I wonder if this is what confused the flag carrier at the World Series game the other night. The story noted that at the latest game, the flag was oriented in the right direction (though vendors were doing boffo business in U.S. flags for fans to hold upside down), and coincidentally that the flag carrier was from Buffalo (where, presumably, Canadian flags are a more familiar sight than in many parts of the United States). To change the subject from botany to zoology: Is the down on baby blue jays fuzzy? If so, we may have another rational nexus to the outside world. In re Neile's query about Maire Brennan's solo album (which I bought used, but have seen in new-record stores): The one time I've listened to it, it seemed less explcitly Celtic in character than I remember Clannad being. I may be wrong. In re Hank Kilmer's recent communication to Jessica and me: My last couple of posts to this list have not generated any bounce messages with your address on them, so apparently the old glitch has righted itself. Welcome [back?] aboard, Hank. The issue of _TV Guide_ with listings for this week reports that Nickelodeon has seized control of the Ren and Stimpy show from creator John Kricfalusi, reportedly over episodes not delivered, or delivered behind schedule, and some specific content that was considered outre even by R&S standards. _TVG_ observed that Nick, as the show's owner, was within its contractual rights in firing Kricfalusi, but that it remained to be seen whether R&S would remain their old selves in the long run. The item likened to the affair to the moguls of old Hollywood keeping the Little Tramp character, but firing Charlie Chaplin from portraying him. Where is Powdered Toast Man now that we need him? Enclosed is a copy of a message from my friend Sue who, upon nudgings from Vickie, wrote a short account of her first reactions of Happy. Now all we gotta do is get her on Ecto... ;-) ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Ok, here's my story... I was talking to Jeff one day about music and I asked him if he knew Loreena McKennit; I had just read a review of her album. He said he knew her and offered to make a copy of the album for me, but in the meantime why didn't I just listen to a tape he had of someone named Happy Rhodes (he's a sly one!). I listened to it that night and from the first listen I was hooked. That has never happened to me before; that I would like someone's music right away. The second time I listened I felt like I had been hearing her for years. My roommate is not as open to new music as me so I put HR on without saying anything about it. She asked me right away who it was, but gave no indication whether she liked it. I later put it on again. Ever since she has been the one asking to put it on, or just putting it on herself. She was the one who pointed out Warpaint to me in Women & Children First (a bookstore in Chicago) and thought it was great because then they would have her next record when it comes out. I hope they do. -----------------------End of Forwarded Message--------------------------- Chip here again. Sue politely left out the bit of how I accidentally gave her the Les Mis soundtrack telling her it was Happy. (I don't always label dubs of CDs because I often re-use the tape for something else). Oh well, the next day she got the real tape of Happy and the rest is history. :) btw, she did end up getting the CD... Now it's time to get the 1st 4, Sue! ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 23 Oct 92 2:28:09 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: HBP---->IMPORTANT Hi! If you have sent me a package for the HBP, please e-mail me right away and tell me. If you haven't mailed your package yet-----> DON'T!! (yet) Today I went to the post office and applied for a Post Office Box. I wanted to make absolutely sure that all packages would get to me. There are too many kids and weird characters around our place for me to be totally comfortable with the packages coming here. Even if the mail carrier leaves a slip in the mailbox saying I have a package, that particular branch is in an out-of-the-way place, and they close at 5:00pm. Since I get off work at 4:40, and it would take me at least 45 minutes to get to that branch, I'd have to wait for Saturdays. Even then, I work a lot of Saturdays. So today I was thinking about the problem and decided to get a P.O. Box. Only thing is, they wouldn't give it to me right away because I don't have a photo ID other than my passport, which they wouldn't accept because it doesn't have my address on it. (argh!) So the fella behind the counter said that it would take a week to 10 days. Blah! But it will be worth it, and I'm willing to stretch the deadline to accomodate. The PO Box will be at the main, downtown Post Office, which doesn't close until 9:00pm, and I only work a few blocks away from there, so it will make everything a lot easier. It will ease my mind, anyway. I'll post the address as soon as I have it. In the meantime, tape your songs and messages, pack it all up, and have it ready to go. If you have already sent it, no problem. Just let me know, so I'll be looking for it. I'll tell people as soon as I get their packages. If you're new to Ecto (HI!) and haven't the faintest idea what I'm talking about, it the HGP'92--->Happy Gift Project 1992. It's a present to Happy and to other Ectophiles. If you want to participate, choose a song that you like, and that you would like Happy and the rest of us to hear. It can be any genre, by a man or woman, doesn't matter. Put that song on a 100 minute cassette, and, if you have a way to do it, tape a little message to Happy (and us, if you want to) telling your name, where you're from, the ARTIST and SONG TITLE and WHERE IT COMES FROM, and whatever else you want to say. You will be your own DJ. (If you have no way to tape a message, I can make my answering machine available to you, e-mail for details. If you don't want to leave a message at all, that's cool, but we all really wish you would, even if it's just to give the "who you are and what it is" info.) Take that tape, and another 100 minute cassette, and package it up. I need to be able to send your tapes back to you, so *PLEASE* include a self-addressed, stamped mailer. You can include a few dollars for the mailer and postage if you want to, but it's all so much easier if you provide that stuff. I will be compiling the songs and messages onto a master tape as I receive them. When I have them all done, I will make tapes for Happy (and Kevin) and send them to her as a Holiday present. Last year, the HGP spilled onto a second tape, so I'm asking for 2 tapes in advance. I will record the HGP from my master tape onto your tapes, then send them back to you. The upshot is, everyone will hear exactly what Happy hears, so it's a shared present. We all get to hear the songs that everyone else picked, and know that Happy's hearing the same things we are. It's a great way to share in giving Happy a present, and to spread music around too. Last year there were a few glitches. Mail got lost, the X-Mas rush was on and Happy ended up getting it in January :-( (but she did get it, that's the important thing. Which reminds me to say that I'm still willing to put together the Birthday project if Greg would send me everything. Could someone pass the word along since Greg (footah!, not the new Greg) doesn't have net access at the moment?) This year I would like to get it to her before the Holidays, so please get everything together and wait for my post telling the PO Box address, so you can mail it immediately after. Deadline is Dec. 1. If I receive tapes after that date, I cannot guarantee that you'll be included, though you can still receive the version that Happy gets. Dirk, you asked about IRCs (International Reply Coupons) and they are fine. I don't know how many though. If you're overseas and want to send cash for the mailer and postage, that's fine, but it has to be American currency. $10.00 should cover a mailer and airmail postage. If there's any left over I can send it back or use it to subsidize other costs, let me know which you prefer. (No, this isn't as presise as it should be, but I never said I was Detail Demon.) Hopefully, this year everything will run smoother than last year. I know some tapes are still owed, too. Not from the original batch, but from later requests. David Lubkin and Alan, I haven't forgotten about you, really I haven't. I've just sort of....spaced off :-(. I haven't yet talked to Doug (hi Doug!) but he offered quite a while ago to help dub the tapes for Ectophiles. If you have an account with him....well, we'll have to work htat out, because you'll still have to send me at least one tape with your song. I suppose, if you have an account, then you could just send me a short tape, 10-30 minutes, with your selection. As soon as it's all finished I'll make Doug a copy and send it to him. He can take it from there. I want Happy's tapes to get to her before the holidays, but your tapes probably won't get to you until shortly after the new year. We'll see how it goes. If you're a couple (Hi Mike & Angel!) you can send 2 songs, Klaus & Claudia did last year. You can either make one message together or 2 separate messages, whichever you want. Anything else.....? Probably. I'm a bit behind on Ecto and e-mail (as usual) so I have lots to respond to. If you just have a general question, you might get a quicker answer if you post to Ecto than if you e-mail me. Especially if you didn't participate last year, then you can ask questions of people who did. (I think they'll tell you it was worth the hassle, there's a lot of great music on HGP'91.) As Ahr-nold would say...."Ayhl be beck!" GO BOO-HAYS!! (Blame Mike Royko) Sorry Valerie, but Canada just *has* to win this one! (Was there a game tonight? I haven't turned on the TV at all. I guess I'll find out tomorrow morning. I *really* *really* *REALLY* want one of those t-shirts with the upside down flag! I was on the floor laughing like a madwoman when I saw them. I mean the Canadian t-shirts with the u-s-d American flag. Very clever and funny! Kiri, I'll check the Reader tomorrow, because I can't remember when Loreena's coming. Something like the 9th or the 15th of November. She's playing at the Park "Jane/Sarah/Tori/Julee/LeMystere" West. Hello to all the new Ectophiles (if you have, in fact, made it all the way through this post!) Meredith! I will if you will! Vickie "President Clinton?" says Newsweek. "Yep" says me. ps, reminds me....Mitch, did you know she was/happen to see Laurie Anderson at the rally? According to Richard Roeper, she was there gathering material for her next project. I wanted to go, and I only work a few blocks away, but my lunch hour is scheduled wrong :-(. ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 23 Oct 92 08:31:33 +0100 From: Terry Partis Subject: HAPPY Birthday Here's wishing a Happy Birthdays to ectophile Dave Steiner on October 24th. The evening was a long one. The original bill of Shocked, Taj Mahal, Uncle Tupelo, and The Band (what's left of it) was carved down to include just the first 2. Added was a Blues Man, something something Brown (I knew I'd forget his name) who played guitar and violin. Holly and I arrived at the Park West at 6:30, an hour before the show was supposed to start. Despite the hefty price of admission (28.50 plus bullshit charges), the concert was sold out (and they added a second show!). It seems that every time I frequent the Park West, more and more of the seats are "reserved", meaning you have to pay an additional $10 to sit in them! Thus, getting there early guaranteed us the best non-reserved seats available, which were actually pretty good. The floor in front of the stage, often filled with long mess-hall-like tables, was for sitting on and standing on (and dancing, but there were too many people for that). Brown came on around 7:40 and played for over 50 minutes. He had a band with him. Then Taj Mahal came out around 8:50 and played for almost an hour. The crowd (standing only) was *very* *very* noisy, esp. for Taj Mahal, who is a one man act. I had never seen either Brown or TM before and thought they were OK for what they were, but not nearly worth the admission price. But I figured this would happen. At a few points in his performance, TM played and sang so softly you could barely hear him, thus forcing the noise level down, albeit temporarily. Shocked came on a few minutes to ten and played until just past 11:30, playing just one encore. She is *so* at ease with the audience. What brought this show together was her ability to play with both Taj Mahal and Brown, in turn, using them to convey her new songs (apparently they helped her record some of them) which for the most parts were adaptions of old fiddle tunes her daddy taught, with original lyrics by Shocked. Some of her interpretations were very stirring, esp. Cotton-eyed Joe, clearly the standout of the show. She got married 3 weeks ago, and alluded to having had to "change" in order to tour (no details were supplied). But she said she has grown alot. She spoke of Arkansas Traveller being the final volume in a 5-year, 3-album trilogy, exploring musical influences on her from childhood. She played selections from each of these albums, including VFD, and a follow up about Eddie, who really did start fires. She had various audience participation songs, including a "dialog" between her band and selected audience members, with musical interludes, the totality of which she claimed as the "title track" of her new album. There was one point at which she and some other audience members just danced the polka while Brown and the 2 other band members played faster and faster. When done, Shocked was so out of breath it seemed she might hve trouble continuing! The other members of Shocked's band were a banjo-come-guitarist (female) who's name I don't recall but who has just released a new solo album herself. She was marvelous. There was also an electric bass player (when I saw her a year ago her backup was a bluegrass band with a real bass). There was no drummer. In all, she looked good, sounded good, related some fine stories (including a follow-up to her Alaska song in which the protaganists were found flown to her wedding at the very last minute), and embraced Brown and Majal repeatedly, both musically and (esp.) physically. It was great to see her bring all these people together and so effortlessly at that. She radiates much love and respect and goodwill. And the encore was dedicated to George Bush to the glee of the audience. Go see if you get the chance. -mjm ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Madonna's sensual world Date: Fri, 23 Oct 92 15:57:29 EDT Hi, Today has been a major waste of a day, since my terminal decided to die on me this morning (btw, *avoid* VISUAL X-Displays- we have about 15 here, in our group, and mine was the only one not to have died and it did, ie 100% casualties in 2 years!! :( ) Therefore I feel like wasting some more time and bandwidth, and inquiring about a few things: a) How much do Psychowelder T's cost?
