A fun night out. Talking briefly with her & John afterwards her English seemed to be surprisingly poor, about the same as my French (which is not saying a lot). John spoke to her in French throughout. I got them to sign my CD of John's guitar concerto with the LSO which also includes a few piano & guitar duets with him & Katia. Good stuff. Now Ofra Harnoy most certainly *IS* Canadian, but a strange bedfellow (musically) for the likes of Jane, Sarah, & k.d. lang. Please note, this is *NOT* a serious suggestion! She's come an awful long way since I first saw her back in 1976 when she was an out & out folk singer guesting at a local club. Whilst pondering the energy and time expended every week by dozens of the hundred+ ectotians individually trying to insure that a beloved artist's television appearance does not go by unnoticed, it occured to me that Happy has reached just about everyone she is ever going to sitting in my .plan and that perhaps a more beneficial purpose could be served. So, goddess and time willing, my .plan will consist of the scheduled guests on various shows for the upcoming week or so. It will be updated regularly as time permits, hopefully at least 3-4 days before the next week starts. Sorry non-US ectophiles. So, everyone, just finger rjk1@cec1.wustl.edu for a complete-as-possible- given-the-TV-Guide's-non-complete-guest-listings guest listing. bob ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 29 Sep 92 21:46:52 -0500 From: rjk1@cec1.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Subject: Juliana Hatfield I recall some discussion of said artist here not so long ago, but cannot seem to find much in the archives (I searched most of the digests 100-current) about her. (Where was she this summer when things were so dry?) Also perfect timing for the mega-expensive Arkansas Travelers tour to wander through with Michelle Schocked, Uncle Tupelo, and company. Sigh. So, can anyone supply a description (ick, I know, I hate describing music as much as anyone), and perhaps even word from someone who has seen her in concert. In addition to their classical and jazz work, they have done pop (they wrote and performed "Heart Like a Wheel," most famously covered by Linda Ronstadt). I think Connie Kaldor, who is played from time to time on the Midnight Special, may also be Canadian. I recently acquired an album of hers. I HAVE THE NEW PETER GABRIEL AND HAVEN'T LISTENED TO IT YET!!! *sob*sob* I'VE HAD IT SINCE 7:45 AM THIS MORNING!!! *sniff*sniff* Chris is working late, and i promised him that I wouldn't listen to it without him, and I'm keeping my promise. He would probably understand if I went ahead and listened to it, but I really don't want to. It's too important. Kate and Peter are the two Gods Almighty that we share the exact same level of love for. (See, he's not a Happy fan and I'm not a Todd Rundgren fan, for instance) That's ok, I'll stay up till 4am if I have to, because I can't go to bed without listening to it. Well, at least the tracks that weren't played the other night on the special. I still feel guilty for cheating on Kate. When Hounds of Love came out (in England) I was in New York and I bought an import copy the day it was released. I bought an LP, a CD and a cassette. Later that day I took the plane back to Kansas City and we listened to it that night, but immediately after I bought it I tore open the cassette and put it in my walkman. I listened to the entire first side before realizing how unfair I was being and took it out. When The Sensual World came out I got a promo cassette a few weeks before it was officically released. I got it during the day, on my lunch break actually. On the way back from picking it up I couldn't resist listening to some of it. I got through Love and Anger, The Fog and halfway through Reaching Out before guilt reared its ugly head :-) and I shut it off. (After we both got off work we were masochistic. Instead of going home right away to listen to it, we went out and had a nice steak dinner--yeah I know, Kate wouldn't approve--*then* came home, locked the door, turned the phone off, turned down the lights, turned the volume up LOUD--after having warned our neighbors that we were going to shake the rafters--and pressed PLAY. Ah bliss...) Hurry up Chris... Hey, thanks for the Celtic suggestions. I had to record my Chicago show tonight so I haven't read through the posts completely yet. I will, you bet. Have I said how much I *really* like the new Suzanne Vega? If not, I do!! Solitude Standing has always been my favorite, then #1. This one might possibly push SS out of 1st. It's awfully good, but too damn short! Many songs deserved to be much longer. So far, my favorite is Liverpool, which, for some strange, unknown reason, reminds me of a Hex song. I don't know why or which one. If I figure it out I'll let you know. Anyway, the songs are all good, but that one, the melody, just warms my heart and melts me. Doug, you may want to change the advertisement for "The Last Champagne Jam" to something like, "the last Champagne Jam of the Spring of `92", or something- there's going to be many more! (And if you're all good, I may tape another one for you. ;) The first installment of the fall season ocurred Sunday without too much incident (the world- famous Benjamin Artuso even made a guest appearance for half an hour ;). Next week I'll be better prepared, though... Vickie- in case you didn't get my direct e-mail, yes I did revive enough to watch Blue Man Group on Leno last week- thanks! I thought it was a repeat of their previous performance, though- It's great that he brought them back so soon... maybe this means they're actually going to release the album of their show? And also Vickie, they did have Psychowelders' _Inertia_ in the rack at WESU- I'm going to put a label on it and plug it all I can. Rhondda will be so proud of me. O:) Heard a report on Victoria Williams and her MS Friday morning on Morning Edition. It's really sad to see someone's career cut short like that, but she's fighting. She said she has started writing songs with open tuning, so she doesn't have to maneuver her hands as much. And there have been benefit concerts to help her with her mounting medical bills, including one recently in NYC which featured, among others, Syd Straw. I'm sorry I missed it. However, hearing a report such as that on an artist I'm sure no one among NPR's regular morning listeners has heard of only brought back to the forefront of my mind the certianty that this would be a key place to spotlight Happy... Gee, I should summarize NPR's news offerings for a living. On All Things Considered yesterday evening they spotlighted a NYC bar band called Drink Me, two really apathetic New York artsy types who play non-ambitious music about drinking and doing nothing. It was quite amusing. And this morning they supposedly did a piece on Peter Gabriel and _Us_, but not when I was listening. Anybody catch this? kIrI, nice to see you're still alive- Footah, are you??? ============================================================================= Meredith Tarr m.tarr1@genie.geis.com America can't survive another four years... fight the idiocy on November 3rd ============================================================================= ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 30 Sep 92 14:32:01 MEZ From: Dirk Kastens Subject: Suzanne Vega Hello, I saw Suzanne Vega last night on TV. She performed 99.9F in Gottschalk. She was *very* good-looking. Much nicer than on her album covers. :) But I must say, that I don't like her new stuff very much. I listened very briefly to her new album but I wasn't very pleased with it. My favorite SV album is Days Of Open Hand. It seems the era of daily shows has begun in Germany. Hans Meiser started his talkshow recently (every afternoon on RTL) and this week Thomas Gottschalk started his late night show (on RTL, too). He said in an interview that his idols are David Letterman and Arsenio Hall (no wonder, he is spending the summer in America). He seems to have very interesting guests in his show. John Strohm, guitarist and vocalist with Blake Babies, played drums for Lemonheads for a while. Evan Dando, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with Lemonheads, played bass and sang on some Blake Babies records, as well as on some of Juliana's new album.
