I usually go by the nick fonz. I believe that I talked to Tim from Alberta, Yngve (of course!), and someone from Buffalo who went by the nick novice. For any of you ectophiles who get the Canadian all music station called MuchMusic, the Sugarcubes were featured in the Spotlight a few weeks ago. They played a bunch of old Sugarcubes videos, and some clips of old Sugarcubes interviews when they came to Toronto in years past. Obviously, most of the focus was on Bjork...and she is AWESOME!!! I was pretty lucky to have watched this show since I never watch MuchMusic or music videos. :wq -- Craig Rodrigues | "It's a Unix system....hey I know this!!!", Chemical Engineering, 1996 | stupid kid in _Jurassic Park_ University of Toronto | rodrigc@ecf.toronto.edu | ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 3 Sep 93 13:17:05 PDT From: kyrlidis@templeton.cchem.berkeley.edu (kyrlidis) Subject: RhodeSongs? Hi! Hmmm... I haven't been able to locate RS in Berkeley yet, and believe it or not I haven't had the time to find any envelopes to send H&K a letter ordering it. Would someone please post a description of the artwork and liner notes? All I have seen in my erratic skimming of the digests in the few minutes I spend here at work (so far :-)) have been reports of enthusiasm. Use spoiler alerts for the sake of ectophiles who want to be surprised... D^2 told me about the possibility of Bay area Happyness, and all I can say is wow! There is definitely room for Happyvangelizing here. I went to the Durant Av. Tower, and asked about RS, and of course the people there knew nothing about it. When I mentioned the "Happy is like KaTe and Annie Lennox singing a duet with instruments being either acoustic or all synthesized" everybody turned and said 'WoW!' and told me that they expect lines on Oct. 5th for KaTe's RS (what a coincidence! :)). Copperman Subject: Book o' Love Here's my one Book of Love experience. It was about 3 or 4 years ago, and I had absolutely no idea who Book of Love was. OHO, my favorite local band, was opening for them at Max's on Broadway in Baltimore. I was exceedingly happy to be on the guest list, because this Book Of LOve band was charging 20 bucks. Needless to say, I was quite curious who they were, and was even more puzzled to find the place packed with hordes of much younger than usual people (actually, they were probably the same age they usually were, but younger than the usual Max's crowd) all very well acquainted with BoL. Well, they came out, they were friendly, attractive, flipped there computer discs agilely and danced and gave us all candy, which seemed quite nice of them. As far as I can tell, everyone played computers with perhaps a brief tamborine interlude. When not dancing and smiling, they were quickly changing computer discs. The crowd was ecstatic. Actually, in retrospect I'd say that's as close to what I imagine a rave to be like as any show I've been to. Mostly the music was all very similar and nice enough, but didn't seem all that notable, but they were a huge hit. I left knowing who they were, but still pretty much baffled by the Book of Love experience. nealkl,k,k,k,mj (that's what it looks like when you are trying to clean spinach lasagna out of the keyboard, well, not the neal part of course.) ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 3 Sep 93 17:01:05 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (patrick swayze's evil twin) Subject: dead can dance tour dates hot off the presses! >Oct >20 Atlanta Roxy >22 Washington DC Lizner >24 Montreal Olympic >25 Ontario Muisc Hall >27,28 New York Town Hall >29 Boston TBA >30 Philadelphia TLC >Nov >2 Chicago Vic >4 Denver Ogden >7 San Fran Zellerbach >8 LA Royce hall >11 Seattle Moore >12 Vancour Vogue +woj ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 03 Sep 93 16:20:34 CDT From: Neuromancer/neurowomancer/neurobirthcer/you know the rest Subject: Stoff for September D**2 says: >As the Bruces once said, > >"We've come to the conclusion that your American beer is a bit like > making love in a canoe. > > It's fucking close to water." A friend just loaned me the new Pogues single, "Tuesday Morning." It's really quite miserable. I'll be the first to admit that Shane's boozing was out of hand and that he was dragging the Pogues down with him. But even at his worst, by the time of _Hell's Ditch_, he was still writing and singing superb stuff--the b-side, "The Bastard Landlord," f'rinstance, is one of my favorite Pogues songs! But this thing. ugh. For those interested, it's one of those kooky double singles. You buy 1 CD in a special digi-pak with spots for two CDs. Then you buy a *second* single to store in the case. Of course, each of the 2 CDs only has 3 tracks, so they're just ripping you off in the name of "limited editions." My friend only bought disk 1, for fairly obvious reasons. 1. Tuesday Morning Pretty boring. Further description defies me. 2. First Day of Forever Very boring. Soulless, in fact. 3. Turkish Song of the Damned Well, the band has some life to it. But Joe Strummer's lyrics are pretty dull. Shane MacGowan may have slurred and/or forgotten words, but when he screwed up a melody he screwed it up well. He pitch always had a nice range. Strummer just doesn't go up or down enough. I won't say it's monotonic, but it's close. And he can't scream. *No*one can scream like Shane MacGowan. FWIW, disc 2 also has "Tuesday Morning," as well as live versions of old Clash faves "London Calling" and "I Fought the Law" ---- Lest anyone think that this disc put a total damper on this evening, let me say that I started out the night by seeing the movie _The Wedding Banquet_ which was *superb*. I shall, for the moment, don my robes and crown, and be...yes...a net.goddess... My friends, if you are so very very lucky, if you are so very very blessed, to be within a days journey to one of the hamlets on woj's list, if the goddesses on high have given you such a gift, 'twould be a highlight of your entire existance upon this earth if you go see Dead Can Dance. As seriously as I can, without caps or stars to trivialize it, I urge you to go see Dead Can Dance. I can tell you without hesitation that it will be worth any amount of traveling, expenses, time and effort. Do not wonder. Do not hesitate. Do not ask why. It is, because it is, and because I say so. Because I know. Because I've been blessed myself with the pleasure of their performance. Because it was a highlight of my life. Because I've been in the same room as Lisa Gerrard, and because she sang. And she is an angel. And her voice will make your heart soar, and your soul shall be cleansed, and your mind will never let you forget that you were in the same room as Lisa Gerrard, and that she sang. My friends, my good friends, go. Ah geez, they better not be sold out. I'll be standing out in front of the Vic Theater, with tons of money and my first-born child (Adrian's got $600.00 worth of travel vouchers, he can come to Chicago :-) and I'll find him a cute little art student who isn't too snooty and who has a Juha in her name, well, even if she doesn't have a Juha...forget family tradition, this is Dead Can Dance we're talking about here!) and I'll not miss it for anything in the universe. (Not that Mary's trivial, just because I used caps and stars, but Lisa Gerrard is....oh my....is......an angel...) Heidi Berry is touring too? (Thanks Christine!) If anyone goes to that show, *PLEASE* get tour dates from her or the sound man or someone. Angels all around me...wow! 8 more days until WOMAD...8 more days, and I'll be in the presence of Sheila Chandra...to hear her sing in person for the first time and it shall be good. Something nice happened...I took a cab home and an Indian driver picked me up. I noticed that he had Indian music playing very low on the speaker and I asked him to turn it up please. He turned it up a little and I said turn it up more, crank it if you want to, I *love* this music! I don't know what it was, a soundtrack to an Indian film, be it was very nice. He was perplexed and asked me how I can enjoy the music when I can't understand the words being sung and I told him that I just loved the music and the sound of the voices and the tablas and sitars and the inflections of the voice and I didn't care at all what the lyrics were. (My motto generally is "if the music's good, who cares?" which is the way I feel about all music sung in a foreign language. Actually, in many if not most cases, it's better not to know the language. Banal lyrics will ruin the song for me. That's one reason why I *hate* to hear Ofra Haza sing in English. Or Najma. If I don't understand the lyrics, it can be the sappiest, soapiest, silliest love song ever written and I won't care one bit. On the other hand, if the lyrics are amazing I'd want to know. I can't imagine what it would be like if I didn't know any English and I heard Kate or Happy or Tori or Jane, since their lyrics are so great.) Anyway, we got to talking about music and I told him about my radio show and my love for female voices. Even after we got to my place I stayed in the car talking to him for at least a half-hour. We talked about Asha Bhosle (a hugely popular singer in India, mainly for her soundtrack work) and he said that his father was a music critic in India and has interviewed Asha. She has two sisters who also sing and are very popular. I asked him if the 3 had ever made an album together, but he didn't know. He'd never heard of Sheila Chandra or Najma. I told him about WOMAD and urged him to go. He likes Peter Gabriel too so he might go. Vickie ps, I saw "Boxing Helena" and "Kalifornia" tonight but I'll have to wait for another time to talk aobut them. One of them was somewhere between mediocre/ok and fairly good. The other was devestatingly effective. I'll hold off telling you which was which. ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 04 Sep 1993 15:19:48 +1000 (AEST) From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) Subject: Re: Cath Carroll In apana.lists.rec.happy-rhodes, article , you wrote: > I know this isn't really an ecto-related query, but I thought > I'd ask it here first before throwing myself to the wolves in > alt.music.alternative :) They'd probably just ask you what you thought of New Order live or something, anyway... :) > A Washington, D.C. band called Unrest > (which is pretty cool if you happen to like noisy-yet-tuneful > guitar rock) does a song titled "Cath Carroll" on their new > "Perfect Teeth" album. There is a photo of Cath on the cover, > taken by Robert Mapplethorpe, so she must be someone of note. > Any hints? Yup. :-) Cath Carroll was a journalist for the UK music paper New Musical Express for some years, and she eventually turned into a singer and recorded an album for Factory Records, called "England Made Me", which Factory shelved for a couple of years before finally releasing it in 1991. It's not brilliant but has its moments: Cath's voice sounds a lot like that of Deborah Harry, and the music had a distinctive latin feel in places. The best thing she released was the single "Moves Like You" which was remixed from the album by Martyn Phillips, the producer of albums by The Beloved and London Beat. If you see the album going out cheap, it's worth picking up. Cath's recording career vanished with the collapse of Factory, and while she's reportedly written new material, she has yet to sign with a label. Interesting album credits dept: Most of the album was recorded at the famous Blackwing Studio in London, and engineered and mixed by John Fryer (who has worked on many a 4AD album as well as bein one half of This Mortal Coil) and Eric Radcliffe (who owns the studio and for whom Yazoo named their debut album "Upstairs At Eric's"). Another part of the album was engineered in Chicago by - wait for it - Steve Albini, the alt.music.alternative golden boy of the month, who's produced the latest PJ Harvey and Nirvana albums. At the magazine I work for we've nicknamed him "Mr Feedback". :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au "I kind of feel like I'm Metallica..." - Tori Amos on the perils of long tours, November 1992 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 04 Sep 1993 15:32:42 +1000 (AEST) From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) Subject: Re: movies, but no Stephen King In apana.lists.rec.happy-rhodes, article <9309022022.AA06540@physics.Berkeley.EDU>, you wrote: > BTW, part of The Joy Luck Club was filmed right here at UC-Berkeley, > so you'll get a chance to see Our Fine Campus. I posted a couple of months back about a debut single by a Melbourne artist by the name of Margot Smith. Well, her second single is out on Monday here, to be finally followed by the delayed album, and it's *wonderful*! The single is called "Adored" and was produced and co-written by Steve Kilbey of The Church, who has produced hsalf the fothcoming album while Eddie "Split Enz Keyboardist" Rayner has done the other half. "Adored" is a straightforward pop song with jangly guitar and subtle sequencing work that sounds like just any other song until it sticks in your head for days. Margot's voice is in the lower registers for most of this song, with etheral backing vocals. There are two other tracks on the single; a non-album track called "The Curse" produced by Kilbey and rhythmically fascinating; and album track "Child", a soft acoustic song with a thunderstorm in Dolby Surround and some assorted keyboards, produced by Eddie Rayner. And if you haven't heard the b-side of the first single "Fall Down" yet (and I know you haven't, as it's only available in Australia!) - a song called "Just" - then you haven't lived!
