Well, you're all welcome any time! :-) NTSC is the video system that US and Japanese TV broadcasters and video equipment in general use. It's completely incompatible with PAL, the European/Australian system. PAL uses more lines in the picture, less frames per second, a different colour encoding system, and in the case of VHS a slower tape speed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au "I kind of feel like I'm Metallica..." - Tori Amos on the perils of long tours, November 1992 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== Subject: Peter Carey Date: Sat, 18 Sep 93 08:50:45 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu I wrote: >> one. Because he only *thinks* he's a top flight Unix dweeb, he managed to send it only to me. Normally Mike is anal enough to save copies of every bloody thing he sends out. Goodness knows why he didn't have a copy of this one. Guess all that time spent in front of those giant monitors is finally getting to him. Fortunately, I'm polite enough to happily forward it to the list. Unfortunately, for Mike at least, is that I'll take the opportunity to make fun of him for his mistake while I'm at it. And the best part is, he's out of town 'til tomorrow night. He won't even see this 'til most folks are finished laughing at him. Or something. ;-) Anyway, From Mike: ------------- > Is this a common thing? My sister-in-law has an adopted dog named Mom. > The story was: Not sure whether or not the name 'Mom' and its derivations are common, but I'm sure that adopting pets is. We mustn't forget about Trouble. Trouble was my family's first cat. He wandered into our court one day, and since we had the loudest can opener he stuck with us. Great big 20 pound orange tabby. Perfect for snuggling, as he pretty much morphed into whatever shape you wanted. > My grandmother is *constantly* confused by this; every time I'm at my > grandparents' along with my brother and his wife, I always inquire as to > Mom's well-being. My grandmother here's a mention of 'mom' and immediately > assumes we're talking about her! Well, the occasional passers-by would often wonder why were were looking for Trouble, so that's close. :-) > Jeff - ------ Mike Matthews, Mike_Matthews@sgate.com (NeXTmail accepted) - ------ Ducharm's Axiom: If you view your problem closely enough you will recognize yourself as part of the problem. ------------------------- And now my own response, which might as well go here instead of another message: I knew the aforementioned Trouble. This cat was BIG. REAL BIG. 20 pounds is an ungodly size for a household feline. I always joke that one reasond dogs are better than cats is that you can comfortably use the for pillows (at least the dogs that are worth having). Trouble definitely fit into that category. The thing is, it seems to be something to do with the feline's control over the Matthews family in getting the members to feed their "pets" (read: masters) to feed them too often. Mike will deny it, but they have a *talent* at growing large cats. After Trouble passed away (apparently of old age and not a corronary), they got a new cat ("Mistra" until they realized they'd gotten a male and not a female, at which time he was renamed "Mister"). While I don't think Mister will ever hit the 20 pound mark, he's still one of the larger cats I own. I'm always amazed when I see cats like Our Beth's Petey (or his playmate over the summer, Mischief), both of whom are normal-sized cats. I don't know what it is about the Matthews household that produces such large beasties. Perhaps it's the funny green glow I've seen emmanating from the washroom. Last night I was on my way home and decided to walk a block down Telegraph Av. to check out Cody's books (a Berkeley landmark) which I hadn't done yet, but on the way decided to stray a bit on the other side of the street and walk into Amoeba music. I left an hour and a half later, with no less than 12 CDs in my hands having spent the outrageous amount of $16. You see they had a $.50 clearance on CD singles and EPs... I couldn't resist purchasing: Big Catholic Guilt-Judgement. The best Boston NIN meets Metallica band. Their song 'Silence' is worth the money alone, not to mention 'Tom'. Cavedogs-Joy Rides for shut-ins. Everybody should be required to own a copy of this. Beautiful songs with beatlesque harmonies and with a neo-grungy edge. Cavedogs-Rock in the house (?)- EP with 5 songs two of which were unreleased, from their second album 'Soul Martini'. Some of the magic is lost, but most of it is still there. Sam black church-Boston. Well, I remember reading here that this was good, so for 50 cents I said why not? and bought it. It might be too much on the speed metal side for my taste. The story-five excerpts from the angel in the house. This one came in a jewel box alone without *any* info... It wouldn't make a difference. I think the five tracks on it are worse than anything in Grace in Gravity. Get rid of that band, and focus on the acoustic guitar and vocals. Please. Zap Mama-Play these songs often. A 4 song sampler from their album. Excellent. "Bottom" is *SO* much fun. Their voices melt together to create a wonderful sound. Me Phi Me-Pu'sh yo hands 2 gether. Now this is Rap I can handle. 4 versions of the song that sound totally different. One is full of samples and beats, another one is a piano/gospel version and the album version is an acoustic guitar and a heavy drums rhythm. VERY GOOD!! The other song on the CD single sampled sopme armenian musician and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Good stuff. Laurie Freelove- Heaven on earth. I loved this song on the album, so I looked forward to 3 remixes of it. But what caught my attention was a live version of 'Dear Prudence' which is out-of-this-world. Grant Lee Buffalo-Fuzzy. Fuzzy and warm and blue indeed. Men without hats-in the 21st century. Listened to it once, but their version of Abba's 'SOS' is brilliant. And that was before 'Abbaesque'. Frank Tovey-Sam hall. Fad Gadget goes irish-folk. It was a shock to hear "Ricky's hand" performed with guitars, harmonicas and other acoustic instruments. I wonder when the original Human League will re-group and do an acoustic tour performing "Empire State Human" and "Being boiled" :). Still it's an interesting CD3. Orangutang-something... Well, I was present at the filmning of this boston band's first video at Bunratty's after an Arson Garden concert and should have known better... Big hair rock. 'Nuff said. Phew! I think I should go back home and re-listen to all of these trying to avoid Amoeba on the way... :-) WOMAD tomorrow. YAY!!!!!!!!!!
