I'm new to the list, but have been hearing about Happy for quite a while. (Thanks to rec.music.gaffa and the Tori mailing list). I've even written to Aural Gratification and get occasional newsletters. I still have never heard Happy--does anyone on the list know of any stores in San Diego that carry her? I've looked everywhere and can't find her--not even at Tower. I would like to buy at least one CD. If I like it I'm planning to order all the rest from Aural Gratification directly at one time (to save postage). Maybe I'll just have to break down and order them anyway. From everything I've heard I'm sure I'll love it. BTW, has anyone heard anything about the new Alison Moyet release, Essex, due out Nov 2 in England? I haven't seen anything about any U.S. release dates. I sure hope they release it here. I'm tired of paying import prices. (Though at least 4AD bands are now being released domestically). Also, I'm very interested in trying out some Diamanda Galas--though am not sure what to start with. Any recommendations? She's going to be playing here soon--what's she like live? I'm amazed by the volume of ecto--its a little daunting, but I've enjoyed reading everything. It definitely sounds like a nice group of people. Whoever keeps track of the birthdy list mine is Saturday (I think), April 16, 1966--Aries. Anyone have the full list of Dead Can Dance tour dates? Anyone know if Cocteau Twins are going to tour to support their next album? I had tickets for the last time they were here (in Denver), but they cancelled the show because Liz got pinkeye and the flu, and then rescheduled it for the week I was vacationing in Cancun. Drag! Well, I suppose that's enough for my first post. Thanks for listening! I hope thinks start looking up for you Jessica! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jeff Hanson | (619) 458-5130 4161 Campus Point Court M/S E3R | hanson@ast.saic.com San Diego, CA 92121 | ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1993 16:09:59 CDT From: Subject: Memories forgotten then recovered. The discussion in these pages the other day WRT strange cartographic projection s, like the one that puts England to the south of Italy, ultimately dislodged the memory of an ad campaign that Northwest Airlines did in the 60s. It featured an inverted map of the United States, on which was superimposed an airliner pointed toward the upper left of the map, which is where Florida end- ed up instead of its usual spot in the southeast, and the slogan "Fly Northwest to Florida." One can only speculate on what the effect would have been had the ad run today: the state of today's geographic literacy being what it is among today's young Americans, how many would have identified Seattle as a favorite winter vacation spot in response to questions in school? :-) Belated birthday greetings to Tim and Neile (it is perhaps appropriate that the jays are leading the AL playoffs at this point). Early birthday greetings to the spirit of John Lennon. In memoriam to Spuds McKenzie, heiress of sorts to the great tradition established by the likes of Billy Tipton and Little Jo. Copperman Subject: Gina bashing is a local hobby That's funny, Gina Arnold is the most hated music writer in San Diego too! Although I am not sure about the loved stuff, since no one writes to the paper to support her. She seems purposefully (and pointlessly) inflamatory, wishing death and dismemberment to all old rock stars. Also, she tends to talk about the physiques, clothes and sexiness (or lack) of the performers, often in exclusion of their music. But hey, Happy's not an old school rocker, so maybe Gina would like them. In the Reader, the local free weekly that carries her stuff, she only writes about stuff that is occuring in San Diego that week. Rarely any record reviews for record reviews sake. And, she did the same in Baltimore, where she may have been love/hated, rather than just hate/hated. Thanks for the Bettie Serveert info Neile, and Happy Birthday!! I'm almost definitely going to the show, so I'll let you know how they are live. Jeff Hanson, welcome to ecto. We should talk some off line. I live in La Jolla. I am planning to go see the DIamanda Galas show, though I don't have tickets yet (and don't know what she sounds like, live or recorded, but I do know enough that it will be a shock). I have only seen Happy's disc in the Music Plus near UCSD (across the street from my house), and they have one Warpaint and one Rhodesong. I have some others that I could lend you. The closest Dead Can Dance is coming to here is 2 shows in LA, on consecutive mondays in november (8 and 15? or whatever the closest mondays to those are). The first is at Royce hall at UCLA, and was sold out except for the 15 worst seets the day after the show. I forget where the second date is, but it was added later and may not be as hard to get tickets too. I was thinking of just driving up there without tickets, as a foolhardy adventure. My experience buying tickets on the street, even for sold out shows, has been excellent. Three for three good seats, all in San Diego though, but I am willing to risk it. Their first album "Palomino" is out on a small independant label. It is worth seeking out. They are led by a female singer with a good voice (not outstanding, but it fits the music well) and a nice guitar sound. Neile: Belly is light? Maybe not as heavy as Throwing Muses, but light? I liked the new Mazzy Star too. And yeah, it's a lot like their first, but it also isn't that far removed from what much of Opal did either. ======================================================================== From: p.cohen@genie.geis.com Date: Sat, 9 Oct 93 01:49:00 BST Subject: When I Was A Boy John, Jane's latest is nice, isn't it? She returns to the experimentation of her earlier albums. However, there are a few of my friends who aren't prepared to return to experimentation with her. However, there are more than enough melodic tunes on the album to make them happy. I find the album more satisfying than her last. All in all, the welcome return of a very talented artist. Wouldn't mind seeing a few more collaborations with k. d. laing, like she did on the "End of the World" soundtrack. ======================================================================== From: Philip Sainty Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1993 15:05:48 +1300 Subject: Happy B'day To Dan, Neile, and Quenby!!! (I flipped the cover booklet on that one so it shows the corner-of-the-window side, personally.) Anyway, this is better than either -- weird, tangled, transcendent. Favorite tracks? Hmm, "Sail", "Angel", "Candles",... well, I'll stop there. Depends on my mood, though. Hmm, imagine a collaboration between Jane Siberry and PG circa "melting face". I'd like to see what she could do with a cover of "Intruder". And after listening to "Candles" too late at night I wondered what would happen if she were to get together with Public Enemy. 1/2 :-) Oh, this is an official delurk notice. The show tonight also mentioned Tod Rundgren on next week. Don't expect too much though. The show is only 30 minutes and I've not been very impressed with the ones I've seen lately, inlucding the one tonight whose featured/hosting artist was Juliana Hatfield (I'm not a fan but was hoping to learn more). They showed a couple very short clips and only about 20 seconds of interview (less than for Lisa Germano). The show was more about 3 other artists not even mentioned in the TV Guide (like X). I got interested in it because it was offered for listening at Fame Music in Amsterdam some time ago. The cover looked good, so I put on the headphones and listened to a few songs. I really liked them, but since I'm not an impulsive buyer, I didn't immediately take it with me. I've listened to the whole disc four times now, and I think it is great. I was rather moved by the song "Breathing Hope", because it nicely expresses my feelings about the changes that have taken place in my life in the last few weeks. I'll try to write a more detailed review later, when I'm more familiar with the album, if nobody else does that before me.
