In an email to Vickie (hi!) I happened to give a story of how I discovered Happy, and she thought y'all would be interested. So here it is, in an expanded form. Hopefully, not only will it not bore folks too much, but we might even get a few of these stories going. In The Beginning, there was Nothing, and Darkness was upon the Face of the Void. Well, maybe it wasn't that dramatic. :-) I've been a music fan of fairly eclectic tastes for many years, but hadn't really gotten into many female vocalists. Then one day on MTV, I happened to catch a quirky, fascinating number whose artist & title I managed to note down. This was Tori Amos - Silent All These Years. The only time I ever saw it - luck was with me. Due to the fact that I work far too hard for my own good here, they make it up by forcing enough money on me that I can afford to take a blind shot at an artist from time to time, and next time I was at Tower, I got Little Earthquakes. I played it... and played it and played it and.... You get the idea. The next month, while I was looking for new speakers, I used it as audition material. (On Me and A Gun, do you hear a person standing between the speakers, or do you hear an enormous head the size of the back wall of the room? :-) The owner commented that if I liked Tori, I'd probably like Kate Bush - specifically Hounds of Love or The Dreaming. Well, since he obviously shared much of my taste in music (from Gustav Holst to Tori to ELP to Jazz at the Pawnshop to King Crimson - lost him at Red Hot Chili Peppers, though :-)) I took it seriously, and picked up Hounds of Love. Over the next couple of months, I made inroads on the Kate catalog. About that time, finally, we finally got hooked up to Internet at work. I was leafing through news groups when I came across rec.music.gaffa and wondered what that was. (All the places I normally get CDs were out of The Dreaming - hadn't heard Suspended in Gaffa.) Looking through, I saw Wow! people talking about Kate! and Tori! and a few others, too. Seems to be a lot of talk about Happy Rhodes - guess I'll give her a try. I went to CD Warehouse (seemed to be a better bet for obscure stuff) and found the bin. Saw the covers of Rhodes I & II, and rechecked the spines to see if I had picked up heavy metal guitarist Randy Rhodes by mistake. :-) Nope - it's Happy. I had heard Rearmament mentioned and they had a copy of it, so since there were no monsters on that one :-) I got it. Popped it in on my way up to my cousin's wedding that weekend. On my way home, I stopped back and picked up I & II - guess I liked it, huh? :-) Over the next few weeks, I picked up the rest of Happy's work, and now my travelling CD collection is rarely without at least one Happy disc. (Does that make this a Happy ending? :-) Hope you've enjoyed this, and hope it wasn't too long - it kinda got out of control in the middle. :-) I guess the original point of all this was to say thanks to all of you who mentioned Happy on gaffa. While I know it can't be overdone (that's why ecto was put together in the first place, I figured that one out), it still helps to let those like me who haven't been exposed to her know that she's out there. Next CD trip, I'll take the next reccomendation I've been hearing and try Jane Siberry. Thanks to one & all for the great reccomendations! Hi all, Before we begin, I'm sad to see that the Firesign tour is skipping Philly. I've been a fan forever; hope you've all seen "Eat or Be Eaten", a recent RCA Home Video release that was quite enjoyable. In this election year, remember the Martian Space Party - their platform is Six Inches Off The Ground, and they call for the Guaranteed Annual Year! My kinda people! Anyway, Susanne has asked again for your help! Her Next Big Project involves publicity through Newspapers, and to that effect she has asked me to ask you the following: In cities where Happy is receiving airplay, and discs are in the stores, please send me (by return private email) the names of the local paper(s) best suited to a review of Happy. We also need the paper's address, the name of the best music reviewer, and a telephone and/or fax number. If you're in a location where Happy is less available, but feel there is a legit paper that would do a review, feel free to send that in, but let us know this is the case. Again, this offer is currently open to locations in the continental USA (sorry Eurectos, Austrectos, and South Amerectonians!) We would deeply appreciate your response ASAP. Seems Happy, Kevin & Susanne will be here in town this weekend and time permitting, Susanne may stop by here to pick up the info you send. However, any info arriving later will be forwarded to them pronto. Then there's always the chance that nobody will show up here anyway due to the busyness of it all. Happy will be on WXPN Sunday afternoon sometime between two and four PM to help out with their pledge drive. She plans on doing a few numbers live, and I plan on rolling tape. Due to Happy's extreme shyness I doubt I'll get to see her myself, but Susanne hopes to find the time to drop by and pick up all the info she's requested of you, which I have printed and ready to go. Sorry for the length of this post! Oh, one more thing! I mentioned to her that ectophiles were a great source of music info, and when I got to Jane Siberry, she asked me to let you all know that she is a _major_ Jane fan! She loves the new album, and when she called Happy to tell her about it, Happy said that she's been into Jane's music all along and loves it dearly. The new album is a major freakout! He started off casually enough, complaining about the weather - "Why did it have to rain today?" he asked me; "Why couldn't it have rained yesterday! It wouldn't have mattered yesterday!" I said something about it not making much difference to me seeing as how I had to come this way every morning, but he ignored me and continued by asking me what the time was. In French. At this point I was beginning to think how great it would be if he'd leave, but no chance... "Do you speak French?" he enquired. I decided to reply in the negative, given that my remaining ability to speak that language consisted of little more than introducing myself, and making casual remarks regarding the presence of certain writing implements upon a table. (An item which, unhappily, was not present in the middle of the side-road.) He then asked me if I was a student, and I told him I was. "In Russian, you pronounce it 'Student'" he told me. uh huh, I thought, making sure I kept smiling, while he made vague pointing gestures up the hill, towards the university. Finally, after slowly backing away as I repeated the phrase "I am a student" in Russian as he had shown me, I managed to make a quick excuse and escape...
