I'm slowly trying to catch up after being about 700 e-mail messages behind. I don't know what happened, but you *are* appreciated here, and don't think otherwise. There is no "elite" and there is no such thing as one Ectophile who's better than another Ectophile. If you belong to this list, *you're* an Ectophile, and it doesn't matter if you've been here one day or 5 years, and it doesn't matter if you're the hugest Happy Rhodes fan on the planet, or if you've never heard a note she's sung. *I* care about everyone's posts, even if I can't respond personally. Eveyone here is important to me, and whatever anyone has to say is read (maybe not always immediately) and appreciated. Anyone who wants to feel at home here *should* feel at home...you, David Dalton, John Shepherd, Mitch, me...everybody. Welcome to Ecto, you, and all the other new (and recently de-lurked) folks. What Jeff wrote was *NOT* a flame. It might've been a little blunt, but that's the way Jeff is. It's also the way I am (one of my most popular utterances is "deal with it" to give you an idea). I don't remember ever seeing a flame on Ecto, come to think of it. The real problem is people who are afraid to come into a list thinking they aren't welcome (well, the real problem applied to this case, at least; the real problem is a culture clash). There is no "core" Ecto. Ecto has always been free for anyone to say what they wish. The person from AOL said something, Jeff corrected that person (still not sure about gender, so excuse the lack of pronouns), and that person ran away. I doubt that Ecto is the only place this is happening. With the floods of people coming into the Internet's already existing culture, this is bound to continue to happen. Newcomers should not take it as a snobbish "go away, brat"; if anything, either ignore it or listen to what the other person is saying. Because, quite frankly, everything Jeff said was true. > keep ecto happy.. I just saw in What's On Tonight (an on-line "TV Guide") that TLC (The Learning Channel) is airing a special about the Cocoanut Grove fire tonight at 6:30pm Central time. This might come as too late, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway. Unfortunately, our cable system doesn't carry The Learning Channel, so I won't be able to see it myself. When I was young I was horrified/fascinated (because of all the fire safety changes that were made as a direct result) with the tragedy. I had one of those Time-Life "Disaster" books, and that's how I found out about it. My condolences if the person who asked about the CG had relatives killed or injured in the fire. I'm embarrassed, and I want to apoligize for the "elite" remark in my last message - it should not have been directed at the entire list. I overreacted to the first response to my message because it was unfriendly and (I think) elitist. I know that this is not a true representation of ecto, but I was nervous about posting my first message because this whole scene is new to me and I was afraid of doing/saying something stupid - so I was overly sensitive. I also want to apoligize to the people who sent me direct messages who did not get personal messages in return. I did not read some of the first messages I got because I was still reactive and afraid of flames - I don't like feeling aggressive, and I do when I feel aggressed against. In any case, I regret this and I want to thank you. The messages I did read I responded to - these were positive and much more representative, I think, of the ecto mentality. Jann Arden. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Some time ago I found a promo sampler CD called 'Beyond Words', featuring two tracks each from six A&M singer/ songwriters, amongst others Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow and Jann Arden. I bought it because of Suzanne, but I was really impressed by Jann Arden. [BTW, I never really liked Sheryl Crow that much (and I still don't), but I do like one of her songs on 'Beyond Words'. It's called "Father Sun". It doesn't say much about that track except that it's written by Sheryl Crow and Jay Oliver, and dated 1991. Does anybody know if this is from an older album or something?] Anyway, about Jann. In the booklet it says: 'This Canadian singer/songwriter follows in the same footsteps as countrymen Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. With a sure sense of wordplay honed in countless bars and honky-tonks, Arden creates modern fables of love and redemption that will find a home anywhere in the world. The song "Time For Mercy" is the title track of her A&M debut.' The other track included by her is "Gasoline" (live), and in the discography one album is mentioned, "Time For Mercy". Now I liked those two songs very much, but when I found her album and had a quick listen to it in the shop it didn't do that much for me, so I didn't buy it. I also saw another CD by her - an older one, I think. Then I heard her on the 1194 Happy Gift Project (with Neil Young's "Birds" - thanks David!), and that track attracted my attention again. So now I would like to know a bit more about her. Does anybody know anything about her? What do you think of her music, how would you describe her CD('s) compared to those tracks that I've heard? Also, could somebody (David?) tell me something about that Neil Young tribute CD that "Birds" is taken from? Kerri Anderson. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Another singer that I would like some information about is Kerri Anderson. Marcel's raving about her CD "Labyrinth"; I'm not too sure about it yet - there are some good moments on it but mostly it's too much ordinary rock for me. According to Marcel I just have to listen to it more often... :) Anyway, he asked me if I could ask you about her. Could anybody tell me something about her? What are your opinions about her? Thanks! It looked pretty intriguing, and I thought there'd be a large enough sampling of ecto to appreciate it. It looks pretty intriguing, and since I don't have time at work to muck with whatever isn't immediately available to me on the net, I like the idea of a full blown magazine that comes wrapped in all the software necessary to view it. I'm looking forward to the first issue. (On a side note, way back at the Vancouver ectofest I saw my first Sandman and I've been hooked ever since. Last night I finished Black ORchid, and was totally blown away. I've got about 8 Sandman books, The Books of Magic (1st 4) and Black Orchid. Anyone have a full Neil Gaiman list, or a pointer on where to look for one, so I can fill in the holes? Neal (E-zine info follows, finally) Welcome to the world of: BLack LipStIck Have you ever wanted to read about Tori Amos, Sandman, Nine Inch Nails, Vampires, or perhaps just learn alittle bit about Tarot all in one??? well......it could happen. Really.......it could. Black Lipstick E-Zine is the newest E-Zine around and is distributed monthly at the low cost of NOTHING. Wow!!! what a deal. Heres the scoop: BLE (thats abbrevation for Black Lipstick E-Zine) is a new fan/gothic/strange/what other the F*** you wanna call it Electronic Zine. For those who have no idea what a E-Zine is check out the brief run down of an E-Zine, coming up. Issue #1 of BLE will be released next month (March). This will be a free piece of entertainment to anyone who wants it. That means if you obtain a copy of BLE you may give it to anyone. The Begining of BLE: You are probably wondering what the hell the point of this is, right??? Well I have always wanted to produce my own E-Zine, and since I procrastinate so much, I'm surprised I got this far. But BLE is gonna be a new E-Zine open to ANYONE, and it will have articales, pictures, sound, text, photos, and all kinda goodies. Now like most E-Zines this one has a certian world of media it focuses on. And that is the land of the unknown, the dreaming, and the bizarre. What you can find in BLE can be anything from a story on Trent Reznor to a short story written by an aspiring writer. The main point is, it will have a variety of stuff. When I came up with the idea for BLE, four big topics came into mind: Tori Amos because she is a goddess; Neil Gaiman's Sandman and all the rest of the gothic comic world; Other deep and fantastic musicians like Tori; and things of the behond, like vampires, spirits, tarot, wicca, dreams and so on. So if you can see you will not find Green Day, Mtv, or the latest trends wrapped in this zine. - - - Skip this part if you know what an E-Zine is - - - Okay for all the folks out there that have no idea what an E-zine is, heres the simplist way I could put it. An E-Zine stands for Electronic Magazine, now a regular mag that you might read, is printed and obtained at a news stand or magazine rack. Well an E-Zine is sent and recieved all through E-Mail. An E-Zine is much like a regular Magazine. Many provide Pictures and text to look at and read. Well BLE is going to provide a whole lot more (read further to find out who and what's featured in March #1 Issue) we would like to bring the best quality pictures, music clips, photos, stories, poetry, and so on availible to your computer. And its all done on the "Information Superhighway" How do you view BLE and what do I need to view it in?? Good Question, heres the answer - - - When you receive BLE it will be stuffed, but if you do not have a unstuffer have no fear, it is self-extracting. Now once you get it unstuffed your gonna wanna tear into it, right?? Well get this, BLE needs NO other programs but itself to be seen. This means you won't need a GIF viewer or a text editor to check this out, all you need is the E-Zine itself. So what you got here is a great self-extracting, self-running piece of entertainment. BUT....of course theres always a but to these things...You gotta have a Macintosh. Sorry all those fellow IBMers, we don't have the IBM software nor the hardware so we are unable to make a version now. But hopefully in the future we will get our hands on some IBM junk, and throw together a copy for the IBMers. Now even if you aren't on a Mac and you'd still like a copy, no problem, will send ya one if you want it, after all you can always run to your friends house or even Kinko's copy center and check it out. But I guarantee it's worth it. WHO and WHAT will be featured in March #1 issue??? Okay, March will mark the begining of BLE. We have a great line up of what to find in this next issue. x A great feature on Tori Amos, including a couple pictures, a sound clip and a good chunk to read. x Who's Neil Gaiman? and Who's Sandman? find out, as one of the best gothic/horror comic books comes to life in BLE. x Would you like to read some great fiction, horror, or supernatrual?? well believe me, there will be some great stories by newly marked writers. x Where's your life headed?? check out the horoscope. x Nine Inch Nails??? is it your thing?? check out a splash on one of americas most hidden bands. x Really Deep Thoughts?? some know what it is, and some don't. R.D.T the Tori Amos fan group, and you can find out more about them. x John Ney Rieber?? Like Neil Gaiman, hes one of the Gothic/horror writers of our time and he's making an approch. All this and much more coming at you in March..... Now comes the big question, would I like to receive this or not??? well we would love to hear from you. We are piecing together our mailing list now, and if you'd like to be on this list to receive BLE please write us. Please send all request, comments, ideas, or whatever to: BLEzine@ocis.com Please do not send REQUEST for the E-Zine to this address that sent you this info. I would have been furious had i learned of her shows after the fact. I've been hyping for over a year (as people are probably already sick of hearing about), and after I moved from San Diego to MD I figured it would be ages before I saw her again. (Oh, and welcome to ecto, I think we are still friendly.) I'm ecstatic that so many people have gotten to see Jewel and have all had positive experiences. It was funny reading Anja's report, because it highlights one of my few complaints about Jewel. I like her stories well enough, but she keeps telling them over and over again. Probably an unfair complaint, because they are quite amusing the first time or two, but given that I saw her 17 times last year (the number still makes me reel), and listened to my bootleg tapes many more times, I got pretty sick of them. Bud, I never asked Jewel about taping her shows. In California, someone came in and asked her if it was ok, and she gave reluctant approval. So she's not totally opposed to the idea. My impression is just that she felt a bit self-concious about it. Anyway, I never asked, and I feel no qualms about all the tapes I have. In fact, the copies Jeff Hanson made were edited into a tape for Neile, who gave a copy to Doug Burks, so if Doug wants, he can add it to the dubbing project and people can start bugging him for a copy. If I ever get the time, I'd like to turn all of my tapes into a talk-free set of songs, it's just a pain to wade through them all. Jeff did it, without trying to pick the best versions, but to make sure that most songs were represented. Her musical output is pretty incredible. I must have at least 60 different songs on tape, and word has it that she's playing at least 10 more that I've never heard. If I ever put them all together, I'll send a copy off to the dubbing project. Jeffy - in case that wasn't clear enough, I'm planning on going to both shows. I hope to bring a crowd down from up here, but my friends tend to be unreliable about venturing into DC on a weeknight (or weekend for that matter). She should be starting at about 8:00, and the place is about 5 blocks from the Dupont Circle Metro (Qst North exit, right after 3 blocks to 17th st - 1639 R st). Sure.. The album is called "Borrowed Tunes: A Tribute To Neil Young" and was released on Sony Music Canada last year. It consists of two discs: "Out of the Blue" (more acoustic) and "Into the Black" (more electric). All of the bands are Canadian, including: The Jeff Healey Band, Rose Chronicles, Cowboy Junkies, Blue Rodeo, 54-40, and a bunch of others I hadn't heard of before. Profits from the album are being donated to The Bridge School in San Francisco and the Safehaven Project for Community Living in Toronto. Both schools are special schools for children with severe physical impairments. Two of Neil Young's children have cerebral palsy. It's an excellent collection.
