In an Australian/German co-operation, and additional support by the Love-Hounds archive, we are now proud to present you a first sketch of how the tape cover of the Happy Gift Project could look like. Appended you will find a small uuencoded GIF picture. Credits for the artwork go to Martin. It just dawned on me that most of the readers have no idea what to do with this strange block of characters. So maybe we should only announce possible new pictures in the mailing list, and Ectophiles who are interested to see it and can handle a "uuencoded" GIF-picture can request it from the artist. Just some information to tell you what it is all about. Most of us already know what GIF-pictures are. You can transfer them with the FTP-programm because that is capable of sending binary files; that is all possibles values without modification. Unfortunately you can't do that via e-mail. The "uuencode"-program converts a binary file into a block of displayable characters (that's what you have seen), and the "uudecode"-program can convert it back to the original file. So, to be able to view what we have posted, you first need an "uudecode" program on your system and then a program to display GIF pictures. Apologies to everyone who has no possibility to handle it. Following pictures from my side will only be avaible via e-mail on request. _____ Klaus Kluge --- kkluge@Materna.DE --- Countdown: 18 days ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1991 02:29 +8:00 From: SVODOPIER@cc.curtin.edu.au Subject: UUencode etc with Macintoshes... Re: UUencode etc... For anyone with access to a Macintosh, the following programs are all that is needed to decode a UUencoded GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) file: UUtool 2.0.3 - to convert the text UUencoded file into a binary GIF file. (available via FTP from sumex-aim.stanford.edu, in './util/uutool-203.hqx') GIF Converter 2.2.9 - to display the GIF file on any Macintosh. (available via FTP from the same place, in './art/gif/gif-converter-229.hqx') ('twould be nice to have a regular FTP site we could leave the GIFs at... ... hint, hint, nudge nudge, wink wink,... "... say no more, SAY NO MORE! Are you interested in *GIFS*, eh? GIFS eh?, HE ASKED HIM KNOWINGLY. Snap snap, grin grin, wink wink, say no more, SAY NO MORE!" ) err.. sorry... I seemed to have lapsed into Python accidentally. I wonder what brought that on... ah! must have been Doug's post about Neil Innes... last I saw him was in "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl". Nice song, "HSTBAI", but why would you want to dedicate that to Happy, Doug? By the way: Tom and Daniel, I noticed your HappyWare program has been getting a bit of stick lately around the traps because it has few bugs. Hope it all works out OK... seems the big launch with the fake press release might not have been a good idea... :-( Martin ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 Nov 91 09:22:46 EST From: Nimue - Gwragedd Annwn Subject: re: HGP Tape Cover I can draw up several different designs and send them to Vickie to pick and choose from or not choose. Only the luckiest Oberon in Albion! ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 Nov 91 16:38:53 EST From: Nimue - Gwragedd Annwn To quote Vickie directly: >Does Happy have more of an ability to attract people who have >known pain? I think so. I think she can touch deep feelings in >people who have been privliged and pampered, but it's the >"wretches" she speaks most deeply to. I consider myself one of >"the wretches" so I'm not taking shots at anyone. Kate's fans are >half and half, I think. I agree wholeheartedly. While I have been a privliged and pampered little spoiled rotten brat for much of my life (mostly to defend myself from other spoiled rotten bitches and a**holes), I also know what it is to feel real pain. Im going to digress a bit back to what that flaming wench (augh excuse me) Melissa wrote about the "non"existence of psychological pain. I think she's full of crock! I have experienced it on several levels from such sources as my sister and bro-in-law to a kind of societal force that is just out there. There was never any hostility, fortunately, but the pain inflicted through taunts, sibling evaluations and comparisons etc. For instance it was drilled into my head since the third or fourth grade that i was stupid. I didn't get over this until university, and occasionally have to reaffirm the truth to myself. Melissa would say "well you should have had the strength to defend yourself." I would answer that a simple child does not have that kind of strength of will, lacks the reasoning capabilities that an adult has, and when they do get older they don't reason out the situation until it stares them straight in their face and defies what you have been told repeatedly throughout the years. Melissa is very naive, if she were in a plastic bubble she wouldnt be able to recognize the dust particle that could kill her. Yes, these psychological "forces" may seem trivial, but when you experience them they are very real, and can cause real and lasting damage. I've digressed from my original intent - i didn't want to bring up the whole Melissa thing because it bothered me..and i certainly didn't want to spout off on Ecto but sobeit. Back to real pain or maybe pain that is more easily recognizable. As I said above I was mostly raised in a privilged house. HOwever I also experienced a lot of pain the greatest being the death of my father when i was 12. At that age I was undergoing a lo t of stress both because of his death, and from a kind of all-around feeling of being alone. I wouldnt say it has left me as a wretch though sometimes I can feel like one. I definitely agree that Happy's music from the "sad" angle touces (argh) touches me in an almost proufround (wsorry about the typos im on a bloody RISC and I hate this thing) way. I think no matter what kind of pain you have gone through - and everybody has had some pain in their life unless they are incredibly charmed., knows what Happy is saying, and maybe that does make us ectophiles a little more sympathetic...who knows...maybe some psychologist type should do a study of Ectoians. NAnyway ive rambled without saying anything definitive. I just basically agree with what VIckie has said for the most part., and believe it to be true. Weell I am off fro Turkey Day to the wonderfl city of scum i.e. NYC - no offense to New Yorkers I just can't stand the city. kIrI hargieka@craft.camp.clarkson.edu GOBBLE BOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE!!
