Um, well Steve, I still listen to my Gentle Giant albums now and then... and I'm going to see Spirit this Sunday in the park, with Roger McGuinn and the Turtles on the bill... I don't listen to the classic rock station sponsoring this concert but hey, you can't deny your past! I loved this music when it was new and underground, but I try to grow with the times and keep up with new music. I thank ecto for being here with wonderful recommendations! So long live retro, and long live new! Let the music play, and revel in its sweetness and power! I wasn't very upset at having to buy the Duran Duran album. Yes, I admit it...I am a closet Duranie. It all started when I was 11 and saw the video for 'Hungry Like the Wolf.' >From there it became an obsession - I would hungrily prowl the record stores, waiting for the sign to turn to open so I could be the first person in the universe to own a copy of 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger.' it just got worse. I found myself sleeping next to a duran duran pillow and even loading my walkman (nicknamed Rio) with Duran duran batteries. (yes, they really exist - could i possibly make that part up? :-) So when Meredith showed me the one collector's album I didn't have, how could I help but regress. Steve, send me the name of your therapist, right away! But seriously, I had a great time visiting meredith and woj, and if my wallet came back a little lighter, i got a silly grin on my face for all the hours of stupendous music i've enjoyed since then. Besides, they're not bad people to hang out with, anyhow. (The same for everyone else I saw there, too.) Steve VanDevender said: >This song [BSL] has removed my earwax. Modern music is good, but there's no reason to say classic rock isn't. If it weren't for classic rock, there wouldn't BE any modern music -- it's all an evolution. There are also some modern music singers who do covers of classic rock songs once in a while, come to think of it... Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1993 08:34:29 -0700 (PDT) Mjmmmmmmmmmmmm, I heard the HRP project when David Dixon (D^2) was in Los Angeles. Needless, I was surprised to hear everyone's voices, since you kind of make up your own voices for what ppl sound like across the net. or at least I do. I liked it, it was unusual to say the least. I (tape to tape) some of music ...it was all kind of bizzare. And having D^2 here is always a treat because he brings his own music along (new cd's and his own recorded music.) I can proudly say I'm a follower of Dave. Shark's song...well I was sort of surprised at it being called shark song. I thought I gave it a title. Originally it was part of "the kite" poem, but it seemingly broke off somewhere. Yes, it makes me think of a lot of different things, and in some ways describes the course of action we all seem to be in. Unfortunately, I'd have to say, the lyrics or poem are locked up somewhere. I can't remember when I wrote it or what the original title was. Thanks for posting it again, on my behalf. My problem lies in getting to the net these days, I seem to miss half or 3/4 of what ppl are saying. I heard Kate's "Big Stripey Lie" on cd as well as KROQ, a Pasadena station heard in LA. I can't say I'm pleased. I feel like she's let everyone elses music overcome her own. Major Disappointment. All I hear are her words in shadows of the instruments, screeching out to be heard. It's not pleasant. I think she should have left the band at home. I'm even more challenged to say that I love looking at the words, just reading the words and hear them in their own voice rather than listening to the music. I'm really disappointed with album. Lost music. Ok, more upbeat here, who remembers "The Specials?" Tj looked me funny the other day, but I found the import in an old bin. And "Madness" ONe_Step_Beyond. I had them on tape when I was in high school, played them out. Makes you feel good when you can now get the old music on cd. I shouldn't say old. Showing my age. I'm even more challenged to say that I love looking > at the words, just reading the words and hear them in their own voice > rather than listening to the music. I'm really disappointed with album. I get the impression you almost think that Kate was kidnapped by technogrunge musicians, taken to a studio, and held at bay with cattle prods while being forced to screech out the lyrics to the song. Everything I know of Kate would imply that she came up with the idea for the song and its sound herself, found the musicians that would accomplish that sound, set them loose, and once satisfied that she had accomplished her artistic vision, put it on the album. Who says it's not her own music? The thing that keeps Kate Bush elevated over all other popular musicians is that she is more capable of stretching herself and trying new things than any other musician I've heard. This song _is_ her music, unless you disown her of _The Dreaming_. I like "Big Stripey Lie" because it is so scary, so _different_, so noisy. It's a song from the same side of Kate who wrote "Get Out Of My House". But I agree with you that the lyrics are brilliant; I may never figure them out but the few words she says imply volumes. ======================================================================== From: Tree of Schnopia Subject: Schnopic Manifesto, 1st ed. Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1993 12:50:40 -0400 (EDT) Forwarded message: ======================================================================== From: Tree of Schnopia Subject: Silly Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1993 12:49:07 -0400 (EDT) Many have asked me about my personal philosophy/religion, Schnopia. Words are quite inadequate to describe what is probably one of the most ineffable concepts of its kind, but I have attempted to encapsulate Schnopism, the associated set of rubrics, in the English language. Enjoy this first edition of the Schnopic Manifesto. Feel free to distribute it in its entirety if you so desire. Copyright 1993 Andrew D. Simchik; comments, questions, suggestions, criticisms, and even flames will be gratefully accepted at as010b@uhura.cc.rochester.edu. --------------cut here---------------------- Schnopic Manifesto by Andrew D. Simchik, Father of Schnopism I. Life is, and thus is right. A. The Schnopist shall at all times respect, honor, and deify life. B. The Schnopist shall endeavor to avoid the taking of life, except to maintain life, in the course of naturally occurring organic impulses, such as territoriality and nourishment. C. When taking life in a legitimately Schnopic context, the Schnopist shall not suppress such pleasure as is naturally taken in violence, such as the thrill of the hunt. II. Comfort ameliorates and becomes the machine. A. A comfortable soul being conducive to the optimization of organic function, the Schnopist shall endeavor to minimize distress. B. An untroubled soul being conducive to the improvement of organic function, the Schnopist shall endeavor to avoid persistent, obsessive anxiety. The purpose served by failure or error is heuristic, not punitive. C. A joyful soul being conducive to the maintenance of organic function, the Schnopist shall endeavor to pursue those behaviors which result in a harmonized blend of moderated pleasure and clear conscience. III. To question is to be free. A. No organic machine is independent of all other organic machines, but no organic machine is naturally subordinate to any other. B. Answers are of three varieties: the fact, the theorem, and the article of faith. The fact is based upon perception, and thus is Schnopically sound. The theorem is arrived at by reason, and thus is as Schnopically sound as it is logically sound. The article of faith is an invention, and if it is not reducible to fact or theorem via observation or deduction, it is Schnopically unsound. C. The conceptual contradiction is Schnopically permissible, even within the same mind. D. The Schnopist shall be charged to question every fact, theorem, and article of faith. The test of any answer is satisfaction. IV. The tale reveals the spirit. A. The spirit is an internal construct, arising from the function of an organic machine. B. The tale is an internal construct, arising from the predictive and symbolically manipulative functions of an organic machine. C. The Schnopist shall reveal the spirit of Schnopia through tale and inventive wordplay. The internal construct made external enables communication. V. The symbol enables manipulation. A. The primary symbol that shall be used to represent Schnopia is a Tree whose roots clutch no soil. The Schnopist is represented by a Leaf, stylistically drawn in cruciform with four elliptical loops. B. Secondary symbols whose meanings reflect facets of Schnopia include the ankh, the yin-yang, the heart, the moon, the fish, the sun, the earth, and the circle. C. Terminology used to speak of Schnopia shall be as follows: Schnopia, to mean the whole of the Thing Itself; Schnopic, to describe the Thing Itself; Schnopicity, to indicate degrees of the Thing Itself; Schnopism, to mean the philosophical construct above; Schnopist, to mean the follower of the construct; Schnope, to mean the Schnopic individual; Schnop, to mean the action of the Thing Itself; other terminology may be developed in a similar manner. ======================================================================== From: boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au (Christopher Boek) Subject: Re: hello again Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1993 02:58:51 +1000 (EST) > > Welcome back Chris!!!!!! > > I don't think we know each other, but I've always wanted to say that :-) > We do now !! :) Thanks. > Philip (who's "p" key is messing up.... :( > Could make it difficult with your name ...
