In my continuing quest to seek out and find potential Happy fans, I posted this in rec.music.gaffa/Love-Hounds: =========================================================================== Newsgroups: rec.music.gaffa Subject: Ecto (was Re: Besides Kate . . . ericf@netcom.com (Eric France) writes: >thus spake jchokey@leland.Stanford.EDU (James Alexander Chokey): >> devoted. Unfortunately, not that many other artists get talked about in gaffa. Mentioned, yes. Talked about? Not much. A far better source is the mailing list Ecto, where other artists (especially female artists) are not only mentioned, but **talked** about, reviewed, raved over. It's a busy list, because anyone can talk about anything they want to talk about without fear of being flamed. Besides music, topics range from movies, books and concerts, to physics, weather and languages, and just about anything in between. It's a very friendly list and anyone is welcome (even if you haven't heard Happy's music) so you might give it a try if the mail load isn't a problem. It's available in loose mail form or digest form. Jessica's the Ecto Goddess Lady, so write to her at ecto-request@ns1.rutgers.edu to join. Coming soon to an Ecto list near you: my transcriptions of interviews I did with Mary Coughlin, Sheila Chandra and Heidi Berry. Still to come, interviews with Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard, Jane Siberry, Wendy MaHarry, Iris DeMent, Eddi Reader and maybe, The Story. Still trying to line up, Lisa Germano, The Cocteau Twins, and maybe (oh please oh please) Kate. If I were lucky enough to interview Kate, I'd post that in gaffa, but I wouldn't feel comfortable posting any of the others here because they'd take up too much space. They'll definitely get posted in Ecto though, because I know that no one minds and I won't get flamed. I *love* gaffa dearly, so I don't mean to sound derogatory, it's just that here, there's always an uneasy feeling that a flame war is brewing. Tempers flare here (and I'm guilty of it too) and there's a feeling that someone's always waiting to jump on something said. As I said, I'm guilty of it too, though I'm not as bad as I used to be :-) and I've tried hard to bite my tongue instead of lash out at certain posts. I hope that *this* post doesn't start a flame war. I'm just saying that Ecto is flame-free because subscribers understand that, though it's a mailing list for Happy Rhodes, it's also a community where people can talk about anything that's on their minds, get to know each other (beyond just musical tastes) and be comfortable. It's there for anyone who might be interested in (and have room & time for) such a thing. Vickie =========================================================================== See, I really, really tried to be humble and nice. I didn't call anybody a dickhead for their "I thought this was a Kate Bush list, can we get back to talking about Kate? How do I make a Kill file? I can't make a Kill file because I'm on the digest. Yadda yadda blah blah blah" posts and I kept my mouth shut about Jon and Stev0's regular jabs at Happy and I'm really proud of myself :-). (Sometimes, I can be a real bitch on gaffa, so I'm making fun of myself too. People who *only* know me from Ecto, or who are very new to gaffa, would be shocked at some of my flamey posts on gaffa in the past. I just have a big, agressive mouth sometimes. I'm trying my best to keep it shut, especially when Happy gets dumped on, because those posts make me *really* angry. I *do* e-mail my sentiments though :-) so I don't keep totally quiet.) Thanks to the folks who are mentioning Happy in the "favorite artists" threads in RDT & gaffa. It's always wonderful to see her name pop up! Well hell, Charley and I got our first "no" today, when The Story's "people" said we couldn't interview them because they're too busy (everybody but us gets "a piece of The Story" apparantly) but of course, we realize that J&J don't have anything to do with the promotions side of it and we're certainly not holding it against them. The Wendy MaHarry (I keep typing MaHappy and have to backspace and change it) interview has been postponed until next week. MyChris, my very most wonderful Chris, rigged me up a phone hookup that feeds directly into my mixer board, so I can set levels, play music in the background, and record the interview directly onto reel-to-reel or cassette while it's happening. It will be just like a live on-air interview, but without the pressure, because I can still go back and edit it before it really airs. Isn't that *great*??!! He's so sweet :-)! Thanks to him, I have a better home studio than some radio stations (seriously, you should see WZRD's studio. They only have one CD player and one cassette player, while I have two of each and can mix. They do have two turntables, and, thank goodness for me, a reel-to-reel player.) Ilka, I have to admit to you that I totally forgot to ask Heidi Berry about touring in Germany, or anywhere else. I'm sorry :-(. (Btw, of course I don't mind if you hug too, the more the merrier! *HUG*) CHICAGOPHILES!! Dead Can Dance tickets go on sale Saturday, tomorrow at noon. I don't know the price, but the ad I saw said "reserved seating" which is weird. I've never known the Vic Theater to have reserved seating for a concert. Also, in the new IE (Illinois Entertainer) there's an article about Jane Siberry which is quite good. Speaking of Jane, I've been debating if I should make all the Los Angeles area Ectophiles feel really bad about not going to see Jane when they had the chance. It's a mean thing to do, but on behalf of all the Jane fans who live in places *other* than Los Angeles and would kill to have seen this show, I'll try my best :-). It wasn't exactly a "concert" as much as it was a "presentation." Jane sang, but she also gave a talk, answered questions, and showed some of her videos, including at least 2 videos from ...Boy, and "The Bird In The Gravel" from The Walking, which she directed. This presentation was a rare treat, because she's *not* planning on touring anytime soon. (Is that enough? Shall I go on? Sure, why not...) The two videos from Boy were "An Angel Stepped Down" and "Sail Across the Water" which she not only directed, but filmed too. According to this article, Reprise refused to give her money to make videos so she made these videos with a camcorder and, I believe, computer art. At the time of this article's interview, she was scoring a short film for two women at the American Film Institute, so I imagine that it was finished and she also showed it in Los Angeles. The film is called _Underwater_ and Jane says: "It's quite a disturbing film. It's a very interior soundtrack - it has to relate to what's going on in this little girl's head all the time. I've sort of created collages out of audio tracks and certain lines that people say have become hooks to me. And a running theme is 'Hush little baby, don't say a word.' The little girl sings it, her dad sings it - it's really spooky when he sings it - and then I sing it. It's all sort of woven together." She's also working on a short film of her own at the time of this interview. I have no idea if it was finished and shown in LA. Jane is asked "And now you want to do your own film as well?" and she replies: "I don't _want_ to. I think films are one of the biggest pain in the butts, but it's arriving anyway. The story keeps unraveling and I just keep writing more and more for it. It's called _The Awakening of Goose Boy_. It's not a regular type film; it's like a long-form song. You keep hearing the screaming of geese, which is very haunting sounding, and his mother goes into the room to wake him up and he never wakes up. He's muttering always; he's off with his migrating friends and he never wakes up. And then there's all the people who _are_ awake in his life. There's a girl in a passenger seat of a car who filters the world of men through the shape of the cars. She just looks at a car and judges. 'Big penis, small penis." That's her world. They're all in their own worlds. But somehow connected...as we all are, you know? I just think I'd like to shoot a lot of it myself as simply as I can with just a few really powerful, emotionally strong actors, and just really do it low key and simple. If I can do it like a long video, then I'll do it." Wow! I can't type in this whole article right now, but this is the opening paragraph: "Jane Siberry lies beneath a creative avalanche. She has just released her sixth album (third for Reprise) _When I Was A Boy_, she's scoring a short film, writing her own screenplay, and tinkering with the idea of doing an album of original hymns. She's creating a children's book for a neighbor's kid, and doing select spoken word performances. She's also just learned how to craft artwork on her computer." Busy lady! This article came at a good time because it gives me lots of ideas for questions to ask her. Btw, AnthonyH, tell us about your interview with her. Please? Are you going to transcribe it and post it? Does anyone have any questions for Wendy HaHarry? Vickie "Plant your feet, stick out your chest, and say that magic word: huh?" I believe there exist a number of different versions of this one. Could somebody please describe these versions? Are there any audible differences? I have a copy that was recorded in 1980/81, with a simple black on white cover. Yesterday I discovered a version in a CD store that said 'original 1980 recording', and had a black on grey cover. I managed to find Heidi's two latest albums, but the first two (Fire Fly and Below the Waves) are very difficult to find - if at all. I heard Fire Fly was deleted and Below the Waves only exists as an American Import. Does somebody by any chance have an idea where I could find those CDs? I was thinking of a mail order place or even a normal record shop in the States. The only think I'd need would be their telephone or fax number, then I could get in touch with them. I really want to have those two albums... Glomming onto the Bas threadette here, I'd just like to add my two scents - The Fender Precision is a wonderful instrument. I'm not a guitar player and I've always loved the old P-bass. It's everything Greg said it was. I now use a Music Man Sabre, which I think from the album pictures is the same one as used by the Cranberries bassist. It has a lot more presence and bottom than the Fender, but that makes the Fender no less fun. The moral is, subscibe to The Bottom Line bass digest at bass-request@uwplatt.edu and keep those laggard record -er, CD store reports coming in! My thanks to those who have thus far responded, and I'm sure the rest of you (you know who you are!) (I love the profundidty of that line!!) will soon be sending in your reports. The show should be broadcast soon on Public Radio. They only did about 4 songs and joined in the final song, but their sound stood out as the highlight of the show IMHO. John Martin also played on the show. He is an amazing guitarist. I was also able to see John Martin and Morphine play at a local club Sunday night. They did one song together. Morphine did 2 fairly long sets. Their sound just amazes me. The baritone Sax and Slide Bass puts down a powerful floor for Mark Sandman's vocals.
