So who will be next to step up and talk about their Retro Music fixation? I . . . I . . . I still like The Fixx. I'm not even ashamed. After a couple of days of removing my earwax by repeated playing of "Big Stripey Lie", I wanted a real change of pace. So I dug out a really old tape which contained _Walkabout_ by The Fixx. And I liked it. In fact, I may go hunting for the CD now. I could actually go for all four of their good albums: _Shuttered Room_, _Reach the Beach_, _Phantoms_, and _Walkabout_. Therapy helped me deal with my feelings of occasionally liking Duran Duran songs, and since then the feelings have gone away. But it's healthy to like The Fixx, isn't it? Isn't it? Don't all look at me like that. ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 22 Sep 93 00:07:00 PDT From: stevev@miser.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Big Stripey Lie This song has removed my earwax. It makes me begin to think about how much fun automatic machine guns and tactical nuclear explosions could be. I want to play it for everyone I know; at worst they will say "Someone help that poor screaming woman" and at best they will flee screaming into the streets. I think about it and I develop a manic smile that makes people edge away from me. Pick up a copy of the next DD album, "Rio". Perfect pop music, intelligent pop music, superbly produced and stunningly arranged (especially the last four tracks, the last of which is almost Ectophilic!) and one of the best albums of the 1980s. Try and pick up the UK/Europe copy if you can, which was re-mastered by producer Colin Thurston with some improved mixes of some of the songs (the original UK vinyl release, which is the tape used for the US and Japanese CD, was rushed into release before some of the mixes were properly finished). I wonder what ever happened to Colin Thurston. He did a few more pop things and vanished without trace... a very talented producer (remember "New Song" by Howard Jones?). Pop accessible, and as far as current Australian musical trends are going, almost mainstream accessible. It's the most "up" they've sounded yet. There are still some quiet tracks, but a lot of it sounds like NDW were in a good mood recording this album. It's their first without Tim Cole (who used to do the show before me on RRR-FM here in Melbourne back in 1985-86!) who was the driving "ambient" force behind the band. Incidentally, they released another album after "Claim" through Warner before signing to Mushroom - "called "Tabaran", it was recorded in Papua New Guinea and features many of the country's musicians and instruments. Strangely there are getting to be more and more of us. Mike Matthews used to live in Rockville, though he recently moved to Centerville, VA. Angel Weaver lives around here; she's an honorary Ectophile (Vickie--I still have her number but haven't had a chance to get in touch yet). Dunno 'bout Baltimore, but in DC your best bet for the RBG single is at Olsson's (there are a number of 'em strewn around DC). Any decent import shop in Baltimore should have it. I've seen a whole lot of 'em around DC. As I stated on Sunday, I found, much to my amazement, RhodeSongs at Kemp Mill. I've yet to see one at Tower or Melody, the two DC shops that usually carry Happy's stuff. You might check a Sam Goody--if they don't have it, they should be able to order it. Copperman Subject: RHP doze, no DCD shows, ticket woes Red House Painters - My opinions after a few listens, not all continuous, and probably not all awake, is that I agree with Meredith. First off, it's just too long for me to enjoy (~75 min). It takes a few songs for me to get into it, I like it for about 5 songs after that, then I start to get bored, then I start to get iritated, and there's probably still 15 minutes left. It's mostly strummy acoustic guitars, with subtle piano and drums thrown in. Rather mellow. I can't help but think it would be so much better with a female vocalist, but maybe a more convincing male one would also do the trick. It also seems possible that the music will grow on me over time. It has very little for me to immediately grab onto, which is often a sign that I'll like it after a dozen listens. Sally Fingerett - I was introduced to her on the first Bitchin' Babes album and the second BB tour, where they foolishly replaced Patty Larkin with Julie Gold (ick). I thought her songs were standouts on that disc, and I bought her disc that came out at the time with The Ballad of ? & ? (He met her in college, she was drunk loud and boisterous, she always sang out of key ). I recently bought a re-issue of her first disc, which has Ladies Lunch from the BB disc on it, and it is just as wonderful. She has a deep expressive voice, and she writes incredibly moving lyrics. The first disc, now called enclosed (or was that enclosure) was recorded around 1981. She was in a car accident shortly after that, and quit performing to raise her children. She returned to the stage and the studio with urging from Christine Lavin for the Bitchin' Babes shows. I hadn't heard of a new album, but I recommend the other two for anyone that likes folk type music. John SANDOVAL: I've heard it claimed the An Die Music, in Towson (way north in Baltimore) is a pretty reliable carrier of Happy Rhodes stuff. I wasn't aware of Happy til I came out here, and don't know what places carry her. There are a few Tower Records in the DC and north area, Music Exchange on Charles near the Washington Monument, Compact Discovery and Vinyl Ink in Silver Spring. Those are the places I did much of my shopping (plus the occasional Kemp Mill), where you might have some luck. Let me know when you will be in San Diego. Maybe we can get together and knock each others cities :) Dead Can Dance: AFter finding out that tickets went on sale late on Monday, I hightailed it over to a TicketMaster, but I was too late (mostly). I think my single ticket would have been one of seven left. THe guy was pretty amazed at how bad the seats were (Woah, pretty bad seats, dude - he had Bat Out of Hell II blasting away in the store). I think it was in the back of the second balconey, on the very end, directly beside the stage, probably providing an excellent view of the side of the speaker cabinet. I've had very good experiences just driving to sold-out shows in San Diego and buying tickets on the street, but I don't know if I want to drive two hours to try that. We'll have to see though. As a consolation prize I bought tickets to see the Cranberries next week. neal ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 22 Sep 93 17:24:10 CDT From: courtney dallas Subject: list of semi-reserved kate posters ok guys...here it is...this is an infornmal list of requests for the gratis poster i have been plugging!! it is subject to change due to arrival of money for postage. i will also repost my address and my request for $2 for postage fees.
