WARNING: this is a Vickie (as Martin put it), a very long post """""""" (have you registered your name as a TradeMark already, Vickie? :) ((hope we Ectophiles can use your TM-name for free :) :) Re: brown package Like Martin I received a brown package from Albany at the end of last week. Well, actually I didn't get it, just a note from the customs office that they had my parcel and were not going to give it to me until they knew what it's value was, mentioning a lot of forms and a bill with two copies. Oh, how I love these people! :-((( Of course they stop office hours at 15:45 and don't work on saturdays, so I had to wait 'til this morning to pay them a visit. My first thought was that H&K forgot to put the small green customs sticker on the parcel. But it was there. It turned out that they wanted to check if declaration and contents/value did match. Luckily I had the Aural Gratification catalogue with me and they accepted that. I already had nightmares about that, fearing a lot of trouble. So I just had to pay some Eurotaxes (never heard of that before) and 14% MwSt. (german) / VAT (british) / or whatever it is called in other places. (BTW, the parcel needed 20 days from Albany to Wuppertal.) That made me wonder what I actually have to pay for one CD, complete with postage, taxes and fees for an american cheque. My calculations came to $23.25 for one CD. I better don't think too much about it. But of course there are the positive aspects. I now have 3 more CDs (one will be part of a wedding present next saturday), all with barcodes as you would have guessed. The customs officer was a bit surprised to find the 3 CDs to be identical. He probably wanted to collect more taxes in case I was going to sell them, so I asured him these were presents. There was the copy of Kevin's "7" (not listened to yet), and some surprises. One was an Aural Gratification cheque as a refund, because I had paid too much. Just, cashing an american cheque of $8 is no good idea. I surely have to pay more on fees. So I have to decide wether to take it as an original autograph card from Kevin (without a picture, but with the AG-logo), or to send it back with my next order. Mmmh, I'll think about it. :) There was also a note from Kevin, explaining the cheque and hoping that I would like his tape and, what he called "some Happy propaganda we send out to Radio & Retail". WOW! That surely compensates for the trouble with customs. But how could they know? ;-) The propaganda consisted of the following items: - copy of WXPN's "Most Frequently Played Artists Analysis" with Happy on the top - copy of article in "The Philadelphia Daily News" - collection of quotes from radio stations & reviews - copy of review in "MAC" (the exclusive adult music review) I will type it all in, and post it here in the next days (so I find the time), but not the _complete_ WXPN-list. You don't wanna know who is on position 54! I tell you! :) So it turned out quite well, after all. I was already afraid (or was I hoping) that I had to call H&K and ask to send me a bill with 2 copies, asap. Re: concert in December Well, I didn't get any news about that, but reading Harry's message convinced me again that December will be the time to go to Boston. So, a decision has been made. I'll go to Boston for about 2 weeks somewhere around Christmas/New Year. On thursday I will try to book a plane. I know, it's gambling, but I can't wait any longer. I would like to wait until concert dates are anounced, but I won't be able to get a plane by then. Several people have warned me to book as soon as possible (might even be too late) to get a plane in December as everybody wants one around Christmas. With my luck the concert will be the day before I arrive, or the day after a return, but I can't help it. Hope you'll all help crossing fingers (Daumen druecken, bitte!). Yesterday Claudia and I had a small 'Boston Tea Party', inviting two friends who had already been to Boston, trying to get an idea which places to see, and which to avoid. Claudia will go to Boston this sunday, and there is a good chance that she will get an e-mail account and subscribe to Ecto. (And I will play 'Noone here' all day long starting next monday.) We are still looking for interesting places to see. So, you New England people, any recommendations for places to visit? And don't tell me about nice beaches. We are talking about December. Depending on how the weather will be like, we probably won't travel that much, and will definitely stay in the New England states this time. Question for Ectophiles in Boston: what is your favourite radio station? Which one to listen to, and how to get it? Mmmh, it's not _such_ a long post after all. Just half a Vickie. :) Back to work ... Klaus (kkluge@Materna.DE). "...... Musically and sonically one of the best projects we've done all year......" I should have defined 'user interface' in my note. As Martin noted, all user interfaces circumscribe the capabilities of the hardware. Increasingly, all of the software I use is in source code form, because I end up modifying it to reflect my own preferences. Just within the last year, I have written two device drivers and modified a third, to make them do what I want. Our department here operates a research weather radar, which I help program at a similar low level. A man I work with actually programs its hardware, wiring circuits and IC's together to produce the outputs that we really want to see. While that last example may be a bit extreme, this is the level of knowledge that is required to be able to fully utilize the capability of any hardware, even electronic instruments. About GIFs: Does anyone else find the colors in the GIFs FTP's from athos to be, well, off, or are my eyes going again? Also in recent days, someone has been posted GIFs from Dead Can Dance album covers to alt.binaries.pictures.misc. So far, he's posted _Within the Realm of a Dying Sun_ and _Spleen and Ideal_. The quality is decent, and if anyone wants a copy I'm be happy to send you a copy. About .sig's: Courtney, you need to create a file called .signature in your home directory, then tell your mail program to include it in your messages. (Or you can do what I do and include the file via your text editor). I don't agree with you. The command-line user interface will continue to live. For less and less users, as new users will start with the easier graphical user interface, but I don't want to put my life into the hands of a machine which is guessing what I want. I still prefer to do my own mistakes. Oh my god, what have I done? (Costumed in what, by contemporary standards, is a rather bilious-looking unitard, with a headdress more evocative, IMHO WIVH, of a cat than an elf. Happy R., Court and some others on this list will undoubtedly find the latter observation rather pleasing and amusing. My own tastes, when it comes to women in catsuits, actually run more to the likes of Mrs. Peel on _The Avengers_ :-). ) 2) Episodes of _Space Patrol_, circa 1953, featuring Lyn Osborne in the role of Cadet Happy. (Who is actually portrayed as a bit of a dimbulb--any sentimen t for an organized complaint about the negative image of people named Happy? :-) ) Not seen at the museum at all, but on the contemporary tube over the week- end: an episode of _Sisters_ (whose inevitable parody in _Mad_ magazine, I am supremely confident, will be called "Shvitzters," in commemoration of the traditional opening steambath scene), in which the husband of one of the protagonists decides to record and market his own album.
