I reckoned they were flogging berets owing to John Switzer's propensity towards wearing the things. Do they still make these things, I wonder? Do I possess a priceless artifact of Sib fandom? I also got a ticket to see Eric Bogosian later this month. I've only seen him on tape, but what I've seen blew me away. The next time someone talks to Happy or Kevin or Susanne could they please ask them to make sure they check the "gift" box on the customs declaration when they mail out stuff overseas, as they have in the past? I've just received two copies of RhodeSongs (one for me and one for Terry) and a copy of Equipoise (for one of my friends who I've converted :-) and been charged #7.62 ($11.43) for the privilege of receiving them by the UK customs and post office (#1.35 duty, #5.07 value added tax and #1.20 post office clearance fee). If I'd known I was in for this triple whammy, I would have tried to set up a trade with someone looking for some UK CDs. What's even more galling is the fact that I tried *very* hard to pick these up on a recent trip to the USA reasoning that retail sales would be better for Happy than mail order ones, but not a single record store in Raleigh NC or Nashville TN (Music City USA - good joke!) had even heard of her let alone stocked anything... Now, I've got my whinge out of the way (a typical whinging Pom!), a couple of comments about RhodeSongs: 1. Summer is absolutely brilliant! 2. Has anyone else noticed that the monster who appears on half the Equipoise cover and in full in the RhodeSongs booklet has different coloured eyes - is this another Bowie tribute? Also, the RhodeSongs picture is a mirror image (check out the eye colours). I think a Eurecto Fest would be a great idea! I think the UK just wins out over Germany for having the most Ectophiles this side of the pond, so perhaps we should host the first one. I'd certainly be happy to provide a venue. I think I have all the prequesities (a large home, hifi system, TV and VCR, a well equipped kitchen, and no cohabitants to placate). There is a growing band of Happy fans here in Cambridge (five and counting). Cambridge is quite easy to get to from continental Europe (fly to Stansted the nicest airport in the UK and just 30 minutes down the M11 from Cambridge) or you can even fly from Amsterdam to Cambridge airport. Chris, you'd also be welcome on your travels - I am on the Ecto Hostel list. I've misplaced the format but... I'm mostly a composer. I've recorded and performed using keyboards, bass, guitar, percussion, shofar, and several other instrument that I can picture but whose names escape me, but I can't play any of them really well. (I've never gotten the hang of playing chords on guitar, for example.) However, I can sequence pretty well, and come up with interesting musical contexts for others (as my example in the Happy Birthday Tape may show (taking this on faith since I'm still chomping to get my copy)). My last big project was the score for a show "Shekhinah: The Presence" (which I also wrote, directed, etc), which consisted entirely of live, sampled. and/or electronically altered voices. Right now I'm starting work on the score for "Gabrielle: A Living Hypertext" (yes, I got the name from Happy's songs; no, it doesn't bear any other relation), another play that I wrote, etc, which will premiere (cross fingers) at the CyberCultureHouston festival in December. Beer: Boy Howdy. BTW, someone mentioned New Brunswick and records in the same sentence, which sent me into a wave of nostalgia. Not sure if you young'ns will remember this :-), but back when Jem Records was *the* record importer in the country, Cheap Thrills on George Street used to get all their overstock into the $1.99 bins. I blame them for my record addiction B-]. ======================================================================== Subject: Ecto Spotted! Date: Mon, 4 Oct 93 17:12:24 CDT From: Joe Zitt Wow.. am I glad i looked for the Mitch Elrod album at the local Sound Wherehouse. I didn't see it, but there was a suspicious band-card for something called "Ecto". I looked there, and sho'nuff, there was Happy's Ecto album, which I snarfed. I pointed out the error to the staff there, but they pointed out that Happy's name was so small and so low on the cover that it was half obscured by the anti-theft doohingus that they put all their disks in. I've seen this happen a few times with different album. I think it might be worthwhile for AG to put stickers on the album (like the size and color of the one on RhodeSongs) saying some thing like "Reissued! The classic album by HAPPY RHODES". *grumble grumble* Well, they did have two copies of RhodeSongs, filed properly, as have most of the stores I've checked around here. ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
