Why, I don't know. There's better music to be had for those who want to look for it... I went along to see Margot Smith at a dreadful pub called Arcadia on Thursday night; one of those ones where everyone completely ignores the poor performer and instead has high-volume discussions on the merits of the Olympic bid. With no proper amplification, Margot and her two acoustic guitarists (one of whom was Michael Wade, who co-wrote a lot of the album) were all but drowned out by drunken rambling. Afterward, I cornered Margot to buy her a beer and thank her for the album, and she insisted on buying me a beer to thank me for the review of said album, so as with all beer-buying escapades, a long conversation followed, and now Margot knows all about Ecto, and asked if I could do a tape of some Happy for her. I did a quick compilation the next day, and took it in to the Cherry Tree where she was playing Friday night. This time a proper PA was provided, and Margot was absolutely brilliant; there's something about her voice that can't be described in words. The set was the same both nights, and for those of you with the album, they were (not in order); Fall Down, Adored, How Do You Sleep, Life Time, Bellyman and Child, with a cover of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" thrown in for good measure. The Happy tape I gave her was compiled in a really big hurry at 4 in the morning, and only includes bits from the three most recent albums; essentially, I ran out of time, and instead put most of the Moon Seven Times album on the other side. The running order of the Happy side was - and this was not planned, just chosen on whim - Feed The Fire, The Flight, Cohabitants, Closer, To Live In Your World, Words Weren't Made For Cowards, Lay Me Down, Warpaint, and When The Rain Came Down. I'll relay any comments from Margot next time I speak to her. Oh by the way, Philip Sainty - Margot's album, "Sleeping With The Lion" is now out in New Zealand! Buy buy buy, tell your friends, get them to buy too. It's on EMI. BTW (II) - Callahan, WHERE ARE YOU? :-) Now, to the subjects at hand, culled from the 112 EctoArticles that have been building up for days... :-) (At this point, I have to go, I've a gathering to go to and my lift is here. Next time you hear from me - about 3 lines down from this one - it'll be the next day, Sunday. :-) [It's now Sunday. Good morning!] Dirk klauses; > Hi, > Guess, what I spent the last day with? Their name means something like "Betty served" as > in tennis. Their videos have gotten a bit of play on MTV 120 Minutes. One 120 Minutes had Natalie Merchant guest hosting and she intro'd the video. She first said a Dutch band was coming up and I thought "wow, cool" since I lived in Eindhoven, Netherlands for a year when very young (like 8). So I taped Natalie introing the video "Tom Boy" (has there been another video?). Apparently their name came from some "famous tennis player's manual." *shrug* I liked the song and when I also saw that the female lead singer has reddish hair like mine I just had to pick it up. *grin* Unfortunately it took me a couple months to get it. They were first import, then on a small US label (Matador), and are now with Atlantic. Do the Netherland Ectophiles have much to say about them? I'm still solidifying my opinion but I like it a lot. I find them hypnotic and want to say they are like a slower and back-to-basics Ned's Atomic Dustbin with a female singer. Also because many of Bettie Serveert's songs are very similar to one-another. But then I also want to say they remind me of some classic rock too, probably because of the basic instrument style, no synths or keyboards or extras. I think Neile's description was pretty good although I really hadn't noticed a "smokey" quality in her voice (she's holding a cigarette in the CD picture though). I like the lyrics too, although there is no lyrics printed (it is English). > long span of months I've owned it. The group isn't particularly > ground-breaking, but they're good songwriters. Hi guys! Vicki wanted me to tell you about my year with Up with People. I don't know how much you know about Up with People (if at all), so I think I'd better explain what it is at first. Up with People is international organization which for 27 years has provided young men and women yearlong opportunities for cross-cultural education, diverse community service, onstage musical performance experience and extensive world travel. Briefly stated, the aim of Up with People is to build understanding among nations and to spark people to action in meeting the needs of their communities, countries, and the world; and to equip young people with the leadership qualities of global perspective, integrity and motivation to service. Up with People has no religious or political affiliations. UWP actively seeks participants from all races, religions, nationalities, cultures and backgrounds. Each year about 700 young people representing an average of 25 countries, comprising five international casts, spend eleven months travelling to many countries, entertaning audiences worldwide, involving themselves in community service wherever they go. The members of the casts have a medium age of 21 in a range of 17-26. Each year an estimated 30,000 families worldwide invite students into their homes. The hosts provide not only a place to stay, but a personal perspective of the community in which they live. In the 80-90 families the students stay with during the year, they learn about their hosts' customs foods, jobs, values, language and more. And the family learns about their guests. The benefits flow both ways. ************* This is where my story starts... *********************** In July 1992 I flew to Tucson, Arizona. That's where it all began... the five weeks of staging and orientation. It was really hard work; six days a week, ten hours a day we were practising the show. Picture this... 500 people doing fitness in a school gym without any airconditioning in Arizona in July... Gosh, it was hot! Right away in Tucson I was chosen to be one of the castmembers that will do promotion for the cast during the year. I was educated for this this job by the staff members for one week and then I was off to L.A. Our sponsor in L.A. was TOYOTA and I was living with the corporate manager (and assistant to the president) of Toyota Motor Sales of U.S.A. in Long Beach. The PR team consisted of seven members and our job was to find hostfamilies for all cast members, get food donated, make presentations (sell tickets) and find the community involvement places, etc. We worked three weeks in L.A. before the cast came; it was a lot of work, but also very challenging. When the cast left L.A. I joined them as a regular cast member. This is where our tour took me.... Lake Tahoe (CA), Grass Valley (CA), Bent (OR), Spokane (WA), Idaho Falls (ID), Shelby (MO), Sheridan (WY), Rapid City (SD), Devils Lake (ND), Detroit Lakes (MN), Crookston (MN), St. Paul (MN), Columbus (NB), Mitchell (SD), Yankton (SD), Watertown (SD), Aberdeen (SD), Sioux Falls (SD), Austin (MN), Marshall (MN), Elkhorn (WI), Sandusky (OH), Washinton D.C. , Charlotte (NC), Easton (MD), Jacksonville (NC), Oglethorpe (GA), Orangeburg (SC), Albany (GA), Knoxville (TN), MacClenny (FL), Leesburg (FL), Okeechobee (FL), Venice (FL), Ft. Lauderdale (FL), Vero Beach (FL), Fort Valley (GA), Shelby (NC), Boone (NC), Hillsville (VA), Albany (NY), Malone (NY), Geneva (NY), Watertown (NY), Niagara Falls (Canada), East Stroudsburg (PA), York (PA) ....and in Europe.... Katrineholm and Gothenburg (Sweden); Arhus, Vejle, Silkeborg and Esbjerk (Denmark); Mechelen, Charleroi, Hasselt, Haaltert, Zwalm, St. Niklaas and Opwijk (Belgium); Zurich (Switzerland); Frankfurt and Wiesbaden (Germany), Versoix and Schaffhausen (Switzerland); Godega, Rome, Rimini and Bologna (Italy); Antwerpen and Gent (Belgium); Lissabon, Porto and Braga (Portugal); Altenkirchen, Herford, Silkeborg and Wolfhagen (Germany); and our last show was in Buggenhout, Belgium. During this year with UWP I have done so many things I never thought I would do... I've visited lots of nursing homes, prisons, schools for the handicapped and elementary schools, I have planted trees for Tree People, I have helped to build houses for Habitat for Humanity, I've worked in soup kitchens for the homeless, etc. Two of the more interesting projects included helping out with relief effords in Homestead (FL) following the devastation of Hurricane Andrew and helping to coordinate five days of community service in the riot-torn areas of Central Los Angeles following the race riots of last year. It was an awesome year. I met thousands of people and made a lot of friends from all over the world and I also learned a lot. Now I'm back in Finland and trying to get used to the "normal" student life again. (I'm studying cultural geography) It's great to be back home, but I do miss the travelling. And I miss my brother Perttu who lives in Holland nowadays. :-( Vickie! Perttu faxed me the mail where you told him you'd seen my picture in the Okeechobee newspaper. I thought it was soooooo funny. By the way, it was an awful picture... I was wearing my national costume. ;-) Ok, I think this was enough about Up with People. I'm going to bed now - Good Night Everybody! ***** Riikka-Leena ***** ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 10 Oct 93 15:06:38 PDT From: tjshadb@ecto.sandia.gov (Troy J. I was at tower records at 9:30; wandering (stalking?) the place until the Ticket window opened. At 10:01, I was #1 for my ticket. The clerk entered the code for one ticket, Dead Can Dance at Zellerbach and got: Ticket Sales for this event are being black out for 47 miles due to the exclusive rights of sale for the Univeristy of California, Berkeley Zellerbach Hall. contact.... you get the picture. Those S.O.B's! they made it so only people in Berkeley could buy tickets; and was there any warning that you had to buy from Zellerbach? NO!
