That was a fun interpretation to read thru, it also being one of my altime favorites. (The pipes do it for me.) I had failed to imagine two different people talking, and, possibly having been influenced by There goes a Tenner, I assumed that she (The character Kate is playing) decided she will only let him go if she gets to help out in the dirty deed. She can fly planes, of course (I heard Kate is afraid to even ride in one, so I suppose in her dreams of being powerful, she is a pilot (?) ), so she decides to meet them at dover and fly them out, thus solving their getaway problems with a brilliant suggestion. I took "my miserable life" as being hers, and that helping out would validate her and their relationship. Although your interpretation was a bit more coherent, I dont like the weak female image in it. That doesnt seem like something Kate would do. (So I'll swap the genders, I guess, and see how that fits.) Speaking of swapping genders... I have never heard anyone's serious attepmt to figure out Running up that hill, and I decided that it is about fucking. Rock critic Ken Tucker called the sound "a welcome departure for Vega." He said he'd previously written her off as a hopeless bore, and found her persona as the thinking person's something or other kind of dreary. Apparently, she herself concluded the same after _Days of Open Hand_. Tucker credits producer Mitchell Froom for a lot of the "technological trickery" that makes the songs more interesting. He went on to say that she may be going through a phase before going back to grimness, and that she should keep in mind that "it's when she sells out that much of her music is at its most enjoyable," or words to that effect. Just wanted to report that I was at the big Tower store in town last night and they have 2 copies of each of the 1st 4 in stock right now! They're out of _Warpaint_ and the last time I was there they had two. _Warpaint_ has had a steady turnover there and at their University District store, despite being filed under "H" in the latter store. Also wanted to let Vickie know that 3 tapes are on their way for her to make selections from for the Canadian and Celtic tapes. Sorry to take so long--but life is hectic as we all know. Tape 1 (Canadian) is Martha and the Muffins (M+M) selections from _Metro Music_, _This is the Ice Age_, _Danseparc_ and _Mystery Walk_ [wow, I'd forgotten how much I like them--I'm going to Canada to visit my parents in November and am going to have to see what of theirs is available in cd because we only have one compilation album in that format], and Ferron selections from _Testimony_, _Shadows on a Dime_, and _Phantom Center_ [which has the backing vocals by Tori & others]. She has a new cd out--or at least she was having a cd release party here that I couldn't make. Has anyone heard it? Any opinions? Anyway, I couldn't resist adding one Spirit of the West song ("Political") and one Crash Test Dummies ("Superman") even though their lead singers are boyz. Tape 2 (Celtic and British folk) has John Renbourn Group selections--Jacqui McShee singing from _A Maid in Bedlam_ and _The Enchanted Garden_, and Maggie Boyle singing from _John Renbourn's Ship of Fools_. No Pentangle as you indicated you already had that. The rest of the tape is filled with Linda Thompson singing from Richard & Linda Thompson days [I have her first solo album, but didn't select anything from it] from _Pour Down Like Silver_, _I Wanna See The Bright Lights Tonight_, and _Shoot Out The Lights_. I thought that was plenty to select a song or two from. Tape 3 is selections from Altan's songs sung by Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh from _The Red Crow_ and _Harvest Storm_, and a few June Tabor selections from _Aspects_, _Ashes and Diamonds_, _Abyssinians_, _Aqaba_, _Airs and Graces_ and all of June Tabor & The Oyster Band _Freedom and Rain_. By the way, I just received the new Capercaillie and June Tabor and they're both great (Thanks, Steve!!). Capercaillie is much along the lines of their previous albums but with a couple of songs that sound almost pop, and the June Tabor is very much more in the pop line than previous albums. Only 1 or 2 traditional songs, which are my preference, but still a fine collection. Also heard a new Steeleye Span in concert cd playing at Tower last night. It was *really* good and the quality was much better than most live recordings--as well, it seemed to be all new songs, as far as I could tell. It will probably be my next purchase. My name's Greg, and I must confess right away that I'm a newbie, not only to this mailing list, but to the music of Happy Rhodes in general. In fact, my first exposure to her work occured yesterday - a friend of mine in Montreal (Alan - he told me about this mailing list, so I would imagine that he is reading) sent me several tapes of stuff by the Legendary Pink Dots (who we both love), and put 5 songs by Ms. (Miss? Mrs.?) Rhodes onto the end of one of the tapes. And, I was totally blown away by her material, as was my soon-to-be-wife (I hate the word "fiance") when I played it for her. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about her music that made such a quick and heavy impression upon me. I mean, I enjoy a lot of artists that I would imagine fans of Happy Rhodes would enjoy (Kate Bush, Sarah McLaughlan, Lorenna McKennit, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Danielle Dax, etc...), but none of them made as much of an impression on me from the first listen as Rhodes. Anyway, enough mindless blathering. I *do* have a point to this post - now that I've had a little taste of her material, I WANT MORE! Alan mentioned to me that her discs are very hard to come by, but he thinks that they're available at some places in the States (I think he mentioned Tower Records specifically). I'm going to be visiting NYC and San Francisco in early November, and I'd really appriciate it if anyone who lives in one of those areas could give me an idea of the availability of Happy Rhodes CDs in those cities (i.e. where should I look? etc.). Also, am I correct in assuming that there is most likely a FAQ for this list that includes a discography, ordering information for CDs, etc.? If so, could someone shoot a copy of the FAQ my way? Your recommendation will help me shell out the bucks when I go back. Chris and I have been Judie Tzuke fans since, oh, probably 1983-ish. We were sent a very badly recorded, very badly transferred (PAL-->NTSC) flickering, fuzzy copy of a concert she did. We loved it right away, especially the songs "Chinatown," "Sukarita," & "Sports Car." We've picked up a few albums but have really gotten woefully behind on keeping up with her stuff. So far we only have one of her albums on CD (Stay With Me 'Till Dawn) and the rest on LP. We will, at some point here, try harder to get all of her albums on CD. Chris likes her more than I do, not that I don't like her, I do! But I tend to find her a bit more uneven than Chris does. (Then again, Chris was into Sarah, Jane and Tori before I was.) I do like her a lot though (GREAT voice!!!) and we will definitely pick up the new one. I wish all her albums would be released in America :-(.
