It's not the same as the horseradish we're familiar with in the west - it's way hotter for a start. I don't know if it's even that closely related, biologically speaking. Fresh wasabi root is very expensive. It's usually sold in a powder form or in a little toothpaste-like plastic tubes. As Alex writes, it's quite innocent-looking, but has a real kick - especially up the back of the nose. Traditionally a little blob of wasabi is put on top of the little pat of rice that makes up the base of the sushi. It's then covered up by the slice of fish, shrimp, egg pancake or whatever, presumably as a cruel trick to startle sushi novices who have this strange idea that Japanese food is tasteless and bland. :) Used to hate the stuff as a kid, but I rather like it now. > Yum! That stuff is great. (And I won't even eat sushi. Reminds me too > much of bait. :) -- Kate :) noted, but just a reminder that sushi does not mean raw fish. Many kinds of common sushi do, in fact, use raw fish. (but *fresh* raw fish that doesn't smell fishy at all, unlike most crummy cooked fish) You don't have to put fish into sushi, however - there are lots of vegetarian kinds. If you want a plate of raw fish alone that's sashimi. The common denominator with sushi is rice seasoned with rice vinegar. - Neil K. -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 10 Nov 93 19:59:39 RSA From: prat <035H13P@witsvma.wits.ac.za> Subject: South African Music Hiya'll! Hi..this is to answer the person who asked about where Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard live. Brendan is from AUstralia and currently lives in a church on an old manor in Northern Ireland close to the Southern Irish border. He and Lisa came to LOndon and recorded(I think)the Serpent's Egg wholly in a small flat a while ago..(I really should be looking at the magazine article to get the facts correct). Anyway..Lisa now lives in Australia with her American husband and 1yr old daughter. She and Brendan (formerly lovers) now record music together since it is such a driving force in their lives. She flies up periodically for recording sessions/tours et al. Check out Alternative Press in November/October(ish) for the full details. Speaking for this corner of the US, no i guess i really haven't heard much recent pop from South Africa. Johnny Clegg & Savuka have been known here for several years, having releases on the Capitol label and having appeared on various TV programs. We have seen releases of music from Soweto over the years. But please enlighten us! Apparently, she did some work on the music for _Top Gun_, which was her only claim to fame at the time. I think it's funny I didn't know she was from Victoria. *I'm* from Victoria. Ah well. _Bohemia_ just had its U.S. release, and so is readily available here. I recommend it highly. It's a quiet album that might not grab you on the first couple of listens, but it's steadily become a favourite at our house. "Bohemia" is a catchy tune; the rest slowly grow into your consciousness. It's one of the few quiet albums that we really love--most I find either sappy or uninteresting. _Bohemia_ is neither. However, we never listen to our copy of _Oceanview Motel_ (if we're going to listen to Mae Moore we put on _Bohemia_ every time) So if anyone wants it, we're selling it for $8 ppd. Let me know if you'd like it. It's not that we hate it, just that there are so many other things to listen to, and space is limited. --Neile Graham neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== From: dcwalter@tomservo.b23b.ingr.com (Christian Walters) Subject: DCD recommendations? Date: Wed, 10 Nov 93 13:26:27 CST Hey all! Well, you guys have finally piqued my curiosity. I want to experiment with Dead Can Dance. The best thing about this list is that I discover some amazing groups/people that I normally don't get exposed to here in the Clint-Black-intensive Deep South. (Check me on this, Courtney :) ) So far, I've discovered Heidi Berry, Melissa Ferrick, Lisa Germano, and Sarah McLachlan from youse guys. (No, I don't know how I lived without Sarah :) ) Anyway, what's the best -- in the hive-mind's opinion :) -- of the best DCD cd to start with? I'll take votes, tabulate them, and go give 'em a try. (I'll even post the results if anyone cares :) ) And, like always, if there is anyone else out there besides the ones I've listed above and the obvious ones (Kate, Tori, Happy) that I really should know about, I'm all ... umm.. eyes, I guess, unless you actually want to call me :) (I forgot about Jane Siberry. haven't heard her yet, but Tim is not leaving the continent until I get that tape from him :) ) Thanks! -- Christian Walters * "If we all act responsibly, the world will become dcwalter@ingr.com * fresh and pure and can continue killing us with Intergraph Corporation * earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and Huntsville, AL * volcanic eruptions." - James Lileks ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 10 Nov 93 20:39:04 MET From: Albert Philipsen Subject: Formal DESIRE specification Hi! I just wanted to give you all a little impression of the kind of work I do as a PhD student. I develop formal specifications of complex reasoning systems. The following is a generic task model specified in the DESIRE (DEsign and Specification of Interacting REasoning modules) framework, for the domain of design. Generic means that it does not contain any domain knowledge yet, but this knowledge can be easily filled in. A working implementation generator exists. One of the modules already contains some generic knowledge. This specification still contains a few bugs and incompletenesses, but I know about them. Note that modules now are of the type "conventional", which could be anything, or "reasoning", which means that they use "chaining" to derive more facts. For example, a "conventional" module could be a (simulation of) a neural network. Although this is not currently implemented yet, it is possible to replace single modules by complete subsystems, and plans are being made to start up modules in parallel. The "information state manager" is not completely specified here, but a completely formal specification exists. Note that this manager needs information from outside to determine an ordering on the partial designs. If you have any questions, I would be happy to explain! :-) Albert kbs gtm_design signature decisions sorts Decisions endsig signature design signature decisions; relations decided: Decisions; endsig signature new_design signature decisions; Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1993 13:55:08 -0600 (CST) Just to add my own 2 cents, I hadn't discovered Japanese food until Jessica's-friend-who-bought-her-the nerf-missile-launcher came out to visit and we went to a Japanese restaurant, and I almost continually crave sushi now. For cooked stuff, I can make a MEAN smoked-salmon Maki (roll), with roasted seaweed spread with sushi rice, and a strip of smoked salmon, then roll it up, cut into pieces, and dip it into soy sauce that has wasabi mixed in it. you can do that with egg, vegetables (cucumber is good) as well - it's very very yummy. Fresh fish isn't good to use at home because you have to be very careful not to get parasites. Worms, yuck. Time for class, talk to y'all later.
