I apologize if this appears twice. ***************************** Hi... I want to thank the people who recommended Sara Craig on this list a while back, while I was still receiving fairly consistent ecto digests. I got two more on Tuesday and Wednesday, but that's it... so if you want to respond to this post, please e-mail me personally. ANYWAY, I just saw Sara at the campus Engineering Pub (Clark Hall) and she was absolutely stunning. What an incredible voice, what an incredible performer. She displayed a lot of ease on stage, her gestures were sweeping and hypnotic but natural; they did not at all seem contrived. I was also impressed by her band. The bassist played a 6-string bass for many numbers which I don't recall ever seeing before. (I suppose I probably have and was just too dense to notice.) And the guitarist... the dexterity of his fingers, the power, the confidence... fantastic! I bought a CD from her after the show and she signed it for me. She was very friendly and down-to-earth, and seemed quite happy to be talking to her fans. So a big *thanks* to all those who recommended her, and having seen her, I can heartily pass the recommendation on. I can't comment on her CD, as my copy has yet to see the inside of a CD player, but her live performance tonight was nothing short of phenomenal. - ----------------------- By the way, does anyone know anything by a Toronto-based group called Lost and Profound? If so, please e-mail me. I've heard one song on a compilation CD and was blown away. - ----------------------- My token Happy note, aimed at Southern Ontario ectophiles: I picked up BtC at the CD Bar in Toronto last month, so try there if you're not having any luck finding it! I was at my local Tower Records and went to check out the CD listening stations. For those of you without a nearby Tower, they've set up stations at most Tower locations with 12 featured CDs each, allowing people to listen before they buy. And on one of these was BtC! I managed to keep myself from making a major scene in public (:-)), but did take the time to copy the blurb on the station. Text is no doubt copywrited by someone whose name I forgot to take in my rush; all typos are mine. - --- Happy Rhodes - Building The Colossus Happy Rhodes' eighth album, _Building The Colossus_, showcases her richly textured, dark melodies and vocals that range from light and angelic to deep and weighty. Her four-and-a-half octave range is put to good use on the album's single, "Collective Heart". _Rolling Stone_ dubbed her "Enya by way of Eno." - --- They had (as usual) a special bin of the album next to the station; it looked like at least one copy had gone since last time the filled it, and maybe more. If Susanne managed to get her placed, pass a well deserved "Well Done!" her way. This has the potential to introduce a *lot* of people to her music. Do listening stations work? I'll be proof they do. While I was rejoicing over Happy, my eye was caught by another disc on that station that I ended up getting. Based on my time at the station plus what I've heard since (I'm listening for the first time while typing), I'd recommend Holly Cole fans to check this out (Vickie, take note). It's by Patricia Barber, called Cafe' Blue, and according to the blurb sticker on the front it was selected to "Best Of" jazz lists by: New City, the Village Voice, and (#1) the Chicago Sun-Times. Less standards and more originals, jazz with a bit of classical minimalism added - it's a keeper. And while I'm at it, keep the suggestions coming. Recently, this list has introduced me to Arson Garden, Miranda Sex Garden, Boiled In Lead, Loreena McKennitt, Holly Cole, and too many others for me to keep track of in the last year and a half (half of my collection, it seems). I wonder who decides what goes into the listening stations. After finally noticing BtC at the local Tower (San Mateo, CA), I suggested that they put it in one of the listening stations, but the clerk said they got a weekly memo with exactly what to put where, and BtC wasn't (yet) on the list. The special effects are great as is the duel choreography. Is this why I decided to bother you? Well, not exactly, but could you blame me if I did? No,, the real reason I decided to post is that during a scene shot in Glasgow, the most beautiful music was being played. I decided to wait out the lengthy credits to find out who the musician was. It was our own beloved ecto-goddess Loreena McKennit fillingb out the musical role. In fact, she's got three songs listed on the soundtrack. I don't know their names. I have a really poor short term memory, except for numbers. As well as Loreena making an appearance on the soundtrack, the Cocteau Twins have a song on it as well. Again the song title eludes me. It may be worth checking out. I will soon be doing so. As soon as I do, if somebody doesn't beat me to the punch, I'll post the specifics. Until then... The albums featured on listening posts are usually listed in PULSE!, and occasionally reviewed there during their run at the posts. Being Tower-less in Providence, I would be curious to see if the latest PULSE! has a feature/mention on Happy. (hell, I may drive up to Cambridge just to find out. :)). Chandra wondered about the new Tori trax from the _Higher Learning_ soundtrack. woj and I just found that disc for a reasonable price today (the Sam Goody in the Rockaway, NJ mall had it for $12.99 on sale, dunno if that's a chain-w wide thing or not, but you might want to check -- it's been $17.99 everywhere else, gack!), and I must say that while they're good, they're really not worth buying the whole disc for unless you find it for a *really* good price. The soundtrack also features new songs by Eve's Plum and Liz Phair, and the rest is just rap sh*t (sorry, but I really can't stand that genre). Tori's cover of "Losing My Religion" is a vintage Tori cover, i.e. she takes the song and makes it her own, so that it's utterly unrecognizable as the creation of someone else. "Butterflies" will require many more listenings, but on first glance it's quite good, your basic Tori b-side worthy of inclusion on any "real" recording. Besides her piano there is also reportedly a flugel- horn and electric guitar on the track -- the guitar is noticeable at the very end of the song, but I couldn't detect a flugelhorn anywhere -- I'll definitely be listening to this one again! Being the insane Tori completists we are (we also found two Australian "Pretty Good Year" CD singles mixed in with the regular CD singles, which blew our minds so much we naturally bought one :) we bought the soundtrack, but unless you're as nuts as we are I'd advise looking in used/cutout bins or taping the songs from someone to enjoy until you find the disc for under $5 somewhere. +==========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| |Boonton, NJ USA finger info at: mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu| +==========================================================================+ |Excuse me Newt, but I don't recall being asked to sign on any dotted line!| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ From: Robert Lovejoy Date: Sun, 29 Jan 1995 21:44:28 -0500 Subject: Stupor Bowl Yep, I saw some of it all right. First thing Vic mentioned was that she was saddened by a phone call she just received of a friends upcoming divorce, she is friends w/both and knows what its like. Victoria and Andrew tried to stay up all night because they were heading to Europe and wanted to adjust to the time change but couldn't do it. I spoke to Vic about Mary Margaret's album (which she said she loves and it is one of her favorites).
