I must admit I never realized quite how out of touch I was with music and/or the world at large until I got on ecto. :) So, my curiosity piqued, I went downtown the other day and picked up a copy of Dead Can Dance's "The Serpent's Egg". Overall, I find the album right up my alley, so I issue a plea to other readers: What other DCD stuff, and similar-sounding things, would you REALLY RECOMMEND to somebody who needs to start building up her contemporary music collection? Maura I suppose Meth's playlists would be a good place to start, but I'm soliciting any and all advice. ======================================================================== From: klaus@inphobos.wupper.de Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1993 06:54:38 Subject: Tomorrow's your birthday friend.... i*i*i*i*i*i *************** ***HAPPY******* ********BIRTHDAY*** ******************* ***** Kelly Baker ***** *********************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Kelly Baker Sun September 29 1974 Libra Michael Blackmore Fri October 4 1963 Libra Tim Breitkreutz Wed October 7 1964 Libra Dan Riley Sun October 8 1961 Libra Neile Graham Wed October 8 1958 pen Quenby M. Glad to see that you liked Dead Can Dance. They are quite wonderful. I'm sure the ectophiles will come though with many, many great recommendations. (This group is great for 'em.) Here's my contribution, from a group I don't see much mention of, here or anywhere else. Another group that does *some* (not all) work that's DCD-esque is Test Dept. I strongly recommend, if ya like DCD, the album _Gododdin_. It's based on an ancient Welsh poem, Y Gododdin, which chronicles the rout of the Welsh by the English in battle. Most of the lyrics on the album are in Welsh. You don't say what it is you like about DCD (not that that's always easy to define!), so please be warned that this doesn't sound like them. I find it reminiscent; it's atmospheric, otherworldly (I originally wrote "ethereal," but I'm afraid that word may erroneously connote "new age" music) and mysterious, but it doesn't make for restful listening -- parts of it are loud, crashy, and downright cacaphonous -- so if that's what you like about Dead Can Dance, this may not be to your taste. I think it's appropriately ecto-philic, though. Maybe someone else out there can second (or veto) my recommendation. -- Kate Look for: Test Dept./Brith Gof, _Gododdin_. I think it's on WaxTrax, but I can look up the reference at home later, if you're interested. Test Dept. also has many other CDs available. I've only got a few of them (damn imports!), but _Gododdin_ is definitely my fave. (I don't know much about this group; I've never been particularly lucky about finding references to them anywhere.) ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. There is an INDEX file explaining what is where. Feel free to send me things you'd like to have added. -- jessica (jessica@ns1.rutgers.edu)
