play only the most intense, mature, depressing songs for about a half hour straight. I thought the jokey songs do seem a bit derivative, though they can still be fun (except for Big Man, Small Car, which stopped working for me ages ago. Actually that song has been slowed down, edited and revamped, all to ill effect. It did work when it was fast and half incomprehensible though). Her songs do seem reminiscent of things, but I can't ever place what. It's their instant familiarity, almost like a classic folk song sometimes, that is part of their appeal to me. I don't really see a Cranberries connection though. Accept for the fact that Jewel could sing like Dolores if she wanted to, which she demonstrated to hilarious effect, her voice didn't seem to have that light airy feel I think of from the Cranberries. I also bought the official bootleg tape "Shiva Diva Doo Wop", which has a small number of excellent songs on it. I was pretty much obligated, even though I already have them. I'd be quite the jerk if I bootlegged her shows and wouldn't buy her tapes. i was pleasently surprised that about half the people there bought tapes afterwards. Well, that was more than I intended to say. Hope everyone who can takes advantage of the opportunity to see her while she's out here. After all, the shows are FREE. I made this offer to the list a while back, and also sent it off to the Ecto classifieds... which I haven't seen in quite some time, and never with this. So here it goes again. I live near not one but two stores that regularly stock one of each of Happy's albums. (One partly due to my influence.) If they are out of stock on any particular one, they both can order it, and both places take about two to three weeks to get a special order in. One place uses a distributor and one uses several smaller houses; neither is really faster (I have done several orders with both places in the past). If you are having problems finding a Happy CD, I will be more than willing to pick one up for you and send it to you at cost + $3 shipping ($6 outside of the continental US and Canada; that's Priority/1st Class in the US and air-mail outside). I will spring for a padded envelope 'cause we've got about a million of them around here. I will put a CD on hold or order at the time of an e-mail requesting it and pick it up when I get the money (and when it comes in, if I have to order it). I am making this offer because, even with all appropriate information, it's never a sure thing if an order is going to work, and I *know* both of these places are reliable and can get all of Happy's CDs. (I only lack Rhodes II and Equipoise, and have seen both in both places, so it's just a matter of time; today, the new Belly album took precedence.) The only wrinkle is that I, at this time, cannot accept personal checks. I will return any funds for unattainable items at my own expense. If anyone wants to take me up on this, please e-mail me at cinnamon@one.net. A few quick things I've been meaning to mention: Public THANK YOU to John and Jenn Sandoval for hosting a thoroughly enjoyably wonderful ectogathering at their house last weekend, and to Jeffy for providing the video entertainment (and, by extension to Vickie-n-Chris for making it available to him in the first place :). It was a lot of fun. The next day woj and I spent in D.C. with Valerie Nozick committing a variety of regrettable fiscal acts, which will be detailed later on in this posting. But first... - -- Has anybody heard the new Chieftains album? You know, the "Wow-we're-so- cool-we-got-18-Big-Name-Artists-to-sing-for-us" disc? Am I the only one who almost retched when she heard Sinead O'Connor sing "He Moved Through The Fair"? Excuse me, but it's *She* Moved Through The Fair, and if you're really that paranoid then you shouldn't be singing a song that's supposed to be about and to a woman anyway. Loreena McKennitt does a *much* better job with that song, and she keeps the originaly pronouns intact, too. I *hate* when people do that... grrrr. - -- Thanks to Bob L. for forwarding the official press release about Happy at The Bottom Line. I forgot about the Required Listening Card -- I'll have to make a note to bring mine with me next Friday. :) To those who are attend- ing and let me know about it, my friend should have bought the tickets today. Let's start working on where and when we're going to meet, yes? - -- On a related note, WFUV has really been pushing this show, and at least the morning guy (who otherwise is an annoying idiot) is *very* excited about the fact that Happy is on the bill. I had been getting frustrated because all week he'd been going on and on and on about Happy while only giving the other 3 artists on the bill a cursory mention and then *not playing anything by her*, but this morning he redeemed himself by following up his daily orgasm with the acoustic "Feed The Fire" from _RhodeSongs_. He says he's only recently begun to realize just how phenomenal Happy is (his exact words). Pretty keen, says I. - -- Even more peripherally related, Loreena McKennitt was (is?) the featured artist on WFUV today. It's been a veritable orgy of Loreena on the airwaves today -- *very* cool. Folks, if you're ever in the NYC/Long Island/Northern New Jersey/Southern CT/Westchester area, tune your dial to 90.7 and you won't be disappointed. No matter what woj thinks, WFUV is a great station, and is just about the only even remotely ecto-friendly outlet around here. And now to the damage report: woj, Valerie and I went CD shopping on Sunday. We assaulted Tower and HMV (both in and near Georgetown). The casualties: our credit balances. The spoils: 12 discs for me, 15 for woj, and 7 for Val, who is on a student budget and thus was able to exercise more restraint. I'm not even going to think about what those 12 discs cost. Here's what I got: The Nields, _Bob On The Ceiling_ I've been looking for this for months. I know I could easily order it from them directly, but I wanted to get it in a store and show my support. When I did find it, the lack of a bar code completely stymied the entire HMV staff and shut down the entire bank of cash registers for 10 minutes. The manager asked me, "Do you always buy such obscure stuff?" But of course. Anyway, this album *rocks*. It's incredibly amazing, and I am in love with it after just one listen. In fact, I think I'll put it on again. It's quite a pleasant surprise, since past Nields studio recordings have been far inferior to the live versions, but they seem to have gotten over that for this one. Highly recommended. Disappear Fear, _Live At The Bottom Line_ This was was also missing a bar code. ;> Haven't listened to it yet. Kirsty MacColl, _Galore_ Early, somewhat rare, and easily attainable Kirsty all on one disc. A great introduction to her stuff -- it even includes her Pogues songs. :) Wonderful to drive to. Dougie MacLean, _Marching Mystery_ This is his new one, and I've been hearing it a lot on WFUV and loving every track, so I decided to buy the album. Celtic-flavored mellow folky fare... great for snuggling on Sunday evenings to. Joni Mitchell, _Turbulent Indigo_ I finally decided that these songs are too strong to pass by, even if the tattered state of her decimated voice is almost too depressing to bear. It's her best work in years. Joni Mitchell, _Hejira_ I just *had* to get this one. I'm slowly trying to get all of her albums, but I had to start here -- for Jaco Pastorius' bass if nothing else. Wow. This is an all-time classic album. Eurythmics, _We Too Are One_ This is the best album they ever put out, and, sadly, it turned out to be their last. My tape of it died many years ago and I just got round to replac- ing it on CD now. Some things just take a while, y'know? :) Michelle Shocked, _Short Sharp Shocked_ Another one I finally got around to getting on CD. Haven't listened to it yet and it's been a *long* time since I've heard the whole album, so I'll get back to you -- I do know it's worth it!!! Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, _Three Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest_. Bela is God. And Victor Lamont Wooten gave the god of the bass lessons. Anonymous 4, _Love's Illusion_ and _On Yoolis Night_ More hauntingly achingly beautiful Medieval vocal music from the best female Medieval vocal ensemble of our time. Besides, HMV was having a sale on all Harmonia Mundi releases. :) I also picked up another copy of Ingrid Karklins' _Anima Mundi_ for A Certain Ectophile Who Shall Remain Nameless But Has Yet To Respond To My E-Mail. ;> That thing is a *bitch* to find in stores!!!!! Whoa. What a haul. Remind me to leave my wallet in New Jersey when I venture down to D.C. to visit Valerie again this weekend, okay????? Oh -- Tower indeed had Happy on the listening station, though she was filed under "H" (and there were too many discs to surreptitiously move over to "R", they wouldn't have fit over there anyway). Valerie and I did manage to sneak some of John Sandoval's Happy Cards in between copies of _BtC_ in the racks, so when somebody picks up a disc they'll see the card too. ;> Excuse me, I have some CDs to listen to... +==========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| |Boonton, NJ USA finger info at: mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu| +==========================================================================+ |Excuse me Newt, but I don't recall being asked to sign on any dotted line!| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ From: Neile Graham Date: Thu, 16 Feb 1995 18:39:01 -0800 (PST) Subject: Innocence Mission "Bright as Yellow" I picked up the cd (single? ep? four songs, anyway). It's no fun anymore because most of the local shops only carry the stuff that's in the charts. And CD prices are much too high in Germany. There's only one shop (JPC) in town that nearly has everything in stock but they have fixed prices at 33,95 DM (17 US-$). When I tried to find the new Maire Brennan album, the clerk at another shop looked it up at his computer and told me: "Sorry, we won't get it in, but you could order it." I said "No, thanks." and bought it at JPC's, but I'm not willing to pay these outrageous prices any longer.
