I think I've succeded with my efforts to bring Happy up among the well known artists here at the university. At least here in this building. Last weekend we were at a place called "Skibotn" about 3-4 hours drive outside Tromsoe and had a wonderful time. But the most wonderful was that Happy's RhodeSongs was considered among the other CDs when some friends of mine were going to choose music to play......In the end the three albums considered were DCD's Aion, Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes and RhodeSongs (all CDs brought by me personally :) and Happy won!!!!!!!!!!!! The next morning I was responcible for making breakfast (together with three others) so I used the opportunity to play Happy again and it was a incredible experience to eat breakfast and listening to RhodeSongs (and noone objected:) Regards, -- T ---- Only In Your Eyes Lies Your Soul.............. I wrote back explaining my (and Vickie's) role(s) as semiofficial liasons, and added that in all probability, most of ecto would prefer not to see Happy post and read regularly. This encourages open and varied discussion. We shall see what transpires. I am still pinching myself that the Phillies are going to be in the World Series. Torontophiles, may the best team win! It was the only thing they had by her. My recommendations were offered simply to new listeners (that was the "neophyte Ectoids"). Of course if you like those, you'll have to have the rest. But I don't think people are going to run out and buy the whole catalogue at one shot, never having heard ANYTHING, which was the status of the guy who'd posted the most recent query. {Not that it suits me to propose moderation in anything, much less record buying.} I also think he's most likely to find those two currently. I have read a lot of people on this list discussing how they have to budget what they spend on music. I'm just tossing out my two cents and trying to keep that in mind. ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1993 8:59:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Sampson Subject: Welcome to the Beautiful South Does anyone know anything about the band/album called "Welcome to the Beautiful South"? Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1993 09:28:06 -0500 (CDT) Just mild whining and high ellipsis content... I just got notified that I was going to be evicted for having the gall to own a little fluffball meower. Wonderful gestapo type tactics, banging on my door in the early morning when I'm still asleep and serving me with papers. I suppose that will show me that since I've been so good at following all the rules all my life, I am now incapable of properly breaking one. A friend has offered to take my cat until I find a new apartment (I'm allowed to "remedy the situation" within 10 days and stay in my place, but I can't give up my best friend, can I?). My question is: do any of the Chicago Ectophile contingent know of any reasonably-priced-for-a-graduate- student, yet safe, studio-type places that allow cats? Preferably in the north/near north area (I go to school at ~700 N Lake Shore Drive). Just a long shot, I do have a lead. I'm just a little upset and not thinking terribly straight about it right now. Someone had kept 2 cats in the building and let them wander the hall for 2 years and no one ever did anything, so I figured I was safe, and wasn't going to have to move from my furnished apartment one block from work. *sigh* Maybe because I'm so upset, the people at work will let me listen to my own music (Kate & Happy) today and not complain. It's worth a try. Thanks for letting me gripe/sob/complain to you. I even manged not to put dots in. :) Kath ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 14 Oct 93 09:38:58 CDT From: Courtney Dallas Subject: last of the Kate Posters.. Sorry's again to those who responded too late. A note to Christine Kennel: did you send a check or money? I dont remember receiving it! A note to Philip: I will send out your poster on Friday. I seriously doubt that any banks in Armpit, Alabama will be able to exchange your NZ (cool!) money, so I will simply keep a fiver until i get back to civilization. Be watching your mail in a week or two. To everyone else: I hope you like your posters! And I also hope all have been received. Thanks to Albert and Stuart for their thanks...it was my pleasure to spread the gospel of KaTe! I wish i had more posters to give away but unfortunately, i dont. I haven't heard the whole album yet, but I do own a promo (which cost me $2- What a bargain!) called "Advance Music from Titanic Days" which has "Angel," "Bad," "Can't Stop Killing You," "Soho Square," and "Titanic Days" on it. If the rest of the album is as good as these 5, then you must listen to the CD immediately! It is the "typical fresh pop of Kirsty" as woj said. "Angel" is very reminiscent of "Walking Down Madison," although "CSKY" is the one that was co-written w/ Johnny Marr. But it's "Soho Square" and "Titanic Days" which really hooked me. They were written with Mark E. Nevin from Fairground Attraction, and they're both extremely catchy and beautifully orchestrated. Anyway, I'd love to know how the rest of the album compares. I almost bought it yesterday, but I ended up with Sarah McLachlan's _Touch_ instead. I wonder how I have survived with just _Solace_ for so long. I *love* this album, and I'm now waiting anxiously for the new one. While I was picking up _Touch_, I listened to bits and pieces of _Into the Labyrinth_ at the Tower listening station, and I am now coveting that CD. Copperman Subject: sorry Story, BS raves Yesterday I was trying to convince my room mate to get tickets to see the Story, which I had decided to do even though I hadn't heard any of their music. Well, by happenstance, I picked up "angel in the house" the day before, so I put it on, figuring it would make the case for itself. I was surprised that it practically discouraged me from going. I'll certainly listen to it again, and no telling what I will think in the future, but this first cursory listen did nothing for me. The voices seemed unexceptional and the songs didn't really stick with me. Didn't have a chance to look at the words though. Any words of encouragement to lure me to the show? I did see music I liked last night though. I was really wowed by Bettie Serveet. I picked up their disc too, but didn't have time to listen to it before the show. I had read that every song had the same structure, starting relatively slow and building to a crescendo. I'm not sure if that was a complaint, but it didn't bother me at all. After all, it's just the odd structure that was noticeable. Who comments when an album is full of songs that go verse-chorus-verse-chorus. Anyway, I thought they were a really hot live band. The simple drumset was really sharp and cut right through the music. Bass and guitars would layer and layer and layer as the songs progressed, getting wilder and faster, but always maintaining a rhythmic intensity. I felt some vocal phrases reminded me of the Sundays, but I think I have Sundays on the brain. I'm not even that huge a fan, and they seem to be in my comparisons to everyone. The crowd loved them and they seemed really happy and surprised. The funniest part of the show was the drum solo. The drummer got all geared up to start going crazy, hit the skins a few times, and then one of this drumsticks slipped from his hand and flew across the stage. He seemed so surprised that he had absolutely know idea what to do, and the band joined back in. Someone yelled out "Best drum solo ever" and he smiled and gave us the thumbs up sign. THis happened to him again a few minutes later, and the band picked up the drumsticks and threw them at him. Anyway, I was really impressed with their show. Opening was the Verlaines, who were louder and rowdier than I expected. They were ok, but sounded nothing like their discs. I almost felt it was a different band. They are lyrically interesting, which was certainly not obvious at the show. Closing was Bufallo Tom, who were milder than I ecpected, though I've never heard them. The testosterone in the air got to thick and I had to leave early, but I was starting to grudgingly like them by then. I'll be on the road to the Grand Canyon this time tomorrow :::::-) Neal ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
