They are incredibly pretentious, talentless wanna-be's, who's favorite color is probably orange. I saw them open for Joe Jackson (who was *awesome*), and I have not had such a repelling reaction to a musical act since the drunken dufus I saw open for Tori in Mpls 2 years ago. And I felt sorry for him. For the Murmurs, on the other hand, I felt nothing. Their big hit, "you suck," is reflexive. Unfortunately it fell through due to schedule conflicts. The episode will air sometime in the spring, but sadly with someone else in the role. In case you're wondering, the connection to Highlander (besides the fact that both feature exceptionally long-lived protagonists) is that the harpist episode was written by a friend of mine, who also works on Highlander: the series. - Larne ------------------------------ From: Richard Holmes Date: Wed, 1 Feb 95 09:08:48 -0800 Subject: Re: lisa germano #3 Meredith, You wrote about Lisa Germano's _On The Way Down From The Moon Palace_ album in a recent post -- I'm sorry I missed whether this is an older album (prior to "Geek the Girl" and "Happiness"), or something she's just come out with. If you are coming from out of town, we have room in our house for people to crash for the night. Here's the basic details: What: EctoGathering When: Saturday February 11th, 1995 Time: ~4:30 until whenever Where: Our house in Severn, MD (About halfway between Washington and Baltimore). Well, it's been about a week. Time to stop lurkin'! A few of you know me already from Fumbling-Towards-Ecstasy list. [signature won't leave VAX] I'm going through my UNIX account to keep from getting highly confused and sending responses to the wrong list, etc. That, and my UNIX account is bigger... :-) Less hassle extracting mail files! Well anyway, hi to meth, vicki, Dalton, any other FTEers here, and of course, all you regular ecto folk. And lurkers too. :-) Hmmm... I just don't see any cool threads going now. And I can't think of any offhand, which is not to say I won't in the future. :-) After all, it _was_ all that off-topic stuff on FTE that started the little mini-flamewar we had... if you can call anything that polite a flamewar! (No, I won't start another one here. I value my life, what little of one I have!) My CD collection has Van Halen and Mozart side by side, but mostly I listen somewhere in between: Sarah McLachlan and Yes are at the top of the list, with Paula Cole, Journey, Lone Justice, Milla, U2, Enya and several others going on down the list. About myself: I am obnoxious, arrogant, rambling, annoying, but damn it, people like me. :-) Seriously, I am as close to stream-of-consciousness as anyone online can be, and still use capitalization. :-) I write as I think, and that makes me easy to flame, but it also makes for fascinating reading. :-) Rather like Dalton! (well sorta) I don't have much of a life, so I am known to spend a surprising amount of time (and bandwidth) on here... if I get too rambly, let me know and I'll just go back to FTE. :-) Well, nuff fer now. And looks like I'll be doing .sigxcuses here, at least until I teach INDYUNIX all my old VAX tricks like signatures. :-) - -John [signature refuses to leave its home on VAX] ------------------------------ From: Alvin Brattli Date: Wed, 01 Feb 95 21:57:09 MET Subject: Birthday statistics Upon receiving the February 1st Ecto birthday list, I started wondering about the age distribution of Ecto subscribers. Pravatiner" Date: Wed, 1 Feb 95 17:12:35 EST Subject: The Barber Shop (or something like it) Chicago ectophile jazz fans may find it useful info for future reference, that Patricia Barber's usual performance venue is the Gold Star Sardine Bar, so called--interestingly but not surprisingly--because of its miniscule sitting capacity. It's in the 680 Lake Shore multipurpose building at Huron and the drive, which interestingly used to have the address "666" until the building management decided that that was scaring off potential tenants who believed in demonic posession (really). (I've often wondered if such people think the 333 Wacker Drive office building, itself a significant piece of architecture in this town, is only half possessed :-). ) The Gold Star is, for what it's worth, one of the city's leading jazz clubs. Like Meredith, I too have gone magazine shopping in the last few days. My own swag includes the latest _Spin_, with the cover story on Courtney Love, and the latest _Us_, with the cover story on Helen Hunt and the interior story on Kennedy. I have no cable, so my only experience with the latter has been her appearance on Greg Kinnear some time ago, in which she came across as being quite weird, but she's apparently an acquired distaste, since I didn't see enough of her to be permanently turned off. I did, however, read in _TV Guide_ that on the MTV awards show she engaged in a rather gross and disgusting bit of business with Puck, whom I was surprised still had any connection with the network, and whom Kennedy cannot help but be considered considerably less gross and disgusting than under normal circumstances. But my bottom line in bringing all this up is that we perhaps should be of good cheer: if Kennedy's vaunted Republicanism is more than a shtick, maybe she's just what is necessary to finally run the Sons of Newt into the ground :-). Wow. Sarah *can* do a great cover, can't she? Now I'm waiting for her take on XTC's "Dear God", which will be, at the very least, erm... Interesting. :) I did discover this evening just why the Danielle Brisebois CD I found used for $4.99 was in the bin in the first place. Not my cup of tea for sure, but if your tastes lean toward the Top-40 when you're not looking, this might be up your alley. If anybody wants to take it off my hands, you can have it for what I paid for it -- $4.99. I think the "USED" sticker is still on it. :) FYI, I hear that the American version of Sarah's "Hold On" video is only slightly different from the Canadian, but the mix and editing are different. If you, like me, were wondering if it would be worthwhile to tape Alternative Nation for the next week or so to catch it, then I guess the answer is Maybem depending on how obsessive you are.
