Good to know Jeff and I aren't just crazy raving about her for the last year. Anyway, I was hoping to get a bunch of people to the DC show, or any of the DC shows, but when I called Afterwords a little while ago, they said she cancelled for the rest of the month and had no further info. I'm bummed, but not overly surprised. My guess would be that she found out after the first show that a musician is given a nook in the corner, and is then ignored by everyone there, and wasn't happy about that. But then again, maybe it's something else entirely. So, if anyone is seeing any of her other shows, please ask if she is playing somewhere else in DC. I'd love to see her again, and will if I can find her around. Neal ------------------------------ From: Mike Mendelson Date: 07 Feb 95 12:50:19 EST Subject: best buy April 22, ay? They have managed to pick yet-another-impossible-weekend (tm) for me to do a show. Will I ever get to see her live? Will they ever escape the philly abyss (or should I say the N.E.?) I was in Best Buy yesterday and finally picked up the Glory of Gershwin. I also wanted to buy a copy of BtC but really did not think they'd have it. They didn't. But they did have Rhodesongs, EQP, and Ecto! That's pretty good for Best Buy. They were 11.99 each. I'm sure BtC is at Tower so I'll have to make my way down there. Also need to pick up the Jane videos. I went to see Barenaked Ladies last Sat. A group from Philly opened for them -- acoustic band with fiddle, guitar, drums -- slightly Oct. Projectish, a little Celtic, shades of Poi Dog. I forget their name but they said they'd be touring with I forget who in a month. Boy, that was really useful, ay? They were decent but Jules Shear had been slated to open and I was disappointed that he had cancelled. The Ladies were magnificent. Very high energy, incredibly funny and self-mocking. Sooooo canadian! They were way better than I thought they'd be. The show was sold out and tix were going for $50+ outside. That's pretty amazing. Anyways, they did all the shtick including - introducing band members as porn stars "Ron Jeremy on drums!" "On double-bass, Peter North!" "On keyboards, Randy West!" etc. - doing some rap songs -- e.g. snoop-doggy-dog -- this was absolutely hilarious - getting showered with kraft dinners during If I Had $1M the lead guy actually stuffed as much of the stuff (raw) in his mouth as he could and then proceeded to sing the rest of the song with it dribbling out in gobs ("he cooks it in there!") In all this was a very entertaining night -- *and* they are great musicians, esp. the bass player (amazing on both upright and electric), and the drummer. Plus they did all the harmony vocals (many 4-parters) very smoothly. The crowd was wild. Definitely check out the ladies if you get the chance. And the Brothers Kreegan (bass player and keyboardist) have an avant guard jazz cd for sale if you ask for it -- I bought it but haven't listened yet. Nanci Griffith / Sara Hickman is next week. And I might check out Syd Straw at the Coronet Feb. 14. BTW, I will be in Washington D.C. for a day, Thursday Feb. 9. I will have a little bit of time between about 4pm and 6:30pm, if any D.C.philes are in the neighborhood. I'm staying in Arlington at the Hyatt across from the USA Today building. Finally got around to checking out the new Tower in Rockville. (the strip center they're in got a massive facelift, and they've moved to another side of the center...) It's just *so* cool seeing BtC in the listening station. This was the first time I'd been in a Tower since the news was reported, and it just tickled me being able to don some 'phones and listen to her in-store. As a show of support, I bought another copy of the album (my step-mother's been wanting it for a while...). This Tower had the most HTR CD's I've ever seen in one place...about 25 copies of BtC, as well as a few copies of Ecto, RhodeSongs, Equipoise, and Warpaint. Don't recall seeing any of the 1st3. In all, between the bin by the listening station, the HTR section (properly filed under R), and the excess stock under the Rhodes bin, there were probably 35-40 CDs in stock. Too cool! Whilst there, I also picked up Arson Garden's _The Belle Stompe_, finally. Sounds like basic AG. On first listen, it seems better than Wisteria but still not quite as good as _Under Towers_. And speaking of _Under Towers_, I was *very* surprised to see a copy of it there! Apparently, back when AG were on Vertebrae (the label which released _Wisteria_ and the _Drink a Drink of Me_ (or is that you?) single), they re-issued _Under Towers_. Dunno if the CD sounds any different than the Comm3 release. In any event, if anybody's been looking for their first album, I know where there's a copy. ;-) Jeff (still bitter that when he bought his Nuns on Skates tape he didn't also buy the Arson Garden tape which was released at about the same time...those were two of the more popular bands in Bloomington when he was out there, and now he can't find his Nuns tape and well, nevermind) |Jeffrey C. I'm listening to my copy of the 1994 Happy Gift Project now -- kudos to The Management, a.k.a. Doug and Mitch for once again putting together a fine collection to send to Happy. I see that I have something to explain, though (and maybe someone can forward this to Happy, too :): Somewhere in transit the first half of my spoken introduction got toasted. Doug had warned me about this, but apparently he didn't see my plea to then remove the second half of the intro, because without the first half the second makes absolutely no sense (among other things, you don't know who the hell is talking, and you have an even dimmer idea of what the first selection was). So, for the sake of completeness and my own sanity, here is the deal with my first selection (even if nobody else out there cares :). It is called _Lux orientis in partibus_, which is Latin for "In the East a light is born". It appears on the Boston Camerata's outstanding album _A Medieval Christmas_ (newly released on CD, though I didn't get my copy in time for the contribution :P), and has been my favorite piece of seasonal music since I was, oh, 3. It has always affectionately been known to me and my family as "The Donkey Song", since it was usually sung at the end of the commoner's Mass on Christ- mas night, as a woman dressed as the Virgin Mary was led into the church and to the altar by a man dressed as Joseph, holding a baby (guess who), as she sat on a donkey. I believe it's from the 14th century. So there you go. Sorry the intro disappeared somewhere between Boonton and Seattle (I *swear* it was there before I mailed the tape, I listened to it before I sent it)... don't you all feel enlightened now? :) +==========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| |Boonton, NJ USA finger info at: mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu| +==========================================================================+ |Excuse me Newt, but I don't recall being asked to sign on any dotted line!| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ From: "The ONLY one..."
