Mp ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 23 Oct 1992 18:30:23 EDT From: mpf0642@tesla.njit.edu Subject: Madonna/AnaisN/HMiller/Looks Probably, Madonna would wish to be as talented as Anais Nin. Anais Nin was the daughter of Joaquin Nin, a famous Spanish composer-pianist. She was influenced by writers such as Proust, and Giradoux. She came from Spain to America when she was eleven with her mother and two brothers, but she never settled at any one place. She traveled frequently and also lived in Paris, France, for several years. She also lived in the Greenwhich Village, New York. While she was still an aspiring writer, she met Henry Miller, then not as famous for his writings as he became later with such books as "Tropic Of Cancer". She developed a friendship with Miller and a had a love/sexual relationship with him for sometime. People usually think of both as erotic writers, but I am not too much at ease with that sort of labeling as far as Anais Nin writings. Madonna with that look pretends to portray, possibly, one of the characters, Dita, in her album, some sort of a dominatrix. I don't understand how our friend on the list made an association of Dita with Anais Nin. Anais didn't look nothing like that and I don't see the possible relation of Anais Nin with a dominatrix. Just my $0.02. I haven't seen the video for 'Erotica', but I was talking about her interview with Steve Blame. She reminded me of the actress who portrayed Anais Nin in the film 'Henry and June', and I made the association through the erotic content of Madonna's new work and the erotic writings of fantasies by Anais Nin (which from the little I have read/heard are about as diverse as those portrayed by Madonna). I really don't know what the *real* Anais Nin looked like... Anyway I just thought that all of this was done before and had nothing but shocking value for the US. Plus, she used to look a lot prettier in the past :) Angelos ======================================================================== From: dorje@casbah.acns.nwu.edu (Michelle Berkowitz) Subject: Greetings! Date: Fri, 23 Oct 92 19:37:00 CDT Greetings everyone from a BRAND SPANKING NEW ectophile! I have over the past few weeks been thoroughly happyvangelized by Chip, and I can honestly say I'm hooked. I'm surprised at how quickly it happened -- it usually takes me quite a few listens before I "bond" with a particular artist's music. In this case, all it took was sitting in Chip's living room with those CD's playing and those lyrics in front of me and Bam! Here I am. Actually, my first experience with Happy was not such a good omen. Chip had made a tape for me -- Warpaint, I think -- which broke in my car stereo before I even had a chance to concentrate on the song. Looking back on it, I think Happy wanted my full attention. In the meantime, I chucked the tape and forgot about it...until recently. Like I mentioned earlier, I really feel a connection to her music. Besides being hauntingly beautiful, her songs really hit me on a spiritual level -- that's gotta sound really cheesy, but when I listen to Happy I feel part of a larger whole -- very connected and exactly where I should be. I'd be interested in hearing if you all think I'm way off base or if you share this feeling. I also find that her music appeals to my own darker side, and (while disconcerting at first) I think I'm comfortable with that now. I also directly attribute some new project ideas I've been getting recently (I work with textiles in my spare time) to listening to Happy--can't wait til I get the tapes and can play her while I work on them! I mean, it's not like you'll be.........SHUNNED.....or anything....:-) :-) but just know that, 20 years from now, people will be whispering behind your back ("did you know that Martin passed up seeing Tori Amos when she came to Perth, Australia?" "Why, no, you aren't serious" "Yes, poor, poor Martin" "My land, why would he do such a thing?" " because he didn't believe the Ectophiles" "" "Pity, isn't it?" "Why, I just can't believe it. Kate Bush is the Mother Jane Siberry is the Daughter Happy Rhodes is the Holy Ghost Madonna (darn, I used the name) is Satan. Or, as I usually designate her, the Anti-Kate. I had to endure listening to the song "Erotica" while working out in a gym this evening. I had to fortify myself with thoughts of Kate and Jane and Happy. I don't wish to offend anyone who is a fan of the Anti-Kate. However, if anyone is a fan I suspect I may manage to do so shortly. Kate is complex and creative. The Anti-Kate is apparently going to be doing cheap dance music until the end of time. Kate uses sexual references to add depth to her characters and emotional involvement to her music. The Anti-Kate uses sexual references for publicity and cheap titillation. Kate sells albums by cramming them with content and a unique style. The Anti-Kate sells albums by running around naked on MTV. I just can't stand Madonna (darn, used the name _again_). ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 23 Oct 92 22:35:14 PDT From: stevev@greylady.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Re: Tori Down Under WretchAwry writes: > > Hey Martin, you said the darndest thing: > > > Tickets go on sale tomorrow for a Tori Amos concert down here in Perth, > > I can't decide whether to go or not. 8-. My suggestion was that if his wallet felt bad about having its money extracted for this purpose, he should take his wallet to the concert and it would forgive him. By the way, Martin, don't forget to hang around after the concert and meet her. Barry ======================================================================== Subject: stuffs Date: Sat, 24 Oct 92 02:25:06 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Welp, I've now been to three of the more likely stores to have the live Sarah McLachlan CD with no luck. Guess it's time to try a special order. Can someone give me the catalog number? I *did*, however, find Pamela Golden's _Happens All The Time_ while I was looking for Sarah. I made one of those spur of the moment "I can't really afford this but I've been idly checking for it for months and this is the first time I've seen it and I'd better buy it before it disappears into the mists again forever" decisions that are so difficult. I was *quite* upset to find out that the album is only 32+ minutes long. I'm still on my first listen, but so far, it's *wonderful*. "Normal Life" is _brilliant_, sounding to me like a cross between Gabriel, KaTe, and Tori. I was amazed at how much the vocals reminded me of Tori. Something about her vocal style, I guess. It's only that one song that makes me think of Tori though. Weird. That song alone, though, may be worth the price of the album. Which track was used in the "Easy Spirit" shoe commercial? [note..."Ballet Dream" just started and it sounds familiar, so I'm guessing that it's the song in the commercial] While I was record shopping, I heard an album by a completely un-Ecto artist, a fellow named Joe Henry, and it really caught my attention. These days it takes a lot for a male artist (other than the obvious ones...;-) to do that. Sort of a country feel, with lots of fiddle. Reminiscient of Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp with some John Hiatt thrown in. The album is _Short Man's Room_ and it's Henry's second release. Definitely worth a listen; I hope to pick up a copy sometime. Welcome to Shelby! You mention that Happy's music connected with you, from the beginning, on a spiritual level. I don't think anyone here is going to accuse you of being hokey--it's happened to most of us, and that's part of what gives Ecto it's personality, even now with its giant subscription list. Wow. I really love this Pamela Golden album. Vickie strikes gold yet again! (now listening to "Happens All the Time") Mitch--in case you didn't know, there is a 3-CD compilation of Flanders and Swan(n?) material available. A bit pricey (the copy I saw was $53) but depending on the quality of your vinyl, it may be the best way to replace some of the material now that you've joined up with the rest of the technological world. Well, we'll find out on November 21st. :) Under the combined onslaught of ecto-encouragement I went in on Friday morning and snaffed up two seats right up the front! The tickets were A$30 each... (about US$22, I think)... which is pretty good for a concert these days. Now, I just hope I can afford the time, since my thesis is due a couple of days later. Angelos mentioned Tori had a love of 'horiatiki', the traditional greek village salad (tomato, cucumbers, olives, olive oil, feta cheese, vinegar and capsicum etc)... I'm seriously considering making up a big bowl and bringing it along. Another interesting thing : 'Rage' tonight will be playing every single Peter Gabriel video they can find, in order... this will definitely be something to have the video recorder ready for. For me that has to be Either Paula Abdul or Mariah Carey, but that's another story... ANd now for a serious music inquiry. I went on a manic cutout-bin invasion last night and got me some old Fad Gadget CD's (brings back memories of my early 80's music years when I was really taken by Fad Gadget's darker side of electro-pop), and a sampler called 'The Tyrrany of the beat' which features proto-industrial bands like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret VOltaire, DAF, and others. What struck me though was the song 'In flagranto delicto' by a band called SPK. It has some *amazing* female vocals layered over a cello, and in its mood evoked memories of Dead can Dance. Does anybody know more of SPK? Is all their stuff like that? Or should I take this inquiry to gaffa?? :) ;) Angelos who apologizes if anybody thinks this discussion belongs elsewhere. ======================================================================== From: shark@cs.ucla.edu (Jeanne B.
