I feel so silly about this I figured I share it with everyone. :) The computer science dept. at my school got new furniture. Big whoop. I'm not a computer science major so I don't get the benefit of new furniture in my work space. However, I did have the benefit of playing with the BIG BOXES in the hallway! Yippee! I used to love playing with those big boxes what furniture and washing machines and the such comes in when I was a child. My brothers and sisters and I could amuse ourselves endlessly by getting in the boxes and riding them down the stairs, or making little hidey-places out of them. Then I grew up, (well, that may be a point for debate amongst my friends) and didn't play with boxes any more... ...until today! There were boxes in the hallway of the computer science building! Big boxes! At first I resisted the urge to topple one over and climb inside it. Then I thought, "What the hell?" and then I pushed one of the boxes over and climbed inside. I felt like I was five years old again! It was *great!* Just as I was getting out of the box, I noticed some people walking towards me and the boxes. Oh, dear! Did I ever hope they weren't my supervisors or other such folk! "What should I do?" I thought to myself as I retreated, frightened-hermitcrab-like, back in the box. They weren't unfunloving nasty people like bosses or supervisors or anything like that. They were my friends Andrew and David! They looked in the box at me and asked bemusedly if I was having a good time. I told them I was having a great time. Then they picked up the box with me in it and carried it down the hallway. They set it down, and I got out of the box. Then I set the box on its side and climbed in it again, singing "Silent All These Years." "Guess who I am?" I asked, then sang some more. David guessed correctly and laughed delightedly while Andrew pretended he didn't know me from Eve. What fun! I encourage everyone to climb inside big empty boxes if they have the chance. Ian (I have a friend named ian who pronounces it yon, is this eeee-in?) mentions the Blue Aeroplanes and W.H. Auden, and I know little about Auden but love the 'planes. I was introduced to them when the opened for (and blew away) the Jazz Butcher. I couldn't believe all the guitar players they had, and for the encore all the guitarists for the other band game out too. I was really taken with their layered guitarwork, which doesn't sound anything like the fuzzy layerings of My Bloody Valentine, Ride or that ilk, but is much more intricate and melodic. I picked up Swagger and loved it, and also have Beatsongs (I think), which has the marginally popular "Yr Own WOrld". Is "Tolerance" as good as these are? And is it newer? They also had a guy who just danced, pretty miraculous considering there was already about 7 guys playing instruments on the tiny 9:30 club stage. He's credited on their albums as the dancer too, which always makes for a nice image in my mind of the band refusing to work in the studio because they can't get the mood right without someone dancing. DOn't know if there is any validity to that, but I like the thought, almost as much as the thought of someone providing me some big boxes to play in at work. Aah, yes indeed it does *seem* that way. But, you see, this is far too transparently obvious for the real rec.music.gaffa TruFan(TM). The real truth of the matter is apparently that the order of lyrics on the sheet for the second half of the album is actually a coded message from KaTe to her TruFan(TM)s revealing to them that in fact the correct order of songs is: The Red Shoes Top of the City You're the One Big Stripey Lie Why Should I Love You? Constellation of the Heart (which doesn't match the lyric sheet order on my copy) but the Evil Record Company wouldn't permit KaTe to have the record in that order so that she had to resort to sending coded messages via the lyric sheet to reveal her true artistic intentions to those clever enough to see the light. What was that Woj said about "self serving" about some of the "The Red Shoes" postings on gaffa? Rings a bell with me right enough! Actually, to flog this topic into the ground, if one reads the second row of the lyric sheet in my copy from right to left, only one song is out of position. Personally, I attribute this to the Sainty equal column height theory, heretic that I am. :-) -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. Well, I musn't say more now. Hell, man (or woman - got to be careful with these androgynous names), just post! You're dead right that we *ARE* here to talk about (chiefly) music. And I'm sure your opinion/interpretation will be of interest. There's a whole world of difference between what it sounds like you would be doing than what some of us suspect is behind some (not all) of the track-by-track analyses of TRS on gaffa. After all, very few of us will have heard the Lisa Germano CD. And even among those that have, your opinion of it isn't going to define your status on the list. Do we have status on this list? The thing that bugs me about many of the song-by-song breakdowns of TRS on gaffa is that the posters are writing for an audience almost all of whom can be expected to have the album and to have listened to it with some care, or at least several times. They are not telling anybody anything except their opinions, proffering them up like badges of honour to compare with those of their peers. The exercise then becomes one of "hey look, I subscribe to the majority opinion of this track, that proves I'm one of the in-crowd" or "here, I don't agree with the majority opinion on this track, that proves I'm an independant thinker". It's the kind of thing that goes on all the time, with all sorts of subject, and isn't really too remarkable. But in a forum dedicated to Kate and her work it seems to me to be a pretty shoddy use to make of an album to which Kate has dedicated a lot of time and creative effort. On the other hand I could just be full of it. A sucker who's fallen for the media hype of Kate as the sensitive and striving artist who pours her life into her work. Someone who takes her efforts far too seriously, while she laughs Madonna-like (that's as in the Material Girl, not the Mother of Christ) up her sleeve at my gullability.
