All Ectophiles (and their guests of course :) ) are welcome and we do have room if people are coming from out of town and need a place to stay the night. We'll have plenty of good music and videos and maybe even the fuzzy blue punch that's been made at other gatherings. :) If you are interested in coming, please let me know so we can have an idea of how many people to expect and so I can send you directions. :) Also be sure to tell me if you want to crash at our house so we can plan for that. I myself have been getting dumped on from great heights lately. Monday, the mailer on the Carolina Toasternet was down due to a glitch in the gnodes. Tuesday, I didn't even bother logging on; to make a long story longer, I had to dicker with the public library bureaucracy over fines for books I'd returned two days before they were due, and had to get a tape uncurled from around the capstan of my walkman (no damage, luckily). Today, there were 310 emails in my reader at the peak, and twice either the system or telnet crashed, forcing me to be very patient as I tried to get back on for the umpteenth time. Finally, believe it or not, I got through them all. I really thought I had problems, IMHO WIVH (my contribution to the smoe debate kindled by Vickie :-) ), until I read a post on wnn form someone who said he had over 3000 pieces of mail piled up on his account. Nothing like that to give you a sense of proportions :-). Monday I managed to stay awake for both Letterman and Conan, and I caught both Liz Phair and Bettie Serveert. I kept switching between LP's set and John Wayne in _Jet Pilot_, one of the wierder films I've seen in a while, and it was an interesting counterpoint between the soothing unplugged rendition of "Whip Smart" and the semi-martial music over the movie's opening titles. Somehow, Bettie Serveert's number wasn't as memorable. WRT Weill: Do not forget the extent to which "Lay Me Down" and "Words Weren't Made for Cowards" mirror his musical style. Also remember that Happy's tendencies in wordsmithery, to some extent, mirror those of Weill's collaborator, Brecht (or at least his ghostwriters). I wrote the message below already in December, but the digests weren't working then, so I held it back until now. Hi Greg, it's so nice to see you're back and a good job you did too! We missed your footah ;). Last night we saw the Cranberries. Bit too smooth, people didn't respond quite as enthusiastic as you would think, unpleasant venue, light show quite overdone (too much of everything, too many lights, far too many colours, too much movement) but the music and especially Dolores of course were great! Weird clothes, something like a cross between a mini dress and a swimsuit out of tiger skin (fake? I hope!). They had a local support band, bit raw and unexperienced but the girl had a great voice! Promising. Unbelievably stupid name though: "Swaggering Canes". Tschuess, Claudia (from Claudia&Klaus) - ----------- Somewhat delayed message follows ---------------------------------- Hello Ecto! It's me and not Klaus for a change. He's so busy I agreed to write a Rainbirds Concert Report (okay, so I am very busy too, but he's going to Ireland on business on top of it all). The Rainbirds played the TINGELTANGEL in Koeln on Sunday, Dec 11th 1994. It must have been a very short notice tour, we only saw a tiny info by chance in a rather obscure music magazine. If it hadn't had Dead Can Dance on the cover, I wouldn't have bought it at all. So we were lucky! When we tried to get tickets in advance we were told the place was too small for this kind of thing. The ticket we got at the entrance said this was the 5th of five places they played. The tickets looked sort of "home made", a xerox-on-yellow-cardboard affair ;). Besides RAINBIRDS and the tour dates and the names of the band memebrs it said THREE BIRDS OF A FEATHER ON We were there not exactly early but well in time and we were lucky it was an unusually warm and dry night, because they made us wait in front of the door for about an hour. The concert was supposed to begin at 8:00 PM with the doors opening at 7:00, but they didn't let anyone in til 8:15. They finally began at 8:30 and were done by ca. 10:15. TINGELTANGEL is an old fashioned word for a cheap saloon type joint, a bit like honky tonk I think, and the decoration was accordingly: Very little light and chandeliers and red plush. :-P The place was almost crammed with perhaps 80 people (at most). We got a seat at the side relatively far back, which, given the size, means perhaps 5-7 m from the stage and a perfect, unobscured view. 8-) The stage was small, but relatively deep, a large keyboard and a grand piano on the left (Ulrike had to climb over things to get to her place there), a drum set on the right and some space left for Katharina and a microphone stand in the middle. It was just the three of them, Ulrike Haage, Tim Lorenz and Katharina Franck, Katharina sometimes playing an acoustic guitar, sometimes an electric guitar and sometimes just singing (screaming, whispering, speaking, howling etc, amazing range of expressions!). No light show, just some fixed lights, mostly red or white. Red matched the place :) They started with some eerie sounds and in the dark Katharina came on and whispered strange things into the microphone and then the light came on and they launched into a song full force not giving us any time for applause. They got it fully after this one :) The drummer was in black, Ulrike in black pants and vest with a long white shirt, while Katharina wore a very elegant black suit with a black silk high collared jumper (don't know what this type of jersey shirt's called) underneath. Very elegantly cut and expensive looking "messed up" hair cut. And jumped around in this like they were aerobic clothes :) She announced they'd do a few off the last two albums and some new ones. What they did in fact was almost only new ones! And they were so great, I can hardly wait for the next album! They got loads and loads of VERY enthusiastic applause. My hands were positively swollen and tingling afterwards.:) Ulrike had a solo and Ulrike and the drummer had a solo together too. Very avantgarde style. One portugese song was just Katharina and the drummer, who was absolutely excellent! I didn't understand a word but it was very passionate, a bit like an argument between voice and drums, very accurately accentuated. You could see the effects their working for theater had on them, the gestures, the spoken poetry or prose parts (always mixed with, underlined by, or responded to by music) the whole dramatic build up in each song and across the whole concert. If you've listened to the albums you know what a great voice she has, and sometimes people who sound good on albums don't do live, but hers was even more unbelievable. And so much power and dynamics! People screamed for encores! We got three, each consisting of 2-3 songs. Here they did mostly the album stuff, including Call me easy ... They didn't leave a single known song unchanged, added bits, changed the feeling somewhat. The last encore was Jamais, jamais, the current single. At the end of the main part, someone gave Katharina two long red roses, she passed one on to Ulrike and placed hers on the rim of the keyboard. When they came back for the second (or third?) encore, she took her rose across between her teeth (tango style) and danced around a bit and when the sound built up she suddenly took it out, jumped up and smashed it violently into the drum set and while it was raining red blossom leaves around her in the same breath grabbed the mike and started into a very loud rock'n'roll type song. Wow! A last comment on the sound, it was full and very well engineered and absolutely great. A very few things Ulrike seemed to call from programs or tapes. So Happy shouldn't worry about going on tour with just Kevin and maybe a drummer, I didn't miss a thing in the sound. To my regret they did not play Devils Dance... oh well, you can't have everything. I must say I am still almost bouncing, because it was such a very good one! Envy us !!! ;) Claudia - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spix@wsas01.site.uni-wuppertal.de ! "Women don't do it with guns!" Just found and downloaded DepthGauge V 2.5.4 which seems to date from around 1991. Although your readme indicates that this is the last release, I was wondering if that situation had changed and there might be a more recent version. Wait... let's back up a bit... DepthGauge kinda sorta works for me. I'm running on a Performa 600 CD using the 68030 processor with SoftFPU for an FPU processor. I've got 12 MB RAM and am operating under system 7.5. That's the good news. The bad news is that DepthGauge will switch my monitor depth, but only at the cost of freezing the Finder; I have to quit the Finder in order for it to take effect. The net effect is that (obviously) it is really more effective (if more cumbersome) to use the Monitors control panel. I would like to be able to use DepthGauge the way it was designed to be used. Is my problem that I don't have Color QuickDraw? Why do I need it? Can I replace it with something equivalent? Is there a new rev which does not require some ancillary application? How can we make this a better world to live in? Is there a cure for stupidity? But on to more important things... If you will solve my DepthGauge problem, I will promise to buy (at least) one Happy Rhodes CD. Shoot, I'll probably buy one anyhow. Your description and plaintive explanation of why you are supporting Happy is intriguing enough to make me want to give it a shot. I find it hard to believe that so many people stiffed you for a crummy buck! Most of my fellow Mac-ers are pretty good about shareware fees for utilities that they use. But people come in all kinds of strange shapes and flavors. I am going to e-mail this to you at your aol account with a cc for ecto at rutgers. When I read Uwe's post to the list explaining his position, I found it frightening to have such insight into a tormented mind (soul). You could clearly see his twisted rationalization and paranoid delusions. I have to admit that I muttered something along the lines of "...waste of space..." to myself. (please don't flame me, I'm disgusted with myself for it) Anyway, several people have made comments like "I wish I had tried to help him", "I wish I hadn't flamed him". C'mon - it's a common conceit amongst humans that *THEY* are the only ones who could have saved someone - if only *THEY* had reached out. I doubt that comments, negative or positive, would have changed Uwe's course of action. Also, many people on the list have commented that they "understand Uwe... Know how he feels". That's almost as disturbing as Uwe saying he *knew* how Sarah felt. I guess what I am trying to say is... don't waste your time lamenting Uwe's situation. We probably couldn't have done anything about it before and certainly can't do anything about it now. Instead, look to your own friends, families, selves. Give any and all the support you can - and don't wait for a crisis to offer it. Let them know there is someone who will listen and not judge them on what they have to say, in good times and bad. It's easy to blow a suicide off as a cowardly, pathetic act, but some people don't realize how easy that long, dark slide into the pit can be. HAPPY BIRTHDAYS to all!! You know, mental hugs come your way when Mike M sends the birthday list through. Don't ever doubt it. This is kinda late, but THANKS AGAIN to Doug and Mitch for all their wonderful work on the bi-annual Happy Gift/Birthday Projects. You guys are *great!!!* I know there are Betty fans here (hi Jeffy!) so I thought I'd pass this along, because I can't remember if it's been posted here before. There's a show on HBO at 7:30am (Central time) called "Encyclopedia" and Betty are (not bad grammer, that's the name of the group) regular participants. I found this out because I set the timer to tape the film "Groundhog Day" (wonderful film!) last week, and then went to check to see how it came out. I had accidentally gotten the ending credits of the show right before it, which was "Encyclopedia" and was suprised to see the name Hal Willner as I was fast-forwarding it. Woah! I stopped and rewound it, and read carefully. Hal Willner was credited as the Music Producer . Now, I don't have a full biography of Hal Willner handy, but he's the guy who put together the Kurt Weill tribute album "Lost In The Stars" that I talked about the other day, and was the Music Director for the Weill PBS show the other night. He's also put together tribute cover albums for Nino Rota, Thelonious Monk, and the music of Disney (which I'm too lazy to go get right now to see the title, but it has Yma Sumac and Sinead O'Connor on it). ANYway, I thought that was pretty cool, but then as the credits kept rolling, I saw the name Betty, and went "whoa!" again, and rewound. Yep, it was Alyson Palmer, Amy Ziff, and Bitzi Ziff. Them's Betty all right! (bad grammer on purpose). So, not knowing if it was a one-time thing, I checked the TV Guide (Chris's mom got us a subscrip- tion for Christmas....now I've become a total TV slut, pah!) and it's listed as being on every day, 7 days a week. Don't know if it's a limited series, don't know anything about it, but I taped it this morning (it came on right before Anamaniacs, me too Jeffy!) and there was Betty again, so they're definitely regulars. They sing the opening and closing theme, and then in the middle of the show they sang a song about the word of the day, "echo" which is close enough to ecto that I just had to tell you all right away. So, um, Betty fans with HBO should check it out. It's not a new series, which is why I'm wondering if it's already been mentioned and my poor memory is blanking out on it. It's from 1988, as a matter of fact. Michael, _One From The Heart_ is one of our all-time favorite films! Definitely in our Top 10. It's hard to find anyone who's even heard of it, let alone who likes it too. If people have heard of it, it's generally because it was the film that bankrupted Zoetrope Films, and so it's always gotten a bad rap. We love it! I definitely think that when it came out it was (technically) way ahead of its time, and most people just didn't get it. It's actually a very sweet love story, but the "props" and directing style seemed to confuse people. I remember when it first came out, and I read a review in the Los Angels Times, which was absolutely *scathing*, hateful. It an was extremely long review too, and the reviewer picked it apart bit by bit. Well, it put me off the film, 'cause I thought it had to be truly horrifically terrible. Then, years later, after I meet Chris and we get into the big screen projection thing, we rented it because we both liked Coppola and wanted to catch up with the films we hadn't seen. We were astounded at how much we loved it! Even as I'm saying this, I can't really recommend the film. Not if it's watched the way most people watch movies. That is, on a 13", 19" or even 25" TV, with all the lights on and the phone ringing and things going on to distract you. It really has to be *experienced* and to do that, it must be breathed in, it must envelop you. If you must see it, then come to Chicago when we get another big screen projector (one of these days) and watch it with us :-). Or, at least, watch it on the biggest screen possible, and turn off the phone and the lights, and just flow with it. Don't analyse it, don't interrupt it, and don't let yourself get confused. It really is, as Michael can attest, a film that gets better and better every time you see it. Throwaway lines pop out, you get to know the characters better, camera tricks will become more than camera tricks, you'll see them as very important to what's going on in the story, and more lyrics will become clear. Michael's right, the music is *great* and you'd never expect the duets between Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle to be so amazingly perfect. It goes beyond that though, because the music was written for the film, and all the lyrics go perfectly with what's happening on the screen. Coppola, Waits/Gayle, Frederic Forrest, Teri Garr, Harry Dean Stanton, Raul Julia (RIP), Nastassia Kinski and Lainie Kazan, Cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, Production Design by Dean Tavoularis, screenplay by Armyan Bernstein....what MORE could you want? It's brilliant! Thanks for mentioning it Michael. If *nothing* else, I HIGHLY recommend the soundtrack. It's one of our favorites. Geez, I've become such a TV slut since we started getting the TV Guide. I haven't been this into TV for years. The main reason is that since our living room is in shambles, Chris set up the VCRs by my computer in the dining room. I can't dub tapes at the moment, but I can tape 2 things at once, and to make it even worse, we're for some reason getting feeds of HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, The Movie Channel and Encore. We didn't order them, and we didn't hook in illegally, they just showed up one day. We're not complaining. I'm not, 'cause I'm a movie buff, and I've been taping movies like crazy before someone realizes that we're not supposed to be getting them and they're shut off. And we can now get the Discovery Channel again! Oh, I'm so pleased! When we lived in Kansas City, I got hooked on Beyond 2000, and the Discovery Channel in general, and I missed it. They're back, and it's nice. You Ozzies have one of the best shows in the world with Beyond 2000. Thanks!! Besides movies, the only things I'm taping regularly are Animaniacs, Absolutely Fabulous, Due South, Voyager (I've finally decided that I wanted to get in on a Star Trek series from the very beginning, so I did, and I like it) and of course, skating. Lots and lots and lots of skating. Most of it is ho-hum, but every now and then...once in a blue moon, something comes along to make me jump up and down and be gleeful. Such as, Oksana Baiul skating to *Enigma* and Katarina Witt skating to Peter Gabriel's "Summertime" from the Glory of Gershwin. Nice! Ramble ramble ramble blah blah blah :-). Hey, now that My So-Called Life is off the air (temporarily, I guess) all you MSCL fans can check out Due South now. There's a mailing list, and the Story Coordinator is on the list, so I've already put in requests for Jane Siberry and Mary Margaret O'Hara for future episodes. Since the people involved are interested in Canadian female singers, and since the music of Sarah McLachlan, Loreena McKennitt, Holly Cole and Figgy Duff have already appeared in the show, I have high hopes for Jane and MMO to show up at some point. Thursdays at 7:00pm (Central) on CBS. Don't miss it! Something...something...can't remember. Oh well, later. Bye! (or, Why I'm Pissed Off At PBS) !! Of course, as I hit "send" I realize what it was that I was going to say. We watched the PBS Kurt Weill show last Wednesday and although I loved it, I was disappointed that Mary Margaret O'Hara wasn't in it after all. Well, yesterday, we found out what happened. Our friend Charley called up Mary Margaret to see what happened, and she wasn't home so he left a message on her answering machine. Last night she called Charley and left a message on his answering machine because he wasn't home. Charley reports that MMO said that she *was* in the original movie, but that PBS cut her out because she was "too weird" and that American audiences probably wouldn't understand her. ARRRGH!! Now I'm really mad at PBS, knowing that they cut her out on purpose, and that she was the *only* artist they cut out. MMO failed to say what song she performed, but Charley's going to find out. She did say that "they" (presumably meaning Hal Willner) chose the song she did. If any of our esteemed Canadian Ectophile friends see that "September Songs" has been released on video up there, please pass info along. If you see one in the store, check out the package for a list of names. If Mary Margaret O'Hara is on there, we'd want to know, and would buy it just for her, even though we taped the rest of the show off PBS. I'll be happy to write a letter to PBS and tell them that we preferred to spend X amount of money on an import video that *might* have gone to PBS during the next begging time. Cut out one of my all-time favorite artists because she's too weird, huh? Pooh on you! Tidbit: MMO's album "Miss America" (what? You don't have it? SHAME SHAME) was recorded in 1984, but the record company didn't know what to do with it, and it sat on the shelf for 4 years before Virgin decided to release it. Then of course, she's dropped because she's, uh, too weird. Poor Mary Margaret. She's a wealth of talent and she gets all this flak for being too bizarre. Sadsadsad. Thanks to our new TV Guide subscription, I finally found out the name of, and was able to tape, this little Canadian movie that's been playing on HBO. I saw the last half of it early in the morning a few months ago and didn't know the name of it. It's called "Rookies" and it's about hockey guys, and it features the music of Mary Margaret O'Hara, Cowboy Junkies and Blue Rodeo. It's not a great movie, but hey...how often would I get a chance to hear MMO in a film? Canadians??? Can anyone tell me about a film called "Harmony Cats"? It's playing on The Movie Channel and HBO this week and next week, and I'm wondering if I should check it out. She displayed a lot of ease on stage, her gestures were sweeping and hypnotic but natural; they did not at all seem contrived. I was also impressed by her band. The bassist played a 6-string bass for many numbers which I don't recall ever seeing before. (I suppose I probably have and was just too dense to notice.) And the guitarist... the dexterity of his fingers, the power, the confidence... fantastic! I bought a CD from her after the show and she signed it for me. I can't comment on her CD, as my copy has yet to see the inside of a CD player, but her live performance tonight was nothing short of phenomenal. - ----------------------- By the way, does anyone know anything by a Toronto-based group called Lost and Profound? If so, please e-mail me. I've heard one song on a compilation CD and was blown away. - ----------------------- My token Happy note, aimed at Southern Ontario ectophiles: I picked up BtC at the CD Bar in Toronto last month, so try there if you're not having any luck finding it!
