I just noted in the local half-alternative-newspaper-rag thing (which is the best place to get concert dates; the other "real" newspapers seem to only think of telling us a week before the shows happen) that Tracy Chapman is going to be at Bogart's on the 15th of March. Long, long ago -- 1988 to be precise -- was when I got my first piece of audio equipment (a cassette walkman), and Tracy's eponymous release was the first tape I ever bought myself. I still have that tape, though the letters are rubbed mostly off of both sides and I have to guess which side is what. Still plays, though, and I still listen to it. Does she have a new album coming out? Coconuts didn't know anything about it, but, then again, they don't generally know anything about anything. If you went into that store and asked if they had a cd -- any cd -- they'd have to check with the manager. Wizard was closed when I called them; I figured they had the best chance of knowing. I cannot wait to check at the box office to see when tickets go on sale. (Even though the box office is a TicketMaster... sigh. At least there's no TM charge for Bogarts' own events -- ditto for the Taft, one of the other theaters in the area with a TicketMaster in the box office. Music Hall, though, always charges the service fee... they claim they lowered the ticket prices to reflect that, but you could've fooled me.) Again -- anyone have any info? While I can understand the reservations Happy and Kevin have, I am unable to stop myself from crying "no fair" anyway. The Prism broadcast is a public airing, is it not? What this amounts to is saying "anyone who gets Prism can see it, everyone else can't". That's hugely disappointing for people such as myself, out here in Australia with no chance of seeing Happy perorm live, and indeed never having heard or seen any of her live performances. Why do Happy and Kevin feel fine about audience-recorded cassette dubs of concerts being distributed, but not the Prism show? The mix may indeed be sub-standard, but I'll bet you a large amount of cash that it's still streets ahead of anything in the Tape Dubbing Project archives at the moment. I'm very disappointed while still acknowledging that it's not my moral right to have a copy; it's just this: if the mix is so bad as to be better not heard by Ectophiles, why is it going to air for the general public to hear? We may understand. Joe Public won't. I sincerely hope H&K reconsider their position on this; someone on Ecto making copies of the video for people's personal use is not the same as copies being offered for sale. Why? If you have something to say you should feel free to say it. This list has always been welcoming--I truly hope that doesn't change. There is no core group of friends, just people who have known each other on the list for longer than others. That does mean that those people may understand each other better, but it's no reason not to add your voice if you like the group--after all the people who have been here a while wouldn't know each other if they hadn't started to post. > OK, here's a song for someone to identify. Contains lyrics something like: > "Me I'm underneath my pillow, > me I'm trapped inside my brain..." > > "And I barely knew my name, my friends..." This is from Ferron's _Testimony_ album. The song is called "Misty Mountain" and it's a great song. The full lyrics are on the album if you want them. The album is old enough that I only have it on vinyl, though it is available on disc. It's an independent label, though, so you might have some trouble finding it. One of Ferron's ecto claims for fame is that Tori Amos sings backing vocals on a couple of songs on an album that followed, called _Phantom Center_. As for Happy, Vickie keeps that FAQ somewhere and can send it to you. If she doesn't let me know because I have a copy somewhere around her. If you like Sarah and Ferron and almost anyone you owe it to yourself to at least hear Happy. She's amazing. She's a great songwriter, and her voice and range are astonishing. Bob the base man ------------------------------ From: anja@jane.tiac.net (Anja) Date: Sun, 12 Feb 1995 22:58:57 -0500 (EST) Subject: Jewel Concert Report Mike "Milla-Man" Curry, Jeff "Jane_Fan" Wasilko, and I saw Jewel Kilcher tonight at the Kendall Cafe in Cambridge. The gushing by Neal Copperman and others is justified. She has a witty personality, great Ani-like stage presence, and her voice is sort of a folksy cross between Tracy Chapman (but a higher register), Sarah McLachlan, and Milla. The content of her songs deals with protection of innate naivete, but with a cynical twist that even Mike appreciated. Between songs she launched into several impromptu stories that were refreshingly honest and amusing. One discussed a situation she recalled from first grade, when she was in Miss Millinski's (sp?) class. She disliked math class, and so would wait until late in the day when math class came around to ask to go to the bathroom. She would walk as slowly as possible down the hall toward the bathroom, browsing the Food Group posters and principal announcements on the walls. One day she wore a beautiful turquoise Osh-Kosh B'Gosh jumpsuit (which was her favorite posession at the time, and she felt really cool in it). She came out of the stall after doing her business, horrified to find that a tiny corner of the sleeve had fallen into the toilet and gotten wet. She was more upset that this had not happened On Purpose than by the fact that it was the toilet into which it had fallen. It's Important, you recall, that Things you do in First Grade have to look like you did them On Purpose. So she went to the sink, washed out the sleeve corner, and then tried to "fade" the water up the sleeve so it would look more "cool" and On Purpose. Once this was accomplished, she noticed that the effect was lopsided, and so she then treated the other sleeve in the same fashion. Having both sleeves sprinkled up the arms just didn't complete the look adequately, so she then sprinkled little drops of water all over the jumpsuit so that it would make a sort of apaloosa effect. (these were basically her words). Satisfied, she then proceeded back down the hallway toward the classroom. She bolstered her confidence as well as she could, trying to look Cool as people turned their heads when she passed. Speeding up toward the door, she went in and made a beeline toward her seat, hoping that the teacher would be nice, and not comment. Unfortunately, halfway to her seat, her teacher snickered, and asked, "What happened to YOU?!" Mike took some notes during the concert. Here is a summary: Wearing a red Santa-Claus type coat, she brought a Holly Hobbie lunchbox on stage with her. When she started the concert, she was drinking a cup of tea, and commented that it was just regular Lipton Tea. Mike was already making snide remarks, and asked in an audible voice, whether she was endorsing this product? She laughed, and posed with the mug, and said, "Someday," and smiled. She was drinking from a gallon jug of Poland Spring water between songs, and later during the concert posed with it also, after having taken a swig. She introduced her song "Pieces of You" by explaining that it is about a girl she hates. She reflected for a moment, and then said, "You know, I bet this girl never thought I would put her into a song...or put this song on an album...or name this album after the song... heh heh heh. Revenge is Sweet." At the end she performed the "Yodelling Song" which her painter friend Midori requested. This was apparently the song she performed with her folksinging parents in clubs in Alaska starting when she was 6. Her parents were from Switzerland and moved to Alaska. Her father never learned to yodel in his native country, and so learned from John Wayne albums, instead. She learned from her father. There is a kissing noise in this song, and as a child she insisted her dad make the noise for her, since it was too embarassing for her to do. This song was really amazing. Personally, I think the yodelling put the Cranberries' throat-singing to shame. We bought self-bootlegged tapes from her ($5.00) which had the following songs on them: 1000 miles away She Cries Painters My Own Private God's Gift to Women She also gave us complimentary CDs called _Save_the_Linoleum_ which she cheerfully signed for us. They had the following songs: God's Gift to Women (non LP track) Intro I'm Sensitive (live version) Who Will Save Your Soul Race Car Driver Flower I'm Sensitive (LP version) Mike bought one of her T-shirts, also. This was a great show. The three of us agreed to meet back again next week to hear her again next Sunday in the same place. She will be performing in NYC on Tuesdays. If you have a chance, Go See Her. Tell her the Internet Geeks said "Hi." The show, amazingly enough, was FREE, and they even offered to validate parking for us.
