You've probably all been wondering if this list is actually *run* by anyone anymore.... *sigh*. I'm pretty busy these days, i guess I have been for a long while. On top of actually being really busy and under lots of stress at work, I'm also depressed most of the time. I'm working on that though. :) I actually went to a free screening at a clinic today and was pronounced "depressed" and it was suggested that I see someone, and they also talked about medication. If any of you out there have any thoughts/comments/ ideas/knowledge/etc about medications for depression, I am interested. aaaanyway, those are the two main reasons I don't post much to ecto anymore. But i'm still here and trying to read as much of it as I can! (I don't know how anyone can possibly read ecto, gaffa, and rdt. that's amazing :). My apologies for the troubles with the digest while I was away! I went to disney world in florida, and had a completely 100% amazing time. there is noone in the world that i could not recommend walt disney world to. I didn't want to leave. (and i'd been there before and will surely go back). Oh well, I had to come back. (I did almost stay an extra day, anyway!). One thing i missed was the "what instrument do you play?" survey.. my answer: I sing, predominantly. I play bass a little bit. I play piano/keyboards better than i play bass but i'm more interested in improving my bass skills than I am in improving my piano skills. I really like the way bass sounds and feels. It looks cool too :) :) But, more than bass or keyboards, I sing. I'm taking voice lessons right now - it's going pretty well, i can actually hear a difference in how I sound - i'm learning a lot. some of you have heard me sing which is a scary thought. some of you have even heard me sing in *person*, which I'm actually a lot more comfortable with than I am with what you've heard recorded. Once I get my life a bit more in control, hopefully greg and I can record some stuff and you can all hear it. (Be patient, I tihnk it's going to take a pretty long time before I feel better..) jessica ======================================================================== From: S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk Subject: Re: Happy Dust Date: Fri, 8 Oct 93 12:19:44 BST On Thu, 7 Oct 1993 at 20:59:36 -0500 (CDT) Aaron Hawkins wrote: > Geez, I wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition... ...all together now: NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!!!!!! -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. The panels goal is to explore how networks such as INTERNET and local BBS's can and are being used to promote, market and publicize music. The panel is being moderated by The MINDVOX Sysops. CMJ will provide selected panelists with free admission to the convention (a value of at least $150.00 I think it may be more as early registration has passed) and the oppertunity for you to express you views. CMJ does not take of accomodations or travel expenses. My name is Brian McNelis I do the fanzine N6 and am helping CMJ to find and coordinate panelists. If you or some one you know would or should be interested in this please Email me at: N6@cyberden.sf.ca.us - if possible leave who you are, what you do and a voice phone number. A listing of potential panelists will be forwarded to CMJ next week. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT CMJ DIRECTLY. Please feel free to forward this post to appropriate newsgoups and BBS's. A few months ago, I do remember seeing a copy of a Happy Rhodes CD in one of the local stores, but now none of them have any. I'm hesitant to go back to that OTHER store (some of you may remember my story from the Tori Amos mailing list about a record store owner who wouldn't stock Tori's stuff because he didn't personally like her music. And a belated Happy Birthday to Tim! Finally, after weeks of daily searching, I found the Rubberband Girl CD5 in Germany. All I can say is, that the extended version is MUCH too long and boring and BSL is strange but interesting. The CD5 has the usual thin jewel case and is half a picture disc, the other half is black. It's pressed in Holland. Then I bought Clannad's Banba which I really like. It might become my favorite Clannad album. Eurecto party: I prefer Wuppertal as a matter of money. Copperman Subject: Help me out here Thanks Rob, you were in fact the only one to answer that question. Still seeking the CD with DUke Ellington, max Roach and Charles Mingus as a trio though. Damn, I had a specific question I was going to ask, but I can't get the band name into my head correctly. Yesterday I read an interesting review about a Dutch band named ??? (something like bettie seevertt, I think that's about right, but the spelling is wrong). They are playing here Wed. as the middle act between Bufallo Tom (from Boston) and the Verlaines (from New Zealand?). Surprisingly, I have a couple of Verlaines discs, and they are the only ones not being given any promotion for this concert. Anyway, any info out there on Bettie Servert, a band, not a person, and no Bettie's in it. If not, I'll transcribe the review, which I think people would find interesting, but I'd rather hear an Ectophiles opinion than our mediocre newspaper reviewer. Christo (or anyone else): What's a nice Dutch thing to say to members of the band if I happen to run into any? And how do you pronounce it? Bob Lovejoy: SOrry, don't have your mail address handy. Music Plus now actually has a Rhodesongs, in pop, which they obviously don't confuse with the Warpaint in jazz that they don't know exists. The Kronos Quartet put on a pretty amazing show last night, as usual. IF anyone is interested, I can send out the program and make some comments, but otherwise, they played some stuff with tapes, a blues number, a cartoonish number, a Zorn number, a Glass quartet, and more. Keep praying Philip(.Sainty), you're in the lead. Feeling better isn't the whole issue. Take, for example, me experience getting tickets for Peter Gabriel when he was here. I didn't find out about the show until it was already sold out (I didn't know about Ecto yet :->), so I bit the bullet and went to a ticket agency. They sold me tickets for a not-too-excessive price, and since it was only a week before the show, the gave me a choice of picking the tickets up at will-call or getting them via Federal Express. I remembered an incident where my prize at a raffle was picked up by another Erik Johnson, so I had them Fed Ex the tickets to my office... where the mailroom decided that although it was addressed to Erik Johnson here, it should be forwarded to Eric Johnson - in the Dallas office. By the time I found out, it was too late to get them back in time. I lucked out - the promoter had released a few extra tickets, so I did get in, but.... Was it just the first pressing that came in white jewel box? In any case, the copy I found had a white jewel box but there was another in brown. I took it home, put it in the player. I think it's been there ever since. Great stuff. The opening is incredible. "Umm Gimme". I agree. The drum loop songs are wonderful. Jane's getting ser.. uh, funky. I especially like "All The Candles in the World", "Temple", and "An Angel Stepped Down" (is that the right name? I don't have the CD with me). So what does it all mean? Jane's got love on her mind. Or is that on HIS mind? After a few listens, I have decided that _When I Was A Boy_ was the album that Peter Gabriel should have done. There will be at least four ectophiles there, Michael Peskura, the ever-changeable Bo (bilinda@u.washington.edu), and Jim and myself, and another friend without net access who likes Happy's music. Anyway, WRT Bettie Serveert, they are a band from The Netherlands and have done a lot of touring in the U.S. to support their first disc called _Palomine_. It's contemporary alternative with a slightly folky, bluesy flavour, crunchy guitars, and a lead singer with a smokey though young-sounding voice. Their name means something like "Betty served" as in tennis. Their videos have gotten a bit of play on MTV 120 Minutes. I really like _Palomine_ despite the stupid stuffed dog on the cover. The music is gentle despite the emphasis on loud guitar and the overall effect is pleasant, and I've continued to play the disc over the long span of months I've owned it. The group isn't particularly ground-breaking, but they're good songwriters. It's never been an obsession like some other discoveries, but for us it's a keeper. I don't want to over-praise it, but neither do I want you to think that it's only mediocre. It's good and better than most stuff out there, but it doesn't have the lightness of Belly, say, or the weight of Throwing Muses (Hunkpapa is my fav of theirs, BTW), or the clean bluesiness of Mazzy Star (love their new one, even if it is just like their first), but it's good music. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 8 Oct 93 12:09:54 PDT From: kyrlidis@templeton.cchem.berkeley.edu (Angelos Kyrlidis) Subject: Info for Susanne OK, as promised here is some info.
