That's because the CD is meant to *never* be stored away, and because you always have to have the CD in the CD player. :) That way you will never be annoyed by it! Nobody has commented on the new AG logo. Is that a Happy creation? If so, then we have some new Happy art to talk about! If Vickie or Bob talk to the source, I would really like to know what inspired the album cover. My only reasoning for it is the frequent mention of the word 'facade' in the album, which could justify Happy's paint job. This is the only thing I can come up with. Is there anyone in contact with AG (Bob, Vickie, anyone ...?) who could tell me whether I'm just being fobbed off, or does it sound like there's simply a delay involved with this shop knowing about its release and are simply telling me this because they haven't heard about it yet ... ? I am having a similar problem. My record store even went as far as to explain to me that all of the folks on the net who have their copy of BtC already must have gotten pre-released versions, and that some record stores break the rules and sell them before they should (what? like the record store is supposed to hold onto CDs once they get them till a certain date??). Yes, that's precisely it. Record stores *are* supposed to hold onto CDs until the published 'street date' before selling an album. That's why stores will often have midnight sales for popular albums, where they'll start selling something at 12:01am on the street date. That's how I was able to get _The Red Shoes_ "early." Street dates in the US are traditionally tuesday. I have no idea why this is. Record stores that have received a shipment before others have an inherent advantage on something that's going to sell awfully well. I've never been clear as to whether this is an actual legal matter or something that's policed by the music industry, but I have heard about busts on stores that sell early.... As we've been hearing for at least a month, the street date on _Building the Colossus_ is today, the 31st. I was amazed to hear about stores already carrying it a week or two ago, particularly since it took so long for my pre-order to catch up! (I received both my _Warpaint_ and my _Equipoise_ before their official release dates). When I saw that it was found at a Tower in NJ I dropped everything and headed straight out the door for my nearest Tower (in Rockville, MD). Well, they didn't have it! Talk about disappointment! Anyway, they'd better have this Saturday or I'll ... I'll ... I'll ... _really_ be disappointed! Anyway, I did pick up 3 other CD's of Ecto interest. Milla's The Divine Comedy, and CDs by Everything but the Girl and Single Gun Theory. Milla you know about, I like it, and it is an impressive debut album (on Conan she said she was 15 1/2 when she wrote them!) - we'll see how I like after more plays. Everything but the Girl is fairly lightweight pop and the lead singer has a good voice but I'm not sure it's going to wear well. Single Gun Theory (they're going to be the lead-in group for Sarah McL when I see her) are a change from most Ecto-fare as their music is pretty much Dance Pop - the lead singer is female and has a good voice, though. Each song begins with a sound sample from some non-musical source, a speech, a movie, whatever ... it's different, anyway. And I'm listening to a CD right now on loan from a friend that should be major Ecto-fodder: Shawn Colvin's "Steady On". Her voice is remarkable suggestive of Sarah McL, Milla, Tori, and Kate at times (She doesn't "sound like" them - she just sometimes reminds me of them :-) The accompaniment is acoustic including bass and drums and is a little pop-oriented but not objectionably so. (Isn't that a nice birthday present?) Thanks for all the wonderful letters of support for my writing that letter. You are truly amazing! BTC just keeps getting better and better! It takes lots of listenings and much getting-used to. I'm still not ready to even think of doing a track-by-track evaluation, but I do know that I love all the songs, and I definitely love "Just Like Tivoli" (not quite as much as "Temporary And Eternal" though, which is one of my favorite songs on Equipoise) and I don't think it's new agey in any sense of the word. It's a typically beautiful Happy ballad. I already know that my *favorite* song on BTC is "Glory" and I think it's entirely too short. There should be a 20 minute extended version! I don't like the cover either (much) but I'm sure there's more to it than meets the eye, just like the Equipoise cover. I just haven't figured it out yet. There's a *lot* still to be figured out. Over The Rhine's _Eve_ is *wonderful* but it's very, very different from _Patience_. It's so different that you really need to forget about it entirely, or there's a possibility that you'll be disappointed in Eve. Now they sound less like The Innocence Mission and more like Texas gone funky. It's not "ethereal" at all, but every song is strong and good. There's not a track I dislike. Highly, highly recommended! Eddi Reader's new album is growing on me quite a bit too. The credits are *chock full* of familiar Ecto names, and soon I will type in the album credits for your perusal. It's a new title written by Clive Barker (!) called: ECTO-KID!!! The titles were even in fuzzy blue on the cover. I think it's about some kid who gets murdered along with his father and sticks around as a ghost to avenge the slayings. I seriously considered getting it, but it was $2.95. On the other hand, it is an ecto artifact, it was issue #1, and I get a discount at that store... I think I'll go back tomorrow. I'll let you all know how the story is, though I must say I don't have very high hopes because it's a Marvel title. I also saw a license plate the other day: ECTO 2. Damn, that means ECTO is already taken in NJ. :( Back to comics -- those with interest in such things should NOT miss the new Vertigo title The Books Of Magic, which continues the story of Timothy Hunter from the Neil Gaiman graphic novel of the same name. Neil is consultant for the series, and so far it's brilliant. They're up to issue #5 now and are about to embark on their second storyline. Got the two available (one only on tape, alas) Veda Hille collections, woj. You're right, she's marvellous. The stuff of obsession. More about all of these when I don't have a huge project hanging over my head. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu P.S. to woj--only get the Kashtin if you like Gypsy Kings type music. P.P.S. Apparently _The Line, The Cross and the Curve_ is playing at the Varsity Theatre in Seattle at the end of this month--cause for another ecto-gathering? I think it's playing Sept. 31 and Oct. 1. We'll have to go Sept. 31 because we have to decide between Sarah and Robyn Hitchcock for Oct. 1. ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 1 Sep 1994 01:10:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael K Curry Subject: Milla tour dates (w/ CTD) Hi all, Thanks to one of my amazing list subscribers for getting me this list of dates for the upcoming Crash Test Dummies shows that Milla will be opening!
