Mp ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1992 11:16:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Neile Graham Subject: Possible new tapes for dubbing project I was talking with Michael Peskura (well, emailing back & forth rather) and came up with the idea of doing 2 new tapes for the dubbing project: a Canadian femme collection (Dalbello, Ferron, Siberry, M+M, McGarrigles [maybe], McKennitt, McLachlan, etc.), and a Celtic folk femme collection (Altan, Capercaillie, Sandy Denny, Pentangle & Renbourne Group, Steeleye Span, Prior & Tabor, Linda Thompson, etc.). I guess I want to run the idea by everyone and see if I should: --Doug, do you mind handling them? --Vickie, you've got better equipment for this than I have (esp. considering your last post). Do you have the collection to do these and would you want to? --Does anyone have a wonderful collection of either of these and want to do them? My collection is rather idiosyncratic, e.g. I find enya too smooth and don't own any of her music and so she wouldn't be represented on the Celtic tape. --Is there anyone really obvious that I've missed who should be on the lists--besides enya, I mean ;) ? --Would anyone be interested in *having* these tapes? --Should we maybe not be overwhelming the dubbing project with new non-Happy-related material? Anyway, if you could email me and/or ecto and let me know I'd appreciate it. If there is any interest I will go ahead and do them. Maybe we can talk Michael into doing a sample Seattle music tape. --Neile, who has two warpaint stripes down her cheek, courtesy of a wild cat she caught. It is a 2-hour show, and I presume it will be broadcast elsewhere as well. In Chitown, it is either on the Bear (92.7) or the Loop (97.9) but I can't quite remember which. 10pm. If someone gets a good dub of this, perhaps they will share? -mjm ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Re: RADIO ALERT -- Peter Gabriel US Date: Thu, 24 Sep 92 18:19:28 EDT Eeeeeeeep! Anybody know if/when this will be broadcast elsewhere? This is probably a 'network'-thing, since (with all due respect to the Chicago chapter of ecto) I don't think any *one* radio station would get such exclusive rights!!!!! Please, e-mail or post any relevant info, or even post-broadcast impressions, quotes, etc. I hope someone tapes this! Should I go to see Tribe, or should I miss them for the nth time and hope that this will be broadcast in Boston? That is the question... Sorry, I can't quote from your post (shuffle, clears throat, shuffle shuffle, clears throat chip oh chip oh hint hint hint cough cough) but I remember the gist of them. A Canadian and a Celtic (hey, a great album title if Sarah or Jane were to team up with, oh, Capercaillie or Enya or somebody.) I can certainly do at *least* a couple of Celtic tapes, and I don't even have everybody you mentioned (Altan was one) but the Canadian tape would be harder to fill up a tape, unless I had multiple songs from each, or a few, of the artists, and I have no problems with doing that. You forgot kd lang, she'd definitely be on there. I don't have any Ferron at all (I've never even heard her) but I think I can handle everybody else you mentioned. (Uh, M&M? Martha & the Muffins?) The Cowboy Junkies would be on there too. And, of course, Loreena and Sarah would be on there, they're the stars, along with Jane! Who else are we forgetting? (Or that maybe I don't know about?) OH OH OH >>> ** MARY MARGARET O'HARA ** !!!!!! How could I forget? Sheesh! I have Marielle and Katia Lebeque (sp? Too lazy to go dig it out) Aren't they Canadian? I have the McGarrigles, no problem. Dalbello is covered (I played "Immaculate Eyes" on my Chicago and Kansas City shows already. Thanks again Neile!) but I only have a single by Martha and the Muffins, if that is who you were talking about. The Canadian tape would be a breeze to keep to "genre," but the Celtic is a bit more iffy. If I do a tape, I would say in advance that I'm *not* a purist, so groups like Mouth Music would be on there too, as would Kate, either "The Handsome Cabin Boy" or(/*and*) "My Lagan Love." Actually, "My Lagan Love" would *definitely be on there, because I would team it up with "Quiet Joys of Brotherhood" by Sandy Denny (same song, different version and name, and lyrics, maybe I should have said...same music) and I would probably throw in songs such as "Ireland" by Marianne Faithful and "moonflower" by blackgirls. Loreena could be on that tape too, so could Americans such as Liz Carroll, Cherish the Ladies, Sylvia Woods and Boiled In Lead (one of the songs with Laura Mackenzie and/or Jane Dauphin) plus, if I can find it, Connie Dover (??-pooh, I *think* that's her name. I should know too, because she's in a Kansas City group called Scartiglan.) Ooooh, this kind of thing gets me going, because I start thinking of all *kinds* of things to add. I really could do 2 100 minute tapes without even thinking about it. Heh, right now I'm listening to a song by Bobo in White Wooden Houses (that's the name of the group, really. Bobo is the lead singer. It's one of the things that Klaus and Claudia brought me) that's a rock song, but the lyrics and the melody of the lyrics are a traditional Irish song. Sheila Chandra has a song on her new album (hunt it, find it, buy it, bliss out and enjoy. Go to heaven, do not pass go, do not collect $200.00. Shell out, whatever it takes. So say I, so it is written...) that combines an Irish theme with an Indian theme. "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day" by The Pogues (sung by Caitlan) would have to be on there. Surely Penelope Houston...I could go on and on. Well, my tape's 'r done :-) so if a *truly* tradional Celtic tape is wanted, I can't do it. Something else I have, though it's in sad shape, so if anyone has a *very* good recording of it, perhaps I could beg a tape from you, is Siohban McKenna (sp? again) reading Molly's speech from Ullyses (Jorn will kill me if I mis-spelled that, which I probably did) and, on my show, I've mixed from the last few minutes of it right into Kate's "The Sensual World." (Non-kate fans, that's what Kate's song is based on, but she had to change the lyrics because the Joyce estate wouldn't give her permission to use the Joyce text.) This will be *fun* (but then, they *all* are) so if anyone has something that absolutely, positively *has* to be included and you think I don't know about it, please e-mail me. Perhaps you could send a tape--I love hearing new music, especially Celtic music. I have Silly Sisters. I have Triona. Noirin is covered. I have Skara Brae. I have lots of others that I can't remember right off hand. Hmmm, Touchtone, Pentangle, Macalla...others. Would you believe I used to *loathe* female Celtic singing? Strange, but true. (remember me? I'm the one who didn't like Dead Can Dance the first time I heard them and who scorned Tori. pfft!) On a completely different note, Aster Aweke was supposed to be here last week, well, 2 weeks ago, and she cancelled, the day before the concert. At least she gave some notice. The last time she was supposed to be here she called the venue the day *of* the concert and cancelled! I will grow old and die before I get to see that woman live, I swear! Grrr!! Michelle Shocked is out for us...too expensive. I've never seen her live either, danm. kd lang is a no-go too. Tickets are $38.50!! (Thirty-eight dollars and fifty cents!!!! *EACH*!!!! Ugh!) At least, we've seen her before. I've seen her twice, Chris once. Alas, the day when kd lang is too high-brow for the likes of us is a sad day indeed. :-( (Of course, we'd actually take out a bank loan to fly to England to see Kate in concert, but, as much as I like kd, she ain't Kate.) MJM, thanks for the Peter tip. We'll be taping, if we can figure what station it's on. There was an article about Peter and a review (3 stars) of the album in today's Chicago Tribune. Sinead sinead sinead sinead SINEAD You want suggestions: Jackie from TLATC, I am stretched on your grave from IDNWWIHNG, Irish laws and Irish ways from the silent night single, AND last but *not* least Scarlet ribbons (a haunting song accompanied by a Tin whistle, and Uillean pipes) from Am I not your girl? Angelos PS. Tribe were amazing (that's no surprise). They played about 7 new songs (some of which were mindblowing: 'Supercollider' and another one where she sang through a bullhorn were the best). But I feel bad about the show because they didn't play Abort :( I guess, I'll *have* to see them again! :) It was kind of unusual to see them where I saw them -outdoors, under the government center building, with natural smoke effects from the surrounding ribfest (yum! :))- but they were worth it!! It was cold but things heated up after the first song, when a slamdanceathon started...It was fun to watch. He's talking about WOMAD. How much did I miss? ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 24 Sep 92 22:35:54 EDT From: woj Subject: blue man actually vickie, you did wake me up. i had dozed off, while making a happy sampler for a love-hound, on the (you guessed it) living room floor. while i wasn't as disoriented as meredith...it did take me a few moments to fig- ure out what the heck was going on... :) but i did tape the performance...and i shall attempt to describe it for those who missed it. they did a seriously abridged version of the show that they've been performing in manhattan for the past year or so (called "tubes"). they began with a couple drumming segments. the first had each member behind am opaque screen with light shining on them from behind so that you could only see a silouette of the person. as each person started thier drumming, the light would turn on and as soon as they finished, it would go off leaving the blank screen. the third person also smoked a cigarette and slugged some drink from a bottle as he played (the silouette of the cigarette smoke was somewhat amusing). the second drumming segment had the men standing in front of large drums looking like oil barrels, except that the top edge of the drumwall extended a few inches above the head of the drum. one of the men played both drums while the other two poured red and yellow paint (or at least i think it was red and yellow - i have a b&w tv) into the "pan". this paint got sprayed all over the place as you can imagine. the other two also held a canvas above the paint spray, thus creating "art" (in the actual show, the finished canvas was put on an easel and given a price tag of $400, but they did not do this in the tv performance). finally, they closed with a music segment, where they showed off the pvc pipe organs that i had talked about before: basically, pvc of differing length and shape (using elbows and the like) hammered on the open end by a flat surface (such as a shoe sole) makes a really neat noise. make enough pvc sections and you can make an instrument, which they played (along with their band) to the amusement of the crowd (complete with florescent jello coming out of their mouths). the complete show is about a hour and a half long and features more of this kind of weirdness. highly recommended if you get the chance to see them. they have already toured this show (from what my understanding of their work is), but perhaps they will take it on the road again after the seem- ingly successful tonight show appearances (and attending publicity). woj ======================================================================== Date: 25 September 1992 14:37:57 CDT From: Subject: Chicago stoff Just now remembered that Vickie had encouraged me to explain what the quip about rivers that leak and bridges that fall up was about. By now, most of you are probably familiar with the incident with the under- ground freight tunnels, in which during the replacement of bridge pilings, some were inadvertently driven through a tunnel wall, aggravating existing cracks and allowing the Chicago River (under which the tunnel in question ran) to flow in and flood a variety of downtown basements, throwing the local economy into confusion for weeks. The latest glitch in the infrastructure happened when a section of the Mich- igan Avenue bridge, which has been under repair for over a year, suffered a failure of the raising and lowering mechanism, causing it to abruptly go to a vertical position from which it cannot be easily righted. The cause of all this has yet to be pinned down. Miraculously, no one was killed and few were injured. The most notable occurrence of its kind was when a crane was pushed out of position, and a wrecking ball was sent flying, finally lan- ding in the backseat of a car parked across the street (it's still there). In this context, it perhaps should not be considered anomalous that Chicago has now become the city where one dose of worm medicine can prove sufficient to kill a whale.
