I usually carry one with me but last night I didn't take my big purse and didn't have one to give her. If I'd been thinking straight I would have realized... 1) Mary is playing in New Orleans the 16th. 2) Jordan is there filming _Interview With A Vampire_. 3) Mary was in Jordan's film "High Spirits." 4) Jordan might be at the gig. Those are 2+2 things I should have put together without any other info but none of it clicked together. As it turns out, there's a lot more to it that I didn't know until the interview. Mary Coughlin and Neil Jordan are very good friends and have been for years. Mary has been in 2 Jordan films. Besides "High Spirits" she was in one called "Miracles" which I have never seen or heard about. Mary even bought her house in Ireland from Neil Jordan! Oh my, I wish we had Ectophiles in New Orleans, because Mary said that he would definitely be at the show, along with many of the cast and crew from Vampire. It would be a perfect chance to get Jordan a copy of Equipoise in an informal setting, free of red tape. The next best thing would be to give one to Mary and ask her to give it to Neil. Is anyone game? (An aside about "High Spirits" that she threw out was that it was massively, heart-breakingly re-edited by the studio before release. Mary's part was a *lot* bigger and most of it ended up snipped out. She said that Neil owns the rights to the video release but that he just hasn't had time to mess around with it. I hope someday we'll see the director's cut of it.) I had such a great time yesterday! It started out by meeting an English Ectophile and ended up with sitting in a bar having a drink and chatting with Mary Coughlin! Chip and I went out to O'Hare and met with Geoff "we showed him the Cool Thing at O'Hare airport" Parks. After showing him the Cool Thing, we found a quiet place to sit down and talk. Geoff gave me a wonderful present, a Bjork "Venus As A Boy" CD single with extra tracks! I even got to do some Happyvangelizing at the airport, when someone was intrigued by my Ecto T-shirt and asked about it. It was a nice way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon and I hope that Geoff can come back sometime when he can spend more time in Chicago. After stopping by Chip's place and sampling some of his excellent chili, we came back to Gaffa Central and listened to music while waiting for Charley to come over. Charley was busy making a tape for Mary. We had talked about the fact that Mary has only covered songs by male songwriters and Charley wanted to make a tape of songs by female songwriters that had the "Mary Coughlin sound." Chip, Charley, Charley's friend Joy and I headed out to St. Xavier's University where the Irish Festival was being held. It had been raining off and on all day, so there weren't very many people left there. Still, the concert was great, Mary was great, the band was great (even better than the night before) and the interview went wonderfully! She's very, very nice, articulate and interesting. I interviewed her after the show, in a room at the university, with Chip, Charley and Joy there too. Charley had his own questions too, so the pressure wasn't all on me. It was all very informal and fun. At the end of it, Charley gave Mary the tape he'd made and she seemed quite pleased. (If we ever hear Mary cover Jane Siberry, Lisa Germano, Eddi Reader or Wendy MaHarry, among others, Charley is the one who gets the credit.) The tour manager invited us back to the hotel to have a drink at the bar and we accepted, except Joy who had brought her own car and went home. Mary had a 7:00am flight to Boston so we assumed that she'd go to bed immediately, but shortly after we got to the bar and sat down, she came in and sat down with us! She sat with us for at least an hour and we all talked about lots of different subjects, ranging from James Joyce to Neil Jordan to Irish politics. I got a few show IDs and we exchanged addresses, I gave her a hug and she left. It was a wonderful evening! I do hope that some other Ectophiles will make it to this concert, and if you talk to the fella who is selling CDs, mention "Vickie in Chicago who interviewed Mary" and the computer net because I told him that I posted dates in hope of getting other people to the show. His name is Jim. If someone does give Mary an Equipoise, you'll have to tell the story from scratch because I didn't get a chance to talk to her about Happy. You'll have to explain why we want Neil Jordan to hear "He Will Come" and "The Flight." Could someone either repost or send me the Dead Can Dance Tour info, since I foolishly didn't save it anywhere? Thanks. Can someone give me some info on Madder Rose. They are playing an hour from here with Juliana Hatfield 3. JH3 is also playing at a street fair I'm going to this weekend, so I was wondering if I should make the trek for MR. This weekends Street Scene is a mammoth street fair, featuring 75 bands, including people like B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Thomas Mapfumo, X, Los Lobos, Belly and about 70 more. The only bad news is they are all on about 10 different stages, so there are bound to be multiple great bands playing at once. The whole thing adds up to 15 hours of music and food and crowds and whatnot over two days, so maybe I should spend my week in a sensory deprivation tank rather than driving up to see more bands. Jane in LA!!!!!!! May be the last person on the list to see The Fugitive, but it was great. I expected it to be fun, but I didn't expect it to be clever. What a nice surprise.
