Red Shoes Poster Alan the Quick of Montreal ======================================================================== From: Mike Matthews Subject: SplurgeFest Date: Sat, 6 Nov 1993 17:48:42 -0500 (EST) OK, so it's only a three CD splurge. I have to cut back on splurges nowadays. Anyway. I picked up The Red Shoes, Mexican Moon, and the new Pearl Jam today. (Jeffy: 260 and counting, bud. :-) ) I'm not the type of person to give long, detailed descriptions of whether or not I like a CD; to me, either I do or I don't. The Red Shoes: Heck, it sounds great to me... (goes along with my basic philosophy of life: shopping for The Best usually takes so long whatever you end up with isn't The Best any more, so I just settle for what's good enough at a reasonable price, and this applies to everything, not just consumer goods -- in this case, I don't care if it's not perfect, it's good enough for me. This doesn't apply to computers, though; I'm afraid I've got my sights set on a DEC 3000 Alpha-based workstation, preferrably at 200Mhz, but damned if I'll ever be able to afford THAT -- they gotta port NEXTSTEP to it yet anyway) Mexican Moon: COOL! Could very well be my favorite Concrete Blonde, but it'll take some more listening to be sure. Pearl Jam: Listening to it now. So far, so good. Does sound a bit mellower than Ten, but in a Good Way. ------ Mike Matthews, Mike_Matthews@sgate.com (NeXTmail accepted) ------ ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 6 Nov 93 17:48:05 -0500 From: Jeremy Corry Subject: Will Happy have success despite herself? Seeing how people have recently been relating experiences with Suzanne, the Happy Pulse advertisement, distribution in Australia, etc. I just wanted to relate an experience we had WRT Happy and career Management (i.e. Suzanne). About five months ago I introduced myself to a DJ from 99X, an Atlanta station. 99X is progressive/alternative format, it has the highest listener share of any radio station in Georgia. They have Kate Bush (EtM & RbG) on heavy rotation. I told Will, the DJ, about Happy Rhodes, and he was very excited. I promised to give him some Happy CDs. So Stuart, William, and I got together and sent a check to Aural Gratification. We did this because I wanted to give the CD to Will himself. I figured that they probably get CDs in the mail every day, and one more from an independent label would not be noticed. A week later we received a letter from Happy and our check. She said she could not let us pay for her promotion, and she would have Suzanne get in touch with 99X as soon as possible. So no CD. Since then all the ecto-artists have made it into heavy rotation on 99X, including Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Kirsty MacColl, Peter Gabriel, Dead Can Dance, but NO Happy! That is because they have never heard from AG. Recently, Stuart wrote to Happy to order a CD and once again asked about 99X. The CD arrived, but no explanation about 99X was given. I just thought I would add that I do not believe we will see any ad in Pulse in the next year unless we pay for it. (But I am not saying we should go against Happy's wishes in this regard.) --------------- Since I have been posting more recently, I thought I should include some bio info. I do not remember exactly what questions we are supposed to answer. I was born 11 Dec. 1970. I am a Public Health student and lab researcher at Emory Univ. in Atlanta. William is my husband, and Stuart is our roommate. My aunt's cousin's sister's (etc.) relative would definitely be my Aunt Dot, a cattle rancher in Wyoming. The speed of any bird is relative to your object of reference, so the range is from stationary to the speed of light. I've been having a bad week despite the release of _The Red Shoes_. On my way home with _TRS_ and the new Cocteaus on Tuesday, my car was rear-ended. No one was hurt and the woman who did it was very nice and apologetic, but it kinda ruined my excitement over a new Kate album and going to the concert. But at the last minute, I went anyway. I arrived 10 minutes late, and the opening act (David Gray) was just starting. Surprisingly, the place was pretty empty. Someone behind me said, "Why aren't there more people here? She has 4 albums in the US, this is her first real American tour, and she's married to Steve Lillywhite!" I was thinking (sorta) the same thing. But slowly the place did fill up. It wasn't packed and there were less people then when I saw Cyndi Lauper at the same place recently, but it was a pretty good crowd. When Kirsty finally came on stage (an hour and a half later) she seemed really relaxed and genuinely excited about performing. She started with "Titanic Days" but then said since she hadn't ever been to Atlanta, she would do lots of stuff from her earlier albums. And, she did! Although she ended up playing just about everything off of _Titanic Days_, she also did older songs like "Innocence," "Free World," "Walking Down Madison," "You Just Haven't Earned Yet, Baby," etc. Over all, it was a good concert, although songs like "Soho Square" suffered a bit without the orchestra backing them. Go see her if you have a chance. And, buy _Titanic Days_. It's great! Stuart ______________________________________________________________________________ Stuart Myerburg "I need more things. Look at it as an exercise in creativity! It really becomes second > nature after awhile, using inclusive terms. Also Neal wrote something about generic terms...Actually in 1400s and beyond, they was used as the third person singular generic term. It works for me, makes me happy. By the way. I'm not anti-gender or anti-mail. It is important to recognize each gender and that there are not any limits based on gender (except actually giving birth and nursing). I like womyn. I wasn't sure what to expect, since her last appearance was mostly a lecture tour, but the promotional material said she would be performing "songs and stories from her upcoming album produced by Brian Eno." As it turned out, her performance was not quite lecture and not quite music. Mostly she told stories with synthesizer accompaniment, coming awfully close to song some of the time. Many of the stories were thought-provoking and humorous, although sometimes I wondered whether they were all true. She told of how among the Tzotzil she was called "the ugly woman with the jewels"; how she tried to hitchhike to the North Pole; how to make Hotel Hot Dogs. Some of the material was reworked from her previous "Voices From Beyond" tour, a minor disappointment since it took away from the punch to know what she was talking about. She also performed her song "Walk the Dog", which was alternately amusing and annoying because of how she had programmed her vocoder to alter her voice; during the choruses she emitted a nails-on-chalkboard screech. If you're hoping for another musical tour, you may be disappointed, but if you like Laurie Anderson's writing and speaking you'll enjoy this. It is more engaging than "Voices ======================================================================== ======================================================================== From: snpf@ugcs.caltech.edu (The Duchess Of York) Date: Sun, 7 Nov 93 02:26:41 -0800 ----- Transcript of session follows ----- While connected to cesl.Rutgers.EDU [128.6.19.61] (tcprem): >>> RCPT To: <<< 550 ...
