In fact (*shameless plug alert*), this Friday I'm premiering a performance piece, "Minyan (After Chagall)" here in Austin, which is heavily influenced by him, in his use of Jewish subject matter, bright colors, and the way that lotsa things are happening at once with often no single focus or orientation. In the piece, four of us are dancing/moving to a tape of field recordings I made in Jerusalem at the Western Wall a few years ago. BTW, are there any other Austin Ectophiles? I know Happy has off-line fans here, and hope she'll come here on her tour. ======================================================================== From: snpf@ugcs.caltech.edu (The Duchess Of York) Date: Sat, 4 Sep 93 14:05:07 -0700 Subject: stephen king in oct. hello. my shoe size is approximately 7 1/2 . -seanympf (i shaved my head last night...hat size decrease :) ) ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 4 Sep 93 21:34 EDT From: robert@deepspace.nj00802.sai.com (Robert Lovejoy) Subject: The AG lackey here! Hello ecto! Hope at least one or two of us orders the Mitch Elrod album from AG! After all, I'm on a mission from God! And speaking of the Blues Brothers, I am really glad to hear that Happy is starting to garner some serious airply in Chicago! We Philophiles are lucky WXPN discovered her two years ago, and now another major city is about to be Happyized! Congrats to all the local ectophiles who kept up the pressure to get her on the air! Vickie, I hope you got my message. The way things have been with this service I can't be sure. I hope those titles are not out of print... Welcome back Courtney. Nice to have people coming back! Things have been fuzzy and blue while you were gone. Last night we stayed up late and listened to Happy real loud! It was a mini-celebration; we just got approved for refinancing our home. Our interest rates really dropped, but we just got hit with a massive property tax increase. We still came out a bit ahead! Anyway, we started listening to a bunch of stuff but before long we were only playing Happy. My wife has decided she likes "Ecto" the best, but I like 'em all! During a few Katesongs, I took out the bass and played along with "Running up that Hill". Lots of fun with that rhythm! Still perfecting "Ode", too. I need a band. Today I got a massive haircut and I am no longer long-haired. But my shoe size is still the same. That's my weekend thus far. Having a nice time, and enjoying all your posts, I remain your humble servant, Bob L. ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 5 Sep 93 3:25:48 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Hey Belay Bday HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Mike Mendelson!! The booking agent gave me these dates and venues off the top of his head, so I'm not sure if all the spellings are correct. Anyone planning to go (and yes, you should go) should call the venue for specific details. I'm *SO* glad I found out about this show, I wouold have died if I'd missed it (just like I nearly did a few months ago when I found out about Maddy Prior being in Chicago 2 days after the show :-(, she played at the same place Mary was at). What a wonderful show it was! Please go to this show, if you're in the general area of one of them. Mary's voice is in top form, it wraps itself around you and won't let go. Dark, smoky, wry Irish vocals. Mary Coughlin is from Ireland, but she doesn't sing "Irish" music. She's more akin to Billie Holiday and June Tabor. She can take any song written and sing it with her Irish voice and wry style and make the song completely her own. She sings everyone from Cole Porter to Elvis Costello and never ever sings a bad song. I was so excited to be at this show because I've been such a big fan for so many years, and I wasn't disappointed at all. She also tells great stories about some of the songs. It was wonderful to meet her after the show. I was so nervous but she was really nice and signed my LP of "Tired and Emotional." The LP is the first thing I got by Mary. It was given to me by my good friend Mike Lindsey, who used to work at a record store in Kansas City and who turned me on to so many great things such as The Innocence Mission, Yma Sumac, Mary, and many more. (He's the one who is now living in Los Angeles and is the bass player for Hex!) I was a bit embarrassed because the LP is a promo, so I told her that I owned all her CDs. Which I do now, since I bought the new one, a live album, tonight. If I can figure out a way to get to that Irish Festival and come up with the equipment to do it, and don't chicken out alltogether, I'll be able to interview her tomorrow night. I got these tour dates from the fellow who set up the tour. He was called by the manager of Tramps in NYC and asked if he could put together a tour. He'd never heard of Mary, but got to know who she was very quickly, and set up this tour in less than a month. That's why it was so sudden and why there aren't more dates on the tour. He's hoping to put together a more complete tour in a few months. I told him about my radio show and he asked me if I wanted to interview her! Yikes! I said yes, but it really is up in the air. Charley said he'd help me come up with good questions. I'm the world's lousiest interviewer, but to get to spend time with Mary Coughlin, I couldn't pass it up! Wish me luck (though it will be all over with by the time most of you read this.) I'll tell you how it all went. I really am terrified I'll screw it up somehow. I was so awful when I interviewed Happy, Betsy Martin (from Caterwaul) and Karen Peris (The Innocence Mission) that I pretty much swore off interviews, and passed up interviewing Lynn Canfield (with Area and Moon Seven Times) and Lisa Germano when I had the chance. Yikes! Chip and I are going out to the airport during the day tomorrow to meet Geoff "we're going to show him the Cool Thing at the airport" Parks, who has a 2-hour layover at O'Hare before going on from London to Nashville. I'm going to try and talk Chip into going to the Irish Fest :-) afterwards. Even if I don't do the interview I'd love to see the show again, because it was so great. I hope some of you can make it, even though it's such short notice. Later... AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!! Why can't things like this ever show up here??!!? Sometimes I really hate living where I live, no one I really like ever comes here...concerts involve an hour and a half drive (in the best case) which I guess isn't all that bad, but it'd be nice to not have to do that once in awhile. Not to mention the stupid law in this state that says if you're under 21 you can't go into a bar or club or any other place that sells alcohol *at all* (which the reason I had to drive 5 1/2 - 6 hours to see Tori last summer (well worth the drive though, and I didn't have to drive it all myself, 2 other ppl went with me :) )) Hopefully I'll get to see some of the concerts this fall, but it depends on what day they fall on and how far away they are and I'm not sure how optimistic I want to be about that. **bitch session off** :) While I'm here though, WRT MST3K, paraphrased from the Satellite News: Joel Hodgson will step down from his role as Joel Robinson in show #512. This week's show was #507 so we have a few weeks to go yet. #512 is the last with Joel, #513 is the first with the new character. I'm summer holiday now and going to Finland through Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Well, that's not exactly the shortest route, but I wanted to see the Alps. It was already snowing at 2000 metres. We made copies of Mari Boine and Varttina videos. Uli showed his _huge_ Kate colleKTion. At the moment we're copying some rare Kate videos for me. What a great way to start holiday. And if it rains next too weeks in Finland I have something to watch to :-) bye, Perttu This is Uli again. Well. My colleKTion isn't that big. I still know quite a lot of stuff that's missing from it... However, note the future tense here. I will make an official announcement when I have all of the listings and labels ready and have received my much over-due new cassette tape shipment. To whomever compiled the Finnish and Norwegian samplers, I lost the original list and Jens told me that the list may not have the songs in the correct order for those samplers. Could you e-mail the correct order of the songs, or just let me know if Jens' post was correct? (I think that the Norwegian list is correct). Thank you much! I would like to make one small correction, concerning Sanne Salomensen: "Dialog" ("Dialogue"), an early song I believe, [...] In fact, "Dialog" (a political song) is altogether tongue-in-cheek... When I first heard this while dubbing the master copy of the sampler, I had one of those "Wait a minute here!" experiences. Rummaging through the dusty recesses of my memory, I realized that "Dialog" is a cover of a song ("Dialogue") by Chicago, on their 1972 album _Chicago V_. I presume the lyrics were translated from English, and the music and even the alternating vocals follow the original Chicago arrangement very closely. The song lyrics definitely are satirical, probably even more so now, twenty-one years later. I personally would like to thank Dag, Kjetil, Jens, Perttu, Tommy, and Yngve for their efforts in putting this together. (What no ABBA? :) :) ) The Canadian sampler has a high standard to shoot for!
