Hi everyone, I've had this idea bouncing around in my head for a couple of weeks and I've finally got a chance to mention it... When Jenn and I went back to San Diego in June, we tried to let as many people as possible know about Happy's music. One of the days while I was out there, my sister and I went into one of my favorite record stores, called "Blue Meanie Records". (It's in El Cajon, Neal, in case you'd be interested). I was talking to one of the sales people who I knew was a Kate fan, and I mentioned Happy. Of course, he'd never heard of her. I wanted to give him the address to AG, but I didn't have it. Now, I've been thinking, wouldn't it be great to have something like business cards that we could give to people? The cards would have the Happy catalog on one side, and the address on the other. I know something like this was included in EQ and CD5, but I don't want to give mine up. :) I was just thinking of a simple card, with the info on it. Comments?? In answer to Bob Lovejoys' question about whether RhodeSongs has made it in retail outlets; the answer is YES! I saw it last Saturday at 21st Century Sound in Bryn Mawr. It's Lenny's (the owner) pick of the week. He recom- mends it because the choice and sequence of songs is so well done. I hadn't heard about it either, but then that's not *totally* a shock, since since school started, if it isn't splattered all over the media, I more than likely haven't heard about it. ;) But if there are tickets left after my last class this week, you know that I am *there*. The Mayfair is a cool place. If I remember correctly, it's the theatre used in Henry Jaglom's SOMEONE TO LOVE. Copperman Subject: brain drizzle Anthony writes about Margot Smith. Wow, sounds great. Is it going to be released stateside too? or do we have to go through our favorite Australian contacts? Mary Coughlin sounds great too Vickie. Are her albums widely available? What label are they on? and are they generally hidden away in the Irish section of the store? Isn't it stupid how record stores have to divide there music up so explicitly? Tower even has all it's African music divided by country, and I have a terrible time remembering where some of the bands are from. And while I'm sort of on the subject, where does one look for Ingrid Karklins albums too? CALIFORNIA ECTOPHILES: The Jane Siberry show at the Mayfair Theater in Santa Monica (sept 17) is General Admission and costs $16 + $3.25 TicketMaster charge. I don't know how the charges vary from city to city, so that was from San Diego. Something worth noting is that the very next day is WOMAD (Cal State Demingas(?) Hills Football Stadium, noon - ?? $30+4). It's sounding like a great time for a weekend trip to LA. I was already planning on WOMAD, but I'm thinking about hotels to squeeze Jane in too. (They also said that Dead Can Dance tickets weren't listed yet.) Boxing Helena vs. Kalifornia: Well, I saw Helena last night, and I vote for Kalifornia as being chillingly effective. Actually, that could perhaps apply to about 5 scenes in Helena, but mostly it was just laughably bad. Although the last 3 minutes worked pretty well, so you could leave the theater with a better feeling than most any other time in the movie. Bob L. commands: > PS - And don't forget Mitch Elrod! Help make AG profitable; order yours > today!!! > Is anyone else beginning to suspect that Bob Lovejoy and Mitch Elrod may well be the same person? Has anyone seen them together? Dennis P: I was almost afraid that those were the two Pogues albums you got as imports, not like they aren't actually worth the money, but they should both be available domestically. My Rum, Sodomy & the Lash is an import I got about 9 years ago, but the domestic one had lyrics, while my import didn't. Actually, the album was the coolest, with lyrics and hilarious picturs. Red Roses For Me I picked up domestically and I think it's on something like Ryko, in case anyone else cares? (They are both worth import prices though, just don't try that on any other Pogues album. The Straight to Hell soundtrack is also a fun one for Pogues fans. ) Amy Tan fans, mourn and rejoice, in the fact that her third book is being delayed, but at least it's so she can help write the script for Kitchen God's Wife. I just want to know what Oliver Stone's name is doing anywhere near the Joy Luck Club. I'm sure I must have worn out my welcome for now, and pleasantly delayed the start of my work day by about 45 minutes. Nope. Neither is available domestically. They both *used* to be (hmmm...has there been a reprint that I wasn't notified of?) Another one of my smack-in-the-forehead experiences was the day my freshman year of college that I didn't buy the domestic _Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash_ and _Poguetry in Motion_ CDs at a store in Bloomington. MAJOR oops. I ended up paying $23 for my RS&L and was happy/lucky to get "Poguetry in Motion" when it was re-released a year or two ago (with the remixed "Rainy Night in SoHo"; I also have a tape of the original vinyl, so I have the "real" "Rainy Night..." too). >My Rum, Sodomy & the Lash is an import I >got about9 years ago, but the domestic one had lyrics, while my import >didn't. I've never seen a domestic copy of the album at all... >(They are both worth >import prices though, just don't try that on any other Pogues album. The >Straight to Hell soundtrack is also a fun one for Pogues fans. ) _Straight to Hell_ contains the single best version of "Danny Boy" ever. I wish they'd let Cait sing more when she was with the band. (the single *funniest* version ever has to be the one done by the Leatherman in the movie _Can't Stop the Music_ (in which the Village People are purported to be straight; unfortunately their acting abilities just aren't up to the task...;-)) Jeff (waiting 'til Friday when he can get downtown to check the few local stores who carry Happy to see if _RhodeSongs_ is in yet...) ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 8 Sep 93 14:06:50 PDT From: kyrlidis@templeton.cchem.berkeley.edu (Angelos Kyrlidis) Subject: Eat the music... Hi, On a not-so-Happy topic I would like to report here where the flames are weaker that I *hate* that new Kate Bush song. It sounds like *bad* Gloria Estefan. Ugh! [OK, now I said it, it's just my opinion...] Still unable to locate RhodeSongs. Amoeba has a couple of used Happy CDs. A Warpaint for 4.95, and an Ecto for 7.95. [BTW, the Warpaint is an original pressing, sans barcode]. I also tried to find _Vena Cava_, the new Diamanda Galas Cd but all three places I looked at didn't have it. In other news, my sister, her kids and I had a great weekend checking out the Bay Area's amusement parks, and got the biggest thrill in the parking lot of 'Great America' where we misplaced the car and had to search for an hour before giving up and getting the park's security to locate it for us.[ It was quite a scene... ;-)] What's this about a Gabriel tour bus accident? Does it affect WOMAD? I was looking forward to seeing him there next Sunday, and maybe catching his show in Oakland. I hope everybody's fine. Hmmm...I think that's about all for now. Oh, how I miss the days of direct bounce ecto and access from home... I think I should start looking for a computer and modem. :( Out of touch, suspended in CA, Angelos 'My ears (still) have parasites'-Happy (not) Rhodes Ps. Could someone post the lyrics to Summer? ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 8 Sep 93 14:20:26 PDT From: Neal R. Copperman Subject: Eat The Music, but not that icky Indian stuff Jeffy (and Dennis): Ah well, didn't realize they had slid out of print. The Red Roses For Me that I was talking about is on disc. I think I got it about 4 or 5 years ago. I'll double check, wait, now I think it was on Enigma. I'll check it tonight. I just returned from a truly terrible lunch at the mall. In fact, at a good Indian place where I accidently ordered things covered with a heavy coat of corn with greasy and equally heavy stuffed Indian bread on the side. At least they were generous. Half the amount would be adequate to make most people ill. That's what I get for eating vegetarian. All the meat dishes I've had there have been wonderful. But the notable part of lunch was a detour into the mediocre mall record store, where they had a copy of a new Kate Bush single sitting out. I haven't heard any mention of this being out, so I'll go into a bit of detail. IT was called Eat the Music and contained 4 songs, 2 versions of Eat the Music (about 5 and 9 minutes long each, the longer being labeled 12''), Big Stripey Lie and Candle in the Wind. The shorter EtM and Big Stripey Lie were from the forthcoming album the Red Shoes. All tracks were produced by our Kate. The cover really caught me off guard. It was a definite double-take when I saw the Kate name on it. IT has a pair of hands ripping open a piece of fruit and all around there are exotic fruits that have already been opened up. The cover is very very colorful (and messy), with the multitudes of pulpy, juicy fruits filling all the space. The back showed a small picture of The Red Shoes album, which looked kind of like a progressive rock album, maybe by YES or Camel or something. It was black a circle in the middle. Around (and above) the circle on the top were the words Kate Bush and around the bottom it said the Red Shoes. Inside was a painting(?) of a womans feet clad in red ballet shoes (and perhaps red tights), one foot flat on the ground and the other on point. It looked pretty but the style reminded me of progressive rock stuff. THe front still seems a surprising departure to me. It was listed at $6.99, which is what this place was selling all it's singles for. Plus, yesterday in the mail Imago sent me a survey about Aimee Mann since I sent in the card from Whatever when ordering the Imago Road Show disc. They asked a bunch of questions, like what the last three discs I bought were (this included Jane and Heidi Berry. Hey, maybe I'll go home and change it to say I bought a Happy Rhodes disc too. Any PR can't hurt.) The rest were real standard questions, plus what were my favorite songs from the album. I suspected they were looking for suggestions for singles from this poll. IN return for doing this they are supposed to send me a poster of Aimee. The mailing included a paper-sized poster of Amy in a leather jacket looking very waifish and adorable, with slightly above the shoulder scraggly blond hair, not unlike Julian Sands' hair in Boxing Helena. It was signed (well, not really signed, you know, fake signed) love and whatever, Aimee. It looks like the pictures you see on the walls in bars that have a lot of bands come through. Geez, I sure have been wordy today. Been there, done that, *loved* it. ;-) A good friend of mine is a huge Pogues fan and he was in London between November and June. Somewhere over the atlantic, we crossed letters--I wrote to tell him about the great single I'd just picked up and he'd written to say the same. We apparently managed to buy the CD within a day of each other, many thousands of miles apart. In addition to the duet on the Louis Armstrong song, the CD also features Nick Cave singing "Rainy Night in SoHo" and Shane MacGowan singing...oh, piffle, I can't think of the Nick Cave song. "Train Song" maybe? No, I don't think so. But it's from that album. Or something like that. Definitely more interesting than the new Pogues single *and* it's domestic. Jeff ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 8 Sep 93 22:56:14 MET From: brage@sphere.home.id.dth.dk (Jens P. Brage) Subject: Cross - Over - Tones Hi! I was at a truly Ecto-style concert tonight, called "Cross - Over - Tones". I only became aware of the concert yesterday, when my brother phoned to tell me that he had seen on TV that Liam O'Flynn was playing at a concert in Copenhagen tonight. As the uillean pipes are my favorite instrument and as I've had never heard them live, I went and got a ticket, without really knowing what kind it concert it was going to be... Well it turned out to be most interesting. It was arrangede by Amnesty International (another plus in my book...) and featured quite a diverse set of musicians (folk, jazz and medieval music artists): Liam O'Flynn: Uillean pipes Mehmet Ozan: Percussion, guitar and saz Agnete Christensen: Vocals Poul Hoexbro: Pipe, drum and pandeiro Karsten Jensen: Organ (the concert took place in a church) Helen Davies: Harps Palle Mikkelborg: Trumpet and synth (Roland DX50) The music was as varied; modern classical music, Irish and Swedish traditionals, avantgarde jazz, industrial and medieval music... Liam O'Flynn only played three songs (unlike most of the other artists who joined in on several songs), but I guess the uillean pipes aren't really made for discreet background instrumentation... ;-) Two of the songs were solos, the third included Helen Davies on harp. Impressive to see him play both the main pipe (what's it called?) and the drone pipes... I *will* have to learn that instrument! ;-) Poul Hoexbro played lead in several songs (playing drum and pipe simultaneously), including the "Saltarello" Dead Can Dance plays on "Aion". Impressive... Mehmet Ozan's percusion was amazing, some of the songs were almost entirely based on him (and should have been well able to satisfy the industrial music/noise buffs out there!). I don't know where Agnete Christensen comes from, but I would guess Sweden or Norway based on her voice. Her voice is a little like Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance, but in a lower register (I think one of Vickie's tapes has a singer with a similar voice, but I can't remember whom). Yummy... Helen Davies (I'm pretty sure I've heard her name before...) played quite a variety of styles, from soft dreamily harp songs reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt to harsh abrupt accompaniment to Mehmet Ozan's percussion... Karsten Jensen played two movements of Olivier Messiaen's "La Nativite du Seigneur" at the beginning and end of the concert. The first part (2nd movement) was a bit odd, starting out as a slow minimalistic piece and then developing into a sort of fantasia (unfortunately, this part was a bit spoiled by the quality of the pibe organ, it sounded pretty cheesy when played only in the mid and upper ranges). The end piece (3rd movement) was more like a classical (e.g., Bach) organ piece. Finally, Palle Mikkelborg played a nice trumpet and provided atmospherical synth backgrounds for some pieces. In short: Sort of Dead Can Dance meets Miranda Sex Garden with a few pure Irish traditionals and some jazz thrown in for good measure... Quite an eclectic concert, pure Ecto-fodder! ;-) Unfortunately, I believe this was the last concert in a purely Danish tour, so the rest of you will probably not get to see it. But at least, you might want to look out for the artists... PS: brni's father stayed over in my apartment yesterday, on his journey back to the US. So the Copenhagen EctoHostel is hereby declared open and functioning... ;-) Jens P.
