Mitch is right, an emotional core dump every now and then does help, especially when I know it's going to be ok with you and that the last thing in the world I have to worry about is getting flamed for opening my mouth, and that I do have lots and lots of friends here who do care. It's such a nice feeling. So very nice. Oooh! I just got a whole *lot* happier! kd lang won the MTV Award for Best Female Video. I was waiting for them to say "Janet Jackson" and about fell off my chair when they said kd. I really haven't been paying too much attention to the show, but I did see the live Soul Asylum. Victoria Williams was on stage with them, playing guitar, but she didn't have a microphone. It wasn't Victoria's song they sang anyway. Peter's "Steam" won for Best Special Effects. Some band I never heard of won New Artist and Aerosmith won over Peter for Viewer's Choice (ugh) Lenny Kravitz won over Peter for Best Male Artist. I missed everything else. Did Peter give an award out? Nice nice nice news for Chicagophiles. My verygoodfriend Charley called WCBR this morning and talked to the program director Tommy Lee (I think that's what his name is) and the guy *LOVES* Happy! All he's heard so far is the HR5 and fell head over heels. Charley told him "Happy's a friend of a friend of mine" and Lee thought that was pretty cool. Charley told him about Happy having 6 albums and he thought *that* was pretty cool! :-) Here's the *really* good part...Lee asked Charley if he could pass along a message to Happy, that if she ever wants to play in Chicago that WCBR will sponser it!!! (All together now....****YAY!!****) Charley called me but I was at work, so he called AG himself and Kevin answered the phone. Charley passed along the message and gave Kevin WCBR/Lee's address and telephone number. Lee also wants to set up a telephone interview with Happy, so we'll keep tabs on when that might happen. I'm sure that when Happy *does* play Chicago (it's so nice to be able to say that and use the word "when" instead of "if") she'll probably do an in-studio radio thang. It would be great to see her do an in-store too. This is so exciting for me, not having to worry about Happy skipping Chicago on a tour. This Tommy Lee fellow is a DJ too and he's on in the mornings. He told Charley that he'd play anything that AG sends him, so Kevin told Charley that he would send WCBR the catalog. Coolcoolcool!!! One more thing about WCBR, Jane's "Calling All Angels" is on medium rotation so any Chicagophiles who call to request Happy can request that too. Lee told Charley that Lisa Germano's "...Wear Dresses" was on their playlist but they dropped it because it got -zero- response, so listener feedback is definitely important to them. Still no sign of RhodeSongs and I'm *dying* to hear "Summer" and see the photos. I'll check the PO Box again tomorrow after work (I've been going there every night) before I go to the movies. (I'm going to see _Boxing Helena_ and I might go see _Manhattan Murder Mystery_ too, just because I might need a light comedy after seeing Helena.) Speaking of movies, Johnny hasn't checked back in with info about _The Piano_, but if I don't have my movies mixed up, I believe it stars Holly Hunter as an (autistic?) woman who can only communicate through her piano (???is that right???). I think Sam Neille (sp?) is in it too. All I really remember for sure is that it caused a sensation at Cannes, and that I *really* want to see it. It hasn't opened in Chicago yet. Has anyone heard when Gus Van Sant's _Even Cowgirls Get The Blues_ opens? I never was able to finish the book (maybe I'll try again after seeing the movie) but I'm looking forward to the movie because kd is doing the soundtrack and I'm curious to see what kind of role Victoria Williams plays, and if she gets to sing at all. I'm sure it's a small role, but it'll be cool to see her. (I'll be back...) Every year during the Labor Day weekend Kansas City throws a big party called the "Spirit Festival" that goes on for 5 days, starting today. The 'welders will be playing live during the fest. Unfortunately, today was rained out. When we lived in Kansas City Chris would often do Psychovideo for live shows, and they wanted him to do it again. What's Psychovideo? Well, Chris sets up a projector and big screen behind the band, hooks up his trusty Amiga and a VCR and various and sundry extra equipment and goes nuts doing weird psychedelic video effects that appear on the screen during the band's set. Our friend Kim put together a video tape full of strange clips from movies, documentaries, cartoons & other stuff, edited crazily, and Chris uses a genlock & D-Paint & other programs to manipulate, color, weird out and play around with what's on the tape. They used to use a video camera during part of the show too, with Kim filming the band and it showing on the screen and Chris making Rhondda look psychedelic too. It was always a lot of fun to attend the shows with Psychovideo. Chris always got a kick (read: laugh at) when black-garbed Art Institute students would come up to him between sets and marvel at his "genius" and his "art." Chris may well be a genius, but he'd snort at the "art" part because it was all so easy to do. Still, it always impressed the hell out of everybody and added a lot to an already great live band. I wish I could be there in Kansas City to see the Psychowelders and Psychovideo reunited once again. > Until (hopefully!) next time, XXXX <---fingers crossed Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 3 Sep 93 0:22:28 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: internet access > Sorry this hasn't got any ecto related info but can anyone suggest a cheap > way of getting internet access in Boston (just for email)? > tim There is a Public Access site in Boston called "The World" that offers e-mail and net access. If you want to know what it's like, listen to any other Book of Love album. In that respect they're like the Chagall of the music world... I went to a Chagall retrospective once, and was amazed at how his work varied not one iota in either theme, medium or choice of colors or style in the 70-odd years he was painting- he even repainted the same thing four or five times, in different sizes or color schemes, during various stages of his career (which were, to me, differentiated only by the year the work was painted). Book of Love is like that- listen to all their albums including the new one, and it will all sound the same. This is not to say, however, that what they're doing isn't enjoyable- I just wish they'd show a little bit of development beyond the technology they're using. Am I alone in this assessment? }> ECSTASY OF ST. THERESA: "Trance" (fluidtrance centauri EP) } }The name alone intrigues me.... where, who, which? (only kidding, }Meri! :-) Hey, two great tastes that taste great together. ;) Seriously, though, I was putting the station to bed for the night, and could think of nothing more fitting than "WH" to play as the last song, and since I always end with Kate, and "Runners" ended just in time to put a Kate song on before I finished up, it just happened that way. Especially not if you mean that all the electronic gear makes it easy to achieve the effects. The clever bit is knowing what you want. Getting that to be something worth somebody taking note of is the hard part. Comes easy to a genius maybe, but it's still art I reckon. Put me in charge of all that gear, and even if I knew how to drive it I still couldn't produce something worth looking at. This is due to a lack of artistic talent. Thousands of pounds worth of synthesisers and midi gear didn't make the crap I used to come up with music. In terms of the facilities provided by the equipment, and the ease of realising a vision, I had all I could need. Except vision. That's what distinguishes an artist IMO. And I reckon, from your description and from seeing the video he did for KaTe, Chris is definitely an artist.
