The earlier one (which I think is eponymous) has the classic song, "Birth Control and Beer." I just wanted to make an announcement about a possible Ectoparty in Chicago. As many of you know, Klaus and Claudia are coming to the U.S. for their holiday. Their last stop (after Florida and Boston) will be to Chicago. They will be here Sept. 14. If any of you are going to be (or can be) in the area during that week, let me know. I don't want to set a date/time yet until I know what Klaus & Claudia want to do and who will be around when. If you'll need a place to stay, let me know. Michelle and I have lots of room. The paper gave this record 3.5 stars, calling it a more interesting disk than Tori, Sophie or Sarah. It called the lyrics "beat poetry without the pretensions...vivid and colorful." It conclude s by calling Husik "one female singer-songwriter who's influenced as much by Patti Smith as Joni Mitchell." The review immediately following is of "The Best of Mountain Stage, Vol. 3 Live " on Blue Plate. It has acoustic songs by Sarah McLachlan, the Cowboy Junkies, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Warren Zevon, Marshall Crenshaw, et al. It is also view ed with favor by the critic. What I didn't know before I read the review is that Mountain Stage is a live, eclectic radio show on APR (the same public network that has World Cafe). Soun ds to me like a vehicle that organized Happyvangelism would do well to keep in mind. I forgot to mention last week that the last feature in the September _Q_ is an interesting interview with Sinead O'Connor (whose hair is pictured growing back in). I got my copy for U$5.95 at a B.Dalton store in downtown Chicago; if this chain has an outlet where you are, it would be worth stopping in. I just got to listen to the HGP '91 (thanks Doug!), and it's neat to hear some voices to attach to the names! Some very interesting music there too. So I have come up with a new project, the ECTO INDEX. I have been reading over the ecto archive since I joined ecto in March, and have finally caught up. One thing that really kept my interest up was all the different artists that were discussed. Now I wish I had been keeping notes on all of them. Anyway, after some reflection, I have decided to try setting up an Ecto Index service. I have a list of many artists already, mostly from the Femme tapes and other compilations which have been available in Ecto, and also some from postings, but if you could do me a big favour and send any lists of artists you remember being discussed at some point or another, especially the more obscure ones, I'd greatly appreciate it. I assume this list will grow as people make requests also. Also, if you want to do a search on the archives, or a copy of the master index, just let me know. I haven't written any scripts yet but I hope to be able to do fairly thorough searches on all the digests. Alan Ezust says in Digest.322: >First post to Ecto from my new flat in Montreal... Welcome back to the GWN, Alan! ------- And big happy birthdays to Dan Segel today, Jorn Barger in between today and tomorrow, and Meredith Tarr tomorrow! ------- In Ecto, Tim (tim@lisd.uucp or tim@cs.ualberta.ca) ======================================================================== Subject: Re: yo! I was loaned a CD with "The Playhouse" and "The Imaginary Heart Of" on it. I based my one-woman band comment on "All songs performed by Julianna Towns with contribution by William Sassenberger." To me that implies that it's pretty much just her. The only reference to Mark Erskine in the liner notesis that he wrote the intro lyrics to "A Thousand Lessons." Her vocals are darker than the Happy's, but I'm not sure the music is much darker. Jeff ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 31 Aug 92 22:13:57 EDT From: Vickie Mapes Subject: Lapsed Ectophiles ...are Dan Segel & Jorn Barger, (in other words, they're not on the list anymore) but Happy Birthday anyway. In case I'm not around tomorrow, have a VERY *HAPPY* *BIRTHDAY* Meredith! I've fallen woefully behind on reading and I apologise if I've missed anything I should have answered, but here's a couple of 'em: Valerie, I think I said pretty much all of what Happy wrote on my birthday card, she thanked me for the birthday message, she's behind on her correspondence because of work on the album and hopes that she can get back to everybody. She received a lot of nice cards for her birthday and I know she appreciated them, and she wished me a happy and peaceful day for my birthday. (I hope you understand that I'd just feel too weird if I quoted it outright) The card she sent was really cool, with a strange, weirded-out sun on it (no, it's not a Happy drawing like last year) and it came from "Happy Life Productions" (P.O. Box 687, Woodstock, NY) though, as far as I know, Happy has nothing to do with it. The painting is by Michael DuBois (c) 1987 and is called "Sunface." Mike Mendelson, my show has changed times in Chicago. It's now on at 7:30pm-8:30pm Wednesdays. Chris and I saw the Peter Gabriel video too last night (plus I taped the Sinead video and the Breeders' videos & interview) and we were "transfixed" (to steal Steve VanD's phrase, which is a perfect word to use for Tori's concert!) The video *was* very disturbing! Remember the opening sequence of _Blue Velvet_ with the bugs and things fighting beneath a happy, sunny sky? It's kinda like that. Sort of....well....hmmmm. There's a *LOT* of anger and rage in the video, that you don't get just listening to the song. I would bet that he had a lot of creative input into the video, because it seems to be about (literally and symbolically) his anger at his wife and Rosanna. Then again, it might not be autobiographical at all, but, knowing Peter's history with both women, I'd say it was. Be prepared for lots of bugs, including maggots, clinging vines, death imagery, and even Peter hitting a woman! Yikes! It has a "happy" ending, but yes, through most of it, I'd say "disturbing" is a good word to use. WHO, by the way, is doing the HBP? Doug? I offered, but Greg turned me down. Greg? It occurred to me that Happy probably thinks *I'm* doing it, since I did the HGP, and I can't imagine what she's thinking of me :-). So I just wanted to tell her where things stand with it. It never was a suprise, she has known about it for months, so I won't be giving anything away if I mention it. I already apologised to Greg, and now I'll apoligise to everyone else: I am sorry that my personal problems prevented me from taking on the HBP. I don't place any blame, or guilt trips, on Greg. It was a really bad time for him, what with moving and starting a new job and all, so I take full responsibility for the delay. I *will* be doing the HGP'92, so no one else has to worry about it. (And, by gum, the deadline will be *November 1, 1992* so we won't have to worry so much about the Christmas mail rush, which caused so many problems last year.) So, who's going to tape the WXPN benefit????? I've been lapsing on Ecto myself lately, not that I don't think y'all are interesting, because you are, and I do. But I've been focusing on some other things recently, Hurricane Andrew (I have relatives in Florida-they're ok, they lived north of the worst part.) and Politics (I've been spending a lot of time in the political newsgroups and talk.abortion) plus reading more printed works (Mitch loaned me Al Gore's book...thanks Mitch!!) So, I'm here, but I'm pretty much ecto for now. I'll probably get involved with Clinton's camapign within the next couple of weeks, so I might be totally preoccupied until after the elections. We'll see. I'm much more of a procrastinator than Greg, because I still haven't finished the Helen Light transcription. It's half done, but everytime I get ready to back to it, something comes up. Blah! I have the tape *almost* ready to send Doug, so don't give up on that either. I've been holding off on some things because I need to get a new cassette recorder. Soon, I hope (she says, with her fingers crossed and her face scrunched up) Oh, we've also been going to more movies. Last week I saw _Enchanted April_ and _Mistress_ (thumbs up!) and Saturday night we went to see _Fire Walk With Me_ (the Twin Peaks movie) which I didn't like as I was watching, until the last half hour, but the more I think about it, the more I *do* like, not *just* the last half hour. Like all things Twin Peaksy, it needs to be seen more than once, I think, to appreciate. We'll definitely be going to see it again. Main thoughts: if you haven't seen *any* of the TV show, you will be totally lost. (Actually, if anyone goes who did not follow the show, I'd be *really* interested in hearing what you thought of it) Second, It doesn't top, nothing ever will, the Pilot episode. Still, when it comes out on video, I'll be looking forward to watching it at the beginning of a marathon TP session, since it is a prequel. I don't think it lives up to all the hype that Twin Peaks *fans* were giving it, but it does work very well as another episode of the series. As such, it will die a quick death at the theaters (there were only 20-30 people at the theater we went to) because it's just not meant for anyone other than hard-core TP fans, and there are very few of them (us) left. Now I know why it got such a schitzo reaction at Cannes.... Oh, and Goddess bless the Japanese... Next movie on the agenda: _A Brief History of Time_. It's the docuwhatevermentary about Stephen Hawking and his book. Vickie ======================================================================== From: Martin Dougiamas Subject: Today. I missed another birthday. Though it's a bit late, it's no less sincere! I hope you had a warm fuzzy blue Happy HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dan Segel. Fortunately, I'm not too late to accord a similar but much more timely warm fuzzy blue Happy HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Meredith Tarr (whose computer is generating bounce messages on Ecto from her digests in its own excited celebration :) ). Enjoy your day! I know she isn't an Ecto artist, so I'll just make it a short note. A week ago, I saw Melissa Etheridge put on a great and fun concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver. (How much shorter a review can you get!? :) ) If any of you ever have a chance to go to a concert there, or even just see the place, do so. I can't see how any outdoor venue could top it. The amphitheater was carved out of the surrealistic red rock hogbacks which distinctively mark Colorado's Front Range. Behind the stage, the city lights of Denver (and that evening a number of distant lightning storms) added quite a view. The sound was amazingly good, clear all over the amphitheater. Of course, there is that one problem with outdoor concerts. I joined the millions who can say, "I got rained on at Red Rocks". (Fortunately, it stopped before the show started). The opening act (Jeffrey Gaines, one of those oh-so-sincere folk-rock singer-songwriters) had the best line of the night. "You know, when it was raining earlier, and you all were wearing your different colored raincoats, and with the way this place is built, you all looked like a box of Crayolas". [I guess you had to be there. :) ] Maybe someday Happy will play Red Rocks. Sigh! Well, you didn't think that _I_ would let Hurricane Andrew pass without comment, did you? Apparently no Ectophiles were in its direct path, with only Kiri (and maybe Valerie) apparently anywhere near it. However, my brother lives in Miami Beach, and I talked with him last Thursday. He considered himself very lucky, as he only lacked electricity, and was discovering which foods can stand not being refrigerated and trying to survive the 90 degree heat and 90 percent humidity without air conditioning. He also worked a 32hr shift as a nurse at his hospital at the height of the storm. Yet he is not complaining, as his gas, water, phone (sort of), and house were all sound. On the other hand, over half of his friends lost their homes in the winds. Just his next door neighbor's house was crushed by a fallen tree. For me, his phone call was a sobering reminder of the human side behind the numbers in the news and in our weather observations. Of course, such stories always seem to overwhelm important news in Fort Collins! :) Do you realize a tropical storm hit here at the same time? I hear you say, "You're nuts! Fort Collins is light years away from the nearest ocean!!" That is true, but so is my statement. The remnants of Pacific tropical storm Lester hooked up with a cold front and slowly moved over the area. When it neared the Four Corners, we had every necessary condition for prolonged heavy rain in Fort Collins. It delivered, as 2.13in of rain fell over two days. Believe it or not, that is about one-eighth of our average annual precipitation. Believe it or not, that is more rain than Miami Beach saw from its hurricane. Of course, you didn't see a peep about this in the news. :) Saturday, I played my first CD Happy marathon. Pure enjoyment, of course, though I'm still getting used to those extra songs on each album. Anyway, not too long ago, we had a short thread about the best stretch of songs in a Happy album. After my latest splurge, I would go for the first six (yes, count 'em, six) songs on _Rearmament_. Jens and Meredith, both of you have said you were going to make tape orders, but I haven't heard the details. Jens, you sent me the money, but not what tapes you wanted. Meredith, vice versa. And so am I. I bought it last Friday without listening to it before. Starting my CD player, I was surprised. It sounds indeed different, maybe it's the influence of Daniel Lanois (although he produced _So_, too). But the rough and bumping mix sounds similar to U2's _Achtung Baby!_ (The Fly). Peter made two steps back and five forward. On the third song of the single, _Quiet Steam_, a 6:30 minutes ballad, he sings like on _Mother of Violence_ of his second album. The song is based on a repeating hypnotic rhythm pattern that increases by degrees. I suppose, _Digging in the Dirt_ is about his relations with Sinead O'Connor. Take a look at the cover (an ink drawing of funny creatures and faces): doesn't the upper face look like Sinead and the lower face like Peter? Doesn't Sinead sing the bvox in the chorus (Digging..., very low)? And pay attention to the lyrics: 1. Something in me / Dark and sticky All the time of getting ????? The way you're dealing / With this feeling Can't go on like this too long Bridge: This time you've gone too far (3x) I told you (4x) Chorus: Don't talk back / Just drive the car Shut your mouth / I know what you are Don't say nothing / Keep your hands on the wheel Don't turn around / This is for real Digging in the dirt Stay with me, I need support (?) Digging in the dirt Find the places ???? ???? Open up the places ???? ???? 2. The more I look / The more I find As I ???? ???? / I got so blind I feel it in my head / I fell it in my toes I feel it in my sex / That's the way it goes Bridge: Chorus: (Maybe someone is able to replace the question marks and email the lyrics back to me???) I play this singles at least three times each day and can't await the forthcoming album. :-) Dirk ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 1 Sep 92 12:28:27 EDT From: waite@andromeda.rutgers.edu Subject: The Twin Peaks Movie Vickie, I was thinking of you last night and in your honor watched the Twin Peaks movie.
