K: Hello, I'm Kirsty MacColl and you're about to listen to a song called Bad, which is, strangely enough, about a very frustrated woman who just wants to get her hands on a carving knife but she hasn't so far so let's hope that sense prevails, ok? K: Hello, this is Kirsty MacColl and just as a change from my usual bitter and twisted songs, I'd like to send you some Christmas greetings with a song called Angel, which is supposed to make you feel good and I hope there's one floating around your house. K: Hi this is Kirsty MacColl and I'd like to explain to you what a cowboy is in England. It's not just a typical cowboy like you see on westerns, a cowboy in England is a term used for people who are faking their job. It's actually used about builder's merchants quite a lot, people who can say "Yes, we'll come in and fix your dry rot, no problem at all" and they don't know anything what they're talking about, so that's really kind of why I've used the word cowboy on this song. It's called Don't Come The Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim. K: Hello, this is Kirsty MacColl and you're about to hear a song called He Never Mentioned Love, which, I think I wrote it about a generic man in my life who just, you know you get relationships with people and they always sort of seem to think things will just tag along and then, they never actually say anything that gives you any reason to believe there's something deeper to hang onto, so, hold onto your seats, it's a bumpy ride! K: Fifteen Minutes is obviously a title that was coined by Andy Worhol, suggesting that in the future, at some point, everybody would get their 15 minutes of fame because of television, but I've seen an awful lot of very sort of phony psuedo-celebrities who've made more than 15 minutes out of their alloted time and have managed to kiss and tell their way through the old payola system and it's pretty disgusting, but you don't have to do it like that. V: Is your first album ever going to be re-released? K: Desperate Character? I don't know V: It's the only one I haven't heard K: Well, it's not great. I mean, some of it's alright but it was alright because I was 19 when I did it but you know, I don't have the pride in it that I have with about, with this (Titanic Days) or Kite you know, but then there is some good stuff on it. IRS are re-releasing this and Kite in January, and they're also gonna have a compilation album that's gonna have all the singles that weren't on any of that stuff, so there's loads of singles, songs like He's On The Beach, there's a lot of good singles that were never on albums, like They Don't Know, New England and Chip Shop and tons of stuff. There'll be a couple of new tracks on it as well. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 22 Nov 93 2:59:29 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Kirsty Bits - Unedited Version Read at your own risk, the risk of your sanity :-) ++ Kirsty unedited version ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Kirsty MacColl Saturday 11-20-93 The Park West, Chicago, IL Opening act: David Grey K: Kirsty MacColl V: Vickie C: Charley Cvercko CW: Chris Williams K: ...to get there next time C: Well, hopefully you'll come back here soon K: Well yeah, well the plan is is if it goes well, you know hopefully we might get a support on a, on a bigger thing and then come back in the spring or something, which'd be good. C: Yeah, ok, good K: Alright, so, have you got, is it...? V: Ok, that's the name of the show, Suspended In Gaffa, and that's the name of the station where it plays, and I'd like to get 2, one for that station specifically and a generic one, because I'm trying to get on some other radio stations so ah just... K: What shall I say though, the generic one, hello this is Kirsty MacColl I can't say you're listening to... V: yeah, you're listening to Suspended In Gaffa. It will be the same show K: Ok C: We're trying to get syndicated K: Do you want to get a reading, is that, is that ok? Um, one two one two one two. Hello this is Kirsty MacColl and you're listening to Suspended In Gaffa on KKFI, Kansas City. CW: Could we do that one again? K: Yeah. One sec everyone, sorry. (laughs) But, I mean, you know, I put them all on there because I'm proud of them all, so you pick what you want, really. Do you want Bad or something like that? C: I love Bad, but it's Vickie's show V: I love them all, it's very hard to pick, but yeah, Bad, tell me about Bad. C: Yeah, so you pick two or three K: Um, ok. Hello, I'm Kirsty MacColl and you're about to listen to a song called Bad, which is, strangely enough is about a very frustrated woman who uh, just wants to get her hands on a carving knife but, she hasn't so far so let's hope that sense prevails, ok? V: The song that you sang background with Mary Coughlin. What's the name of that one? You sang on two of them I think, right? K: I can't remember. I tell you who you should be talking to, my tour guitar player produced that album, Pete Glenister. V: Oh really! C: Oh! Uh, wait, which one did he produce? K: He, uh, I can go and get him if you want to talk to him C: Uncertain Pleasures? V: No, Under the Influence K: I can't remember. No it wasn't Under the Influence, it was later than that. V: Uncertain Pleasures K: Probably Uncertain Pleasures C: Yeah, the one that you were on he produced K: Yeah, I sang on that because he produced it and he asked me to go and sing on it but I'd already met Mary because we'd both sung in The Pogues, yeah she's fun, yeah C: Oh, ok V: Mary? Sang with The Pogues, I didn't know that! K: Yeah, she'd only got, it was like we, it was a live thing once, but um, I've written a, I wrote a song for her actually which might be on an album that she does at some point. V: Oh great! That's one of my fave Bowie songs, too. Two others of my favorites -- but it isn't really accurate to say that they're not Bowie. He cowrote them, much like he does with a large chunk of his 80s material (as with Carlos Alomar or Eno or Iggy Pop or...) I'd strongly recommend Metheny & Mays's "As Falls Wichita So Far Wichita Falls". It's almost Floydian is scope and well played. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 22 Nov 93 10:09:39 CET From: Ilka Heber Subject: Non-Happy, but *I* am happy! Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1993 20:54:03 +1100 From: anthony baxter Well, I'm finally catching up on mail (including ecto digests) - thank goodness for the digest, though - my mailbox runneth over already :-) Anthony Kosky wrote: > I curious as to why people are so anti Tom Cruise. I've only seen him > in two films, namely Rainman and Born on the 4th of July, both of > which he was _Excellent_ in. I've seen him in some good roles, (eg the above two, and I thought he was ok in 'A Few Good Men') and in some absolute absolute _stinkers_ (anyone remember 'Cocktail'*1 :) Hopefully he will be good in this role. Any Aussies out there: if you get a chance to see a group called 'Trout Fishing in Quebec', do so - I saw them play a while back, had a great time, and have now got their first EP (again - the first copy I bought went missing a day or two after I bought it :-( . They're an instrumental group, with guitar, sax, standard drums, a guy on, umm, african drums, I guess they'd be called, and a flute player. Their music is energetic, and quite catchy (a friend of mine who's a little wierd called it 'dancing on tables music' :) Good stuff! I dont think I could pick a top 5 HR songs - but, offhand, Feed The Fire, Wretches Gone Awry, and Hes Alive would be some of my (current) favourites. This opinion will probably last until I next listen to some HR (say, in a couple of hours when I get home) Enough for now, Anthony. *1 Actually, we had fun watching Cocktail. A friend and I were stuck overnight in a hotel room in some tiny outback town , with only one choice of what to watch (Cocktail), so we invented a game called 'Predict-A-Plot' - you have to guess what a character is about to do, or say, next. The sad part was how amazingly easy it was to guess the next line the characters would say. I recommend it as a great way to have fun with bad movies. :-) ======================================================================== From: jk101920@ee.tut.fi (Kannisto Juha) Subject: Dead Can Dance Date: Mon, 22 Nov 93 12:31:03 EET Hei :) I collided with a DCD cd 'A Passage in Time' just two days ago in a local store where they sell used discs and as I had heard their name so many times during recent years, I bought the thing. My luck didn't quite end there, I even like it! The gothic kind of mood has always appealed to me, and they're very strong in that field. Now, I was wondering if anyone could tell me something about the group. I have very little information myself. I also noticed that there's a rather new release from them out there, what is it like in comparison? Anyone? Thank you! Goddess forgive me, I discovered Gopher! Ack! It's all Chris's fault, he showed me all about it. So as if Ecto & gaffa & RDT & e-mail & talk & IRC & News aren't enough, I spent a bunch of time messing around in Gopher. I spent at least a couple of hours just reading movie reviews from 1987! Ack! I have to forget I ever even *heard* of Gopher, that's all there is to it. I did find a cool review of the movie "Man Facing Southeast" which, before I ever talked to Happy the first time, I thought was the inspiration for the song "Off From Out From Under Me." I was certain, but then found out that Happy had never even heard of the movie. Early this morning, before I went to bed, I was listening to WBEZ, the Chicago NPR station (I can't *believe* they dropped Stuart Rosenberg's shows, thank for the info Mitch) and on Weekend Edition there was an interview with Holly Cole, and the Trio (Holly, Aaron Davis on piano and David Piltch on string bass) performed 3 songs in the studios (the studios of KCRW in Santa Monica, CA, which did play Happy for a while) and it was great! The 3 songs performed were all from Holly's most recent album, which I still haven't found. One song, "So and So," was written by Mary Margaret O'Hara specifically for Holly & the guys. Holly said that Mary would leave bits and pieces of the song on her (Holly's) answering machine, and it took months to piece together. Lots of fun! Charley got a fax from Holly's manager which included the most recent tour dates for the Holly Cole Trio. I don't think I posted it already, so here it is. If you can, go! (And ask her if she's listened to the Happy CD I gave her. I gave her "Ecto" and I gave Aaron Davis "Rhodes II" and David Piltch "Equipoise."
