I've got a few ideas for the Bay Area sampler, but I don't know enough SF-area bands to fill an entire tape with one song per band. So far, I have D'Cuckoo, Penelope Houston, Linda Brady, and myself in mind (shameless self-promotion, I know. :) ). If you'd like to hear my tape, I can just send one to you, and if you like it, you can pay me $9. If you don't, you can just send it back. Now that that's out of the way.. hair. I used to have shoulder-length locks, but got them snipped about a year ago. I don't regret it. Not only do I not missing having clogged drains and hair in my food, but I look better w/ short hair anyway. My driver's license is from my longhair days, so when I use it for ID, I get a few double-takes. Angelos let me borrow his ETM single.. to be honest, I'm not crazy about it. ETM is bo-RING. Only three chords in the whole song! She could've varied the instrumentation a *little* more. BSL is a little better, but not particularly engaging yet. Maybe with repeated listens... CitW didn't excite me either. What a downer. Oh well. Tomorrow I depart for LA for the Jeopardy taping on Tuesday. I'll be staying with Shark & TJ, so I'll be Ecto-able. I've made up a few sets of flash cards for the 9 hour drive down (World capitals, Biblical characters, etc.) By Monday I'll be completely frantic. I'm listening to the cd currently while I have it on unofficial loan from the station, see it pays to have the 10-2am shift, you get to hear all the new stuff that comes in before anyone else! This one seems more middle eastern in feel and sound. I love it so far! The single The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove is wonderful, and may actually get them a bit of airplay - doubtful on my station however. *grumble grumble* Other album favis so far...The Spider's Stratagem ( wins the coolest song name award too), Saldek, and Ariadne.....though it's hard to pick favorites because they are all wonderful. The album really reminds me of Happy in places.... I think it may be snatches of keyboard riffs that sound similar. Other keyboard bits remind me of Enyaish type stuff, with a DCD twist of course. I think y'all will like it, and if you're like me, love it! kiri *sifting through the sands to find the seven veils* ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 11 Sep 93 22:52 MET DST From: uli@zoodle.robin.de (Ulrich Grepel) Subject: Attention European MTV watchers!!!!!!!!! Hi 48 seconds... that's all Paul King showed of the new Rubberband Girl video on MTV First Look. Why didn't they show the complete thing? Why? WHY?!??? Well, then 48 seconds have to suffice for the moment! First a statement I think I have to make: Rubberband Girl in fact sounds much better in hifi than it did in 8kHz 8bit mono soundfile. So much better that I think I'll start liking the song. Better: loving the song. Kate - your voice is as beautiful as ever, that really was the low-fi. Now to the video: Kate looks great, she's dancing with some male dancer who moves more or less exactly the way she does. Some of the movements Kate puts her feet onto the feet of the dancer and so they move synchronously. Looks funny. Looks great. Did I say that Kate looks great too? Yes I did. But it's true. No. It's not enough: She looks gorgeous! In the background a lot of musicians play a various mixture of instruments, as far as I could see Prince was not inbetween them, even if he was audible on BVs and guitar in the 48 seconds they showed. Well, probably Prince was too busy with his tour to appear in the video. Have I said before that I think the video is great? Yes? Doesn't matter, it can be said repeatedly... [rewind, play again...] Aaaahhhhh!!! finally! Ah yes, Paul King still thinks that the album will be released on October 4th, but he was wrong last time too... Let's just hope it will stay October 4th! At least in the UK. [rewind, play again...] Aaaaahhhhhh!!!! FINALLY! Actually the male dancer behind her leads her arms and legs through the dance. Yep, it's worth it - but it is rather short (it's sold as a cut-price CD here); the versions of the songs on this CD are at times dramatically different from the final recorded versions, and in many cases, they're better. The version of "Coast Is Clear" - a song they wrote the day before the recording session that produced the version on this CD - is a gem. :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au "I kind of feel like I'm Metallica..." - Tori Amos on the perils of long tours, November 1992 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== From: Mike Matthews Subject: A(nother?) star among us! This is a strange deal in that they collect and compile all their orders and send them in a once to their distributors in October, so it takes a while and sometimes the distributors are sold out of something they've told CD's We Bee will be available, but in my experience it's worth a shot.
