Well, I love the pictures (my memory is too fuzzy to recall in which concert Happy was wearing the black top featured in the cover picture- it wasn't Philly, that I know). I also love 'Summer' whose lyrics follow (I *think* nobody has posted them yet): Ooh to feel the wind That rushes from those lips With an ever quickening pace Will I always see that face Coming for my love to save Go away go away [Something that sounds like all the way :-)] There are no words to say When you look, I look away While in my mind I dream That you're dying to be with me But I won't let my weakness show I will never let you know So leave me alone Let me alone ---------------- In other news thanks to Vickie for the WOMAD info. Where can we order tickets for the WOWMAD (World of Woman in Music, Arts, and Dance) that you will soon be organizing. Your line-up sounded great. We should write to PG and point out the disparity here. He seems a pretty sensitive sort, maybe he'll fix it for next year. Philip Sainty wonders about Strictly Ballroom: It's been playing pretty widely around the states. The two local reviews I saw panned it, but I don't know why. Everyone I know who saw it thought it was great fun. I think they were taking it much to seriously. Alex: That was a great description of magneto-optic discs. Yes, I am the one who wrote the An Die Musik blurb for the "Best of Baltimore" City Paper. They have at various points during the past six months carried all of Happy's albums, but recently they've been down to one "Equipoise" and an "Ecto." They haven't gotten "RhodeSongs" yet, so I thought my mention would shame them into ordering lots more Happy. 410-296-8742 is the number in case any ectophiles would like to call up and say, "Wow! I saw that you carry Happy Rhodes! Do you have any copies of 'RhodeSongs' in stock?" I agree that this does not seem like much compared to stores in other cities that have huge displays and multiple copies of everything, but it's more than you'll get in any other record store in Baltimore (i.e. a blank stare from the clerk when you ask for her). And they do file her under R. Re: listening to music: Because I am forced by circumstances to listen to music chosen by others for several hours a day, any time spent listening to my own favorites is precious. I tend to listen to the same few things over and over again; lately, that's included Liz Phair, Aimee Mann and Urge Overkill. I tape my favorite CDs to play in my car. I am tremendously impressed by Glenn's dedication in writing his own album guide, but I'm too lazy for that :-) I'll stick with the Rolling Stone Album Guide; even if "The Dreaming" only rates three stars out of five, at least that's better than the last edition, which if memory serves compared Kate's voice to a vacuum cleaner ... I am, however, trying to catalog all my CDs on my computer using a program called MyTreasures. It's super-nifty, only costs $9, and has space for 60,000 entries. How do y'all keep up? Long commutes? Speaker-under-the-pillow? >How many hours a day are you plugged into music? a question that drives deep to my heart. as meredith will agree, i've a ridiculous amount of music on all formats (nevermind the synergy with footah's collection). i physically *can not* listen to all of it in a year considering the amount of time that i have available to listen (the evenings i'm home and the commute to work and the weekend driving to wherever) even if you do not factor in the added complication of listening to favorites again as well as repeating new releases. basically, everything that i buy or am given is listened to at least once. if i'm unsure of what i think, a second listen is definitely in order. if it is goddesshead, many more listens are in order. if i don't like it either is relegated to the to-sell pile or i keep it for any number of reasons (it's collectible, i like the band but hate the record, i may want to save it for radio purposes (if i ever get a show again), etc). older stuff tends to get pulled out occasionally and i do make an effort to pull stuff that i've ignored for some time if only to assuage my conscience (though, in most cases, it's not often necessary :) on the other hand, a lot of stuff that i do have i don't really need to listen to constantly. for instance, the 100 odd robyn hitchcock concerts do not require repeated listens by any means. i hang on to them since i'm a hitchhead, they're good trade fodder (r.e.m. even more so) and they are some of the only places that you can hear a number of odd songs, unreleased songs and so forth. sez: >BTW WRT how many ectophiles can fit in a Chevy Cavalier: imho, six is a low and unrespectable number. of course, that's all we had to work with. next time there are more than 6 ectophiles concurrently in the same place as me and the car, we'll have to do better! mojzes@monet.rutgers.edu (brni) sez: >i don't know about cavaliers, but when i was in high school we fit >10 or 11 inside an impala, and another 5 clung to the roof/hood/trunk/ >windshield/mirror. we never expected steve to actually start driving, >tho!!!! by then it was far too late to get off... only eleven? yow. my parents used to have the world's coolest impala station wagon. lean, mean, ugly tan in color and stinky. i think they called it ol'bessie. i dunno how many we ever fit in it, but it was more than that. Relieved the local Sam Goody of their copy of RhodeSongs this evening, and have had it on shuffle play ever since. This is a very good compilation, even if she did include "I Have A Heart", which is high up on my list of those songs she never should have committed to tape. It flows well (I listened to it straight through the first time), is a good representative sampling of her stuff so far, and should go a long way towards exposing her to even more people, especially with the cover. Did I say I love the cover? No? I LOVE THE COVER!!! Wow. And the photos inside are all great, too. And I *love* Summer. It reminds me of something, but I can't quite put my finger on what. Their first album (can't remember the name- footah?) was a hit in Boston, and was distributed much like Happy's early stuff- via word of mouth, a radio station that caught on, and a little luck. Their music is acoustic/electric/folk with a country twang, the last of which I wasn't expecting when I got the album, but I can deal with it. I dunno, but that brought to mind a long-repressed memory: of walking into the dining hall for breakfast one day during high school and finding a Volkswagen Rabbit parked in front of the salad bar. It seems a bunch of large students had taken it upon themselves to move one of the math teacher's car from its spot behind the girls' dorm during the night, and since the double doors going into the dining hall were wide enough for a car of that size when opened, they decided to put it there and see how long it was before somebody noticed. I don't see how it could have been missed, but stranger things haven't been seen, like the 12-foot tall wooden camel in the nativity scene my mother stared at for the duration of midnight Mass one Christmas and didn't see at all.
