Date: Thu, 18 Nov 93 01:42:53 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Just got back from the Aimee Mann show at the Bayou. Hoo wee! Aimee didn't come on stage until ~11:00 (after the opener, Michael McDermott, whom I would have to call crashingly medicore (he needs to learn when to end a song)). As usual, one of my out-of-order set lists: Fifty Years After the Fair Fourth of July Stupid Thing Say Anything I Should've Known Mr. Harris Now the End (hmmm...what *is* the correct title of the last track on Whatever?--my CD is on loan.) The Other End of the Telescope Lucky Will She Just Fall Down Coming Up Close Voices Carry Baby Blue *and* two new songs! I didn't catch the title of either. One was okay--I'd want to give it a decent listen if it's ever released. The other was wonderful. The band was nice 'n tight. The big surprise (at least to me) was that Dave Gregory of XTC was playing synth and guitar! mild flame: why is it that a singer will start a song and virtually no one will know what it is until either the singer announces the title or actually starts singing and then the crowd bursts into loud raccous applause as if it's their favorite song in the world? If you like the song so much, why don't recognize it when it begins? This happened tonight with "Coming Up Close" and it really annoyed me. Anyone with half a brain should have recognized the acoustic guitar riff Aimee was playing before she said, "This is 'Coming Up Close'". Grrr. Oh well. Great show...1 hour of playing, and then we managed to call her back out 3 seperate times for encores--a total of an extra 1/2 hour of music. Jeff |Jeffrey C. And you've got strange things like advance yellows. Hearing about it made me nostalgic for my college days in the early 1980's. A couple of friends and I were obsessive about this new Boston band playing the club circuit. They were called 'Til Tuesday. We used to see them live 2-3 times a week! They had had one minor radio hit, (_Love in a vacuum_) and an awesome live show. I had the biggest crush on their keyboard player, and Aimee was riveting. Ah, those were the days dancing to that funky garage band in tiny clubs! To Canadian 'netters! How are Crash Vegas doing up there? I've had their 2nd album, Stone, for a few months, but I've recently started to really get into it. Also, I picked up the latest Martha & the Muffins CD (_Modern lullaby_) through the CD Bar and must say it's superb. M+M is one of my all time favorite acts. Will they be releasing anything in the near future? Thanks! But having said that, I too must admit that he is a very good actor and will probably do an admirable job in the role. I also think that, all things considered, it will be a good movie as long as you haven't read the book. Unfortunately, I have. *sigh* >"Hard Copy" also said that Christian Slater will be taking over the River >Phoenix (RIP) role of the interviewer. That just can't happen. As if they haven't ruined the book enough, they now do this. River Phoenix was perfect for the role of the interviewer. He was the only person who actually fit Anne Rice's description of their character. So, whoever replaces River will be a disappointment, as well as a reminder of his untimely death. But Christian Slater??? His whole demeanor is just too cocky and it will really detract from the role. Surely they can do better. >(They did interview Anne Rice for this feature and she mentioned that >she would have liked River Phoenix in the role of Lestat. Other actors >she mentioned were John Malcovitch, Daniel Day-Lewis and Jeremy Irons) Did Anne make any comment about River Phoenix's death? He said Columbia knew he was a big fan and that his store would promote the album (which is true, they have KT stuff up all over there). I'm bummed, because had I known, I would have gone to this (it's a block from where I live). Hello people. I'm back on ecto again, after some absense. I was in England for a few weeks, and got back last week. Since then I've been busy catching up, and decided that things were under control again. And I got back just in time to hear about the American Legoland. This is exciting news indeed. Legoland in Denmark is a truly amazing place. I was there once when I was a very small child, and again when I was a quite large child (as opposed to the very large child that I've now grown into). I used to love playing with lego when I was smaller. Actually I still do when I get an excuse, though nowadays they have too many atena and hinges and other special purpose bits, which I think spoils it. The stuff in legoland however was all made with just the basic lego pieces, which makes it all the more impressive. When in London I made my standard pilgrimage to Oxford Street to visit the Virgin megastore and the HMV store. I discovered the rather depressing news that Ashley Maher's two albums have now been deleted. Hi was deleted some time ago, and Pomegranate just recently (so you can still find copies of that around). So had Ancient Beatbox's album. All record company executives should be shot. I did, however, pick up a copy of The Red Shoes, and also the soundtrack for The Jungle Book which I've been meaning to get for adges and had just been reissued. TRS struck me as better than the last one, but still somewhat dissapointing. Interesting TRS immediately went to #1 in the album charts, which shows that, despite the last album, there are still many people in the UK (including me) who will buy a Kate Bush album immediately it's released and before they've had a chance to hear it. I wonder if this will still be the case next time, after two mediocre albums in a row? The soundtrack to the Jungle Book however is great. I also got to see Janis Ian while I was there, who is well worth seeing if you get a chance. She's a very good performerr indeed. Also the bass player who plays with her, whose name escapes me at the moment, is alot of fun to watch. It's not that he's technically brilliant, though he is pretty good, but his expressions and movements while he plays are very entertaining. That's it for now. -Anthony P.S. brni --- I tried to send you mail a while ago (before I left) and it kept on bouncing.
